This dress was worn in a pre-racing season fashion parade held in October 1974 by Pearl's Boutique, a well-known fashion boutique that operated in Brighton from 1965 until 2005. Paula Folks, the store's manager at the time, recalled that this parade had been loosely red, white and blue themed in honour of Princess Anne's wedding to Mark Phillips, which took place on 14 November of that year. The parade was likely held at Tudor Court in Caulfield, a popular reception venue. Pearl's Boutique was established by Elsebe Wilhelmine Wills and Pearl Murray in 1965. The two friends had grown up together in Horsham, and decided to go into business together after reading in Fashionweek that women in their thirties, forties, fifties and older had trouble finding young-looking styles. Setting out to fill this gap in the market, they established a store at 240 St Kilda Street, near the Brighton Yacht Club, with Elsebe handled the buying while Pearl fronted the shop. They moved to 40 Church Street, Brighton in 1967. Paula Folks joined the business as a manager in 1968, became a partner in 1971 and took over from the original owners in 1988. When she closed the boutique in 2005, she donated a number of garments to Brighton Historical Society. Reflecting fondly on her 38 years at Pearls, she told The Age, "I have enjoyed all my days here because people are special to me. I love fashion. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is a souvenir from the First Alpine Art Show held at Koki Lodge in June 1967. The Art Show exhibited a collection of Australian painters including John Glover (1826), Louis Buvelot (1886) Hans Heyson (1902), Grace Cossington-Smith (1918), and William Dobell, Norman Lindsay, Donald Friend, Sali Herman, Sidney Nolan, John Olson, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, and Pro Hart. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. Miners received $27.20 or $35.25 if a Leader in a wet shaft. Braceman $25.80, Platman $25.80 or $27.05 if he worked in a wet shaft. A Mining Blacksmith $28.55, a Fireman, from $26.10 to $26.60, Winding Engine Driver $30.05 a week. Batteryman $25.10, battery Feeder $24.80. Engine Driver's wages varied from $27.10 to $28.90 if in charge of a dynamo and plant. The Basic Wage was then $23.20 a week. In 1895, employees worked a 6 day, 48 hour week and most men received less than $5 per week. The price of gold in 1949 was $30.98 compared with an average of $8.00 an ounce in 1895. This bottle has been issued to a customer of Shilton's Pharmacy 11 9 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. The bottle contained tablets to be taken for a cold. Harry Shilton bought the business in 1937 and added a chiropody clinic and a hairdressing salon and he was known as the " Man in White.' . In 1953 Harry Shilton took on a partner Alan Anderson . Harry Shilton retired in 1960 and Alan Anderson continued as the proprietor, transferring the partnership to John Lindsay in 1967. The name Shilton was still used until 1972. This bottle is of minor importance as an example of tablets in a bottle as used by customers in the 1960s.A brown glass bottle with a plastic lid. It has a label with red and black printing. The Hallford truck was made by J & E Hall, of Dartford, England, whose business commenced in 1785. In 1926 the Fisher family of Mongan's Bridge took delivery of the 1923 Hallford truck which was used on the farm to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory in Tangambalanga. In 1967, the truck was sold to Mr Greg Bedstead and other members of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for the KVHS who reimbursed them at a later date. The truck was housed at the Butter Factory for many years and was paraded on special occasions.This truck was used to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory from the Fisher family's dairy farm at Mongan's Bridge. At other times a tyre was removed and a belt attached to run a chaff cutter. This truck has historical significance as it is presentative of vehicles which were used by farmers to transport cream to the butter factories by a local family. Furthermore, it has social significance as KVHS members combined their finances to purchase this truck so it would be part of our collection. Alfred Donald Senior studied Electrical Engineering at the Ballarat Schoo of Mines (SMB) between 1927-33. He worked as an Instructor in Electric Welding at SMB between 1932 and 1967 receiving a certificate of Electrical Engineering, and greatly enjoyed his association with SMB as a student and instructor. Senior was an A. Grade Electrical Mechanic (A.M.I.E.I.s Vic and NSW) and was employed at the SEC Elec. Supply Co of Vic 1927-1970. 'Hunter' is an Australian spy drama which ran from 4 July 1967 – 5 March 1969 on Nine Network. This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel D J Hunter OAM RFD when serving with the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 22 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. With its unusual plan form, this is one of Robin Boyd’s most important residential commissions of the period. The house was identified in heritage study as being of architectural significance at the state level. Alterations to the house were made in 1967, 1989, and 1999. This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a number of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. Robert HANNAFORD (9 November 1944- ) Born Gilbert Valley, Riverton, South Australia From In 1967 to 1968 Robert Hannaford studied in Ballarat. Primarily known as a portrait artist he is also known for his landscapes, still lifes, nudes, and sculptures. Robert Hannaford has commented: "Portraiture is an exploration of character that goes beyond photography. It is an ongoing thing over a long period of time. You get elements of various emotions that can be sensed in the painting." Framed academic portrait of Dr Tom Kennedy who was the Director of the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (GIAE) from 1984 to 1989, and the inaugural Chief Executive Officer and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University College Gippsland (MUCG) from 1990 to 1992. (In 2014 the Churchill Campus became part of Federation University Australia). Prior to moving to Gippsland, Professor Kennedy was the Deputy Director of the Chisholm Institute of Technology. He was an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry, Professor Kennedy held a degree in Science, a PhD in Chemistry (Glasgow) and a Diploma of Education. This photograph is a visual record of Mrs. Hallenstein who was President of Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) from 1967-1974. In February 1970 the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) hosted the First International Congress on Domiciliary Nursing and, as President of RDNS, Mrs. Hallenstein presided over the opening ceremony. Mrs. Hallenstein played an integral roll in the planning and correspondence to the College of Arms, London, which concluded with the Royal District Nursing Service being granted a Coat of Arms in 1970. In 1949 Mrs. D. (Elsa) Hallenstein was elected as a member of the Committee of Management of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) and After-Care Hospital, and In 1951 was elected as a member of the Committee of Management, and appointed to the Board of Directors of the Nursing Service Division, of MDNS and After-Care. In 1957 when the Society and After-Care Hospital separated, Mrs. Hallenstein was on the first Committee of Management of the now Melbourne District Nursing Service whose Headquarters was located at 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne. In 1962 she was elected as a Vice-President and in 1964 as senior Vice-president of MDNS until 1967 when she became President of the Committee of Management of the now renamed Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), a role she held until 1974. In February 1970 RDNS hosted the First International Congress on Domiciliary Nursing and, as President, Mrs. Hallenstein presided over the opening ceremony. Mrs. Hallenstein played an integral roll in Melbourne District Nursing Service being granted Royal patronage in 1966, now becoming Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), and with the planning and correspondence to the College of Arms, London, which concluded with the Royal District Nursing Service being granted a Coat of Arms in 1970. The gallery was founded in 1967 as a one-room gallery within Horsham’s library building. In 1983, after the offer of a major bequest from Mr Mack Jost AM, it moved to the former council offices which is the building it resides in today. The 1939 Art Deco building provides elegant and human-scale spaces for the display of the collection and temporary exhibitions. The first prototype of the Owen Gun was first developed by Evelyn Owen in 1931 and finalised the design in 1938. The Owen was the only entirely Australian - designed and constructed service sub-machine gun of World War11 and was used by Australian Army from 1942 until 1971. It was manufactured at Lysaght's works who built 45,000 units. The methods and medication applied to wounds changed as research developed better products. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), the Education department developed programs, such as the Leg Ulcer Management Program, to provide their trained nurses (Sisters) with methods of best quality care. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and Hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctors. RDNS introduced Wound Care Specialists who did assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field. On the right of the black and white photograph is Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Sister Cheryl Prentice, who has dark shoulder length hair and is wearing a white gown over her RDNS uniform, the sleeves of which are seen. On her left Mrs. Morgan is sitting propped against a pillow at the top of her bed and has her knees slightly bent with legs extended. Sr. Prentice, who is looking at her right hand, is holding a small open bottle in her left hand and has her right arm extended across Mrs. Morgan's legs, with the fingers of her hand touching the skin on the far side of an open ulcer wound on the right leg of Mrs. Morgan. Mrs. Morgan, who has short light coloured hair, is wearing a cardigan over her floral frock, is looking at the procedure. A punt crossed the Snowy River at Orbost from 1884. A bridge was constructed in 1893, but was soon damaged by a huge flood. Flooding was a regular occurrence, the worst inundations being in 1870, 1893, 1925, 1934, 1952 and 1971. Over the years major flood protection works have been implemented. Orbost has been subject to major floods throughout its history, such as those which left the town isolated in 1934, 1952, 1971 and 1978. It is recorded that the Snowy River broke its banks and flooded the flats 104 times between 1884 and 1978.
