There was a large influx of German miners to the Bendigo gold fields and they mainly focussed on deep quartz mining. German enclaves existed at Diamond Hill, New Chum Gully, Victoria Hill, Ironbark and in the Whipstick area. The first Lutheran Church was built in 1865 and there were also two German schools. Small bible with hard cover, possibly bakelite/plastic. The cover has an image of Jesus with and angel above each of his shoulders and plants at the bottom of the image. Houghton in Princess Street Kew was an early Victorian cottage at one stage owned by a relative of the Beath family in nearby Ivy Grange. Their is a chapter on Houghton in Rogers, Dorothy (1961) Lovely Old Homes of Kew. Holy Trinity Anglican Church is one of the parishes of the Diocese of Melbourne in the Anglican Church of Australia. Services of worship began in this building in March, 1863. The Vicarage was built in 1873, and both carry National Heritage classifications. The people in the horse and cart are driving their vehicle over the original Macedon Road bridge which spans the Jacksons Creek in Sunbury. In the 1970s the road was diverted to take out the downhill bend at the approach to the bridge and a newer bridge was built close to the original one, which now takes pedestrian traffic.The original Macedon Street bridge is one of five heritage bridges in Sunbury. Built in 1869 and opened in 1872 by Bishop Perry In 1988, it was dismantled and rebuilt in Wadonga. Efforts were made to save the building. The foundations needed significant work. Many of its adherents were deeply distressed by its loss. The Camp Hill State School is a gothic inspired building, completed in 1877, with an initial enrolment of over 1200 students. A deputation had previously been made in 1875 proposing that a school be built. As well as regular classes, night classes for boys were held at Camp Hill from 1879.Red covered Minutes Book, handwritten in ink, from June 1967 to April 1976. Built in 1906 in main street of Neerim South by Samuel Fry who established his business at that time. Exhibits include early boots and shoes, Heavy leather working machines and saddlery. Many of the tools belonged to Harry Coombs, who was Moe's first bootmaker from 1910 - 1966A small rectangular timber shop. William Watts arrived in Bacchus Marsh in 1862 and for many years conducted a boot and shoe makers business in Main Street. This building, known as ‘Kentbury’ was built about 1858, and was formerly the premises of Bastings, cordwainer. The premises were enlarged in 1876 and occupied by Weaver. George Evans is the man in the photograph. Bendigo Volunteer Rifles were formed in 1857/58 and the Bendigo Cavalry in 1861. Each man supplied his own outfit with the cavalry carrying sabres rather than guns. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-40: George Walton settled at Rhyll after the Land Settlement Act was granted 8 acres in the township of Rhyll. He was the father of a large family, many descendants still live on Phillip Island. He had the honour of being the first brickmaker on the Island. He died in 1912 in his 81st year. Also Harriet Walton, Richard Walton & George James. 466-41: The Gall Family. Robert and Sarah Gall came to Phillip Island about 1869 and selected Block 10, some 20 acres. They built their home and sunk a well which still exists in Settlement Road, Cowes. Copies (2) of original photo: Print attached to back of photo : Mr. Fred Kelly ( in uniform ) with his complete working model of a mine which took part in the Easter Procession for many years. Mr. Kelly built the mine himself, and included a small steam engine to drive the stampers and make the cage go up and down. The mine was formerly on show upstairs in the Town Hall, and is now at the Deborah mine museum.
