These bottles come from the aerated waters business of Warrnambool Cordials Pty Ltd. This business was established in Fairy Street, Warrnambool in the early 1920s by Joseph Lescai. He had a fruit shop in Fairy Street and began making cordials which eventually became his core business. The business was taken over by a group of local business men and then in the 1930s was purchased by a garage proprietor, Thomas Hill. In 1942 Charles and Frederick Flett took over the business which was known as Warrnambool Cordials. In the 1960s the business was sold to Thomas McKenzie and the products were marketed as McKenzie’s Cordials. The business continued until the 1980s. These bottles are of interest as examples of the products of Warrnambool Cordials Pty Ltd in the mid 20th century. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years. These are two glass bottles (one with a bluish tinge). The bottles have a round base with a rounded body tapering to a narrower neck and a moulded glass opening at the top. There are no stoppers. The information on the aerated waters supplier is impressed into the glass on the sides of the bottles. These trousers are from the Light brigade, and therefore would have an interesting history and research value. If this item was attached to other items connected to the wars,WW1, WW2, it could good interpretive history. Unfortunately we do not know who they belonged to, but since they were donated to the UC op shop it may be a local person in the Kiewa Valley. Jan 2013 - We have just found out these trousers are infact from the German Army from WW1 and would have been brought back home by one of local soldiers who were in the light horse, which a few men from Tawonga served in.If this item was donated by a local person, this would make it very signfigant due to attached social history about that person. Therefore significance would be, historic, re light brigade history, and the German Army, since we now know these are German Army pants. Research value as above. This is the stamp used by Ernest Phillips to mark his tools and his products. It was used both on wood and metal surfaces. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was born in Warrnambool and was apprenticed as a cabinet maker at the Warrnambool Box Works. By the 1890s he had established a furniture shop at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets and by the beginning of the 20th century he had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside of Melbourne. His products were sold all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and today this site is occupied by the flats complex for senior citizens called ‘Heatherlie’. This stamp is of interest because it belonged to Ernest Phillips, a prominent Warrnambool businessman (late 1800s to the early 1900s.) It is also of interest as an example of an early name stamp. This is a small piece of metal with a rounded flange top and a wider flattened end. The end is serrated and cut to hold the letters, ‘E. Phillips’. Anglesea is a town on the Great Ocean Road in the Surf Coast Shire local government area. It is 110km from Melbourne. Before 1967 policing in Anglesea was on a seasonal basis with a 'shop front' police station and caravan in the main street. Anglesea Police Station (Barwon District) was opened on 7 February 1967 on the corner of Wray Street and The Great Ocean Road. It was a residential police station, brick veneer with an iron roof with 3 rooms, a bathroom, laundry and a garage. When the station opened it was staffed by one Senior Constable and two First Constables. Walter John Howell was born in the Buckland Valley 30.11.1871 he died in Bright 13.05.1930. Walter "Watty" ran his Blacksmith shop opposite the Alpine Hotel (corner of Anderson and Wood sts) from 1893 until his death in 1930. He was also proprietor of the Ovens Valley Coach Factory in Ireland Street, near the site of the present library, for a numberof years before World War 1. From 1893 he resided in Cobden Street (no.37) The medals were for attaching to a watch chain and were presented by his grandsons, Keith Edwards and Ron Howell (both born in Bright) in November 1994 The Medals were presented by the Bright Fire Brigade which has been a local volunteer organisation scince the C1870s The Howell family were one of the first families to settle in the Buckland Valley and many descendants live in the local area Reference to the Ovens Valley Coach WorksQuarto size ridgid card with information regarding the medal hand written in black ink. Harcourt branch of the Australian Natives Association was formed in 1908, meeting in a chaff shed behind the local grocer shop. In 1911 the branch contracted with Mr Sutherland of Barkers Creek to build a hall of boxed concrete construction. Sutherland was a pioneer in the use of concrete for structural purposes.He subsequently had a career as City Engineer at Camberwell. The ANA branch conducted many social occasions in the hall and gave community leadership for upwards of fifty years in addition to its friendly society/health insurance activities.. This clock was produced by the American Sessions Clock Company. The company was formed in 1903, after William E. Sessions and his nephew Albert L. Sessions bought out the failing clock company of E.N.Welch Manufacturing. The clock belonged to local Wodonga bootmaker Franz Gördes (b.1843) who immigrated to Australia from Germany in 1871. After docking in Melbourne Franz headed for the goldfields in Beechworth, but didn't strike gold. He returned to his trade and opened a boot shop in Wodonga, which burnt to the ground the day before the opening. The Harvest Home Hotel was licensed as a beer shop in 1866. Patrick Vallence was the licensee. On his death in 1874 his widow Mrs M. A. Vallence obtained the license. The date that this image was created has not been identified. Around 1883 George Marshall was leasing the hotel. The people in this image are could be members of the Marshall family and some of the staff who worked in the hotel at this time. Following a decrease in the population of Bacchus Marsh by 1911 the hotel had lost its licence. The Vallence family still owned the building after the loss of the hotel license in 1911and it was used for some years after this as a private residence by some members of the Vallence family. Roadside buildings, formerly Doney's General Store. Doney's operated from the 1880s through to the late 1960s. It was situated at the head of the present day Research shops on Main Road near the corner of Raglan Road. By the 1960s it was under new ownership. The Store had a residence at the back. Signs promote The Herald and Sun newspapers, four 'n twenty pies, coca cola and more. A public phone box is in the front of the store. Beside the store is possibly an old farm building with more signs advertising honey, Streets, Tarax and a local bottle dump. Pat King was a surgeon dentist in Warrnambool from the late 1920s through to the 1940s. In 1929 the King family owned the stone building in Liebig Street next to the old Tattersalls Hotel (now McDonalds fast food outlet). The King family remodelled the building and turned it into shops with living quarters upstairs. Pat King had his dental business in the centre of the building and his brother had a produce store at the northern end of the building. It was known at that time as Kings building. By the early fifties, at the time of his death, Pat King had been living at 32 Howard Street. Kings building was auctioned in 1953.This little box is of some interest as it came from the dental business of Pat King, a prominent dentist in Warrnambool in the 1930s and 40s. This is a small buff-coloured cardboard box with a lid. The four corners of the box and the lid have metal rivet reinforcements and a semi-circular cardboard inset has been stapled into the box. Photograph shows X2 class tram 677 parallel to an unknown W2 class tram in Glen Huntly Rd, Elsternwick near Elsternwick Stn. 677 has its single trolley pole set ready to be driven over a crossover and probably onto Point Ormond terminus. Perhaps it is waiting for the City bound W2 to pass. 677's east facing destination blind still reads Elsternwick Rly Stn as it was M&MTB practice on short shuttle services such as this to only show the correct destination on the front of the tram. Photograph of Fitzroy, Northcote & Preston Tramways Trust (FNPTT) R class tramcar No.1 northbound on single track in Plenty Road, Preston approaching a double track loop south of Bell Street. While this tramcar and track were constructed for the FNPTT, the line was only operated by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board from 1920. "Freight forwarding" is the arranging of the shipping of goods from their point of origin to their final destination. Freight Forwarders worked as an intermediary between companies that needed to ship products and the shipping and transportation firms that could ensure delivery. A key element of "freight forwarding" was the advice and professional handling of documentation and customs requirements provided. Early "freight forwarders" tended to be innkeepers who forwarded on the luggage of their hotel guests. One of the first "freight forwarding" companies was established by Thomas Meadows in 1836 which made it one of the earliest freight companies in Europe. More reliable rail and steamships were beginning to be used to transport goods and this created a demand for the new "freight forwarding" industry. The combination of railroads and steamships became very important in the late 19th and early 20th century. International shipments became common and freight forwarding that could handle their complexity became an integral part of the manufacturing and shipping landscape. Thomas Meadows & Company Ltd moved to offices in Milk Street, London in 1854 (where they remained until 1969 when they moved out of the city to Leytonstone) and continued in the freight business until 1987 when the company was acquired by Rockwell International Freight. The growth of Thomas Meadows & Company Ltd coincided with the growth and development of the colony of Victoria with an increasing need for the transporting of large numbers of people as well as important goods required by the growing colony - furniture, spirits, food, clothing, agricultural implements, household items etc. In the late 1840's only two or three overseas ships a month visited Melbourne but by late 1852 (after gold was discovered) more than a dozen ships arrived each week. By 1939, Thomas Meadows & Co. Ltd. had offices in Canada, U.S.A., New Zealand, France, Belgium and in Flinders Street Melbourne. This poster was sold by "Smarts Authorised Newsagency" in 1988 in Warrnambool - a business that had been owned by Neil and Shirley Smart at 168 Timor Street, Warrnambool since 1976. Previously it had been "Reed's Newsagency and Book Shop" (a local business established by William Reed circa 1912 and known as "William Reed Bookseller and Stationer"). The original owners, Reed's Newsagency and Bookshop were operating the shop in 1939 which suggests the poster may have been on display (for the information of their customers) in their shop at that time. This poster is significant through its association with Thomas Meadows and Co. Ltd. who is considered to be the founder of the "freight forwarding" industry in the early 19th century. It is an example of advertising used by shipping agents in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. Its information includes the addresses of the firm's different offices in the U.K. and abroad, ships, shipping lines and ports used and the timetable the vessels were likely to follow. It is also significant through its association with a well known and long standing local Warrnambool business.A 1939 Timetable of "Australian Sailings" produced by the shipping agents Thomas Meadows and Co Ltd. It lists all their ships (plus dates and ports) sailing from the UK to Australia as well as the addresses of their offices in other cities in the U.K., Canada, U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand, France and Belgium. A Victorian F-class steam locomotive and passenger train at Eltham Railway Station, c.1904 Intending passengers were able to walk down from the Main Road straight onto the railway platform as the station initially only had tracks on the far side. The rail yard and storage shed for heavy goods is across the tracks. The platform shed-like building is best seen in the 1910 and 1912 photographs. The Victorian Railways F class locomotives were built in 1874 (the pattern engine), 1876–77 and 1879–80 by Beyer, Peacock & Company and the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat as 2-4-0 tender locomotives. They were normally used on passenger trains. In 1911 the Victorian Railways decided to convert seven of them into "motor" locomotives. These became 2-4-2 tanks. They kept their numbers 172–184 (evens only). The unrebuilt tender engines were taken off register between 1916 and 1922. The "motors" were taken off register between 1920 and 1929. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. Newspaper Clipping from "The Post", Wednesday, August 4, 1993. "Bash attack on businessman"'.A local restaurateur and council candidate received abrasions and bruises after a vicious attack by two men at his pizza restaurant on Sunday morning. Joe Cassari, who is standing in Ringwood's North Ward was assaulted and the front window of his shop smashed after he asked two men to leave. Mr Cossari's nephew called the police immediately the fight started, but they had to call again 20 minutes later when they still hadn't arrived. The police said they had another job to go to.

This was taken in 1865 of Spring Creek, Beechworth. Gold was discovered in this area in 1852 and within eleven months of this discovery, over 8000 hopeful prospectors had descended on the region, transforming the seemingly undisturbed land into what a visiting journalist in 1880s referred to as; "A Titan's Field". Huge mounds of earth were churned by hundreds of miners in search for gold, almost every available resource the land had to offer was used for something; even the bark off the gums were stripped to line huts and shafts. By 1857 more than 20,000 people lived in Beechworth, and with this influx the town prospered with the building of numerous churches, banks, schools, shops and hotels along with a prison and hospital.Black and white rectangular photograph. This so-called Hickford medal was a medal struck in 1897 by the Town of Warrnambool (bearing Walter Hickford’s name as the Mayor at the time) to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria. Walter John Hickford was Mayor of Warrnambool 1895-6-7 and President of the Committee that organized the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. A skilled decorative artist, Hickford carried out art work in many private houses, business and churches in Warrnambool. His shop in Liebig Street supplied paint materials for households, businesses and artists. Hickford Parade is named after him. The 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign was celebrated widely throughout Australia and the British Empire. This medal is one of several owned by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. It is of some importance as it shows the extent to which civic authorities and individuals in places like Warrnambool were concerned with all things British and the influence of the British monarchy in Australian affairs in the late 19th century. It also shows the importance attached at the time to the position of Mayor, with his name being inscribed on the medal.This is a medal, possibly bronze, with the logo of the Town of Warrnambool on one side and two images of Queen Victoria on the other. This box contained packets of Reckitts Blue and was probably displayed in a shop with the lid up showing the brand name and the items. Blue or laundry blue was a household product used up to about 1960 to improve the appearance of textiles during the washing process. It added a trace of blue dye which made white fabrics appear whiter and it was widely used. Reckitts was a firm established by Isaac Reckitt in Hull, England, in 1840. By 1888 it was a public company and in 1938 it merged with J.& J. Colman, a food manufacturer. Later it sold the Colman side of the business and today it trades as the Reckitt Benckiser Group. The firm established an Australian branch in the late 19th century.This box has been used to store the Charles Brittlebank birds’ eggs collection but it is of interest in its own right as a box that held Reckitts Blue packets. Most Australian households in the 19th and 20th centuries (up to about 1960) would have used blue bags or packets in the laundering process so they are part of our social history. Today a bleach is used as a replacement for a blue bag.This is a wooden box with a hinged lid (the hinges are hooks and eyes). The box once contained one gross of Reckitt’s Blue. The printing on the box is coloured but some of it is now faded. Inside the lid, pasted on, is the name of the manufacturer. The side of the box also has the name of the manufacturer pasted on but the printing has been discoloured at the edge by the application of maroon-coloured paint. Card cases were common items used mainly by men in the 19th century. A silver card case indicated that the owner was a man of means. ‘W.Swinton’ is presumed to be William Swinton who came to Australia in 1854 and established a drapery and grocery store in Timor Street in 1865. William Swinton died in 1901 and his son, also William was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1917 to 1919. A Swinton business still exists in Timor Street today. ‘W.Wilkie’ was obviously a friend or a business acquaintance of William Swinton and may have been related to James Wilkie who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and opened a drapery shop in 1855 in Timor Street with James Butters as a partner. This is a most significant item as one that belonged to William Swinton, a prominent Warrnambool business man and a pioneer settler in the town. It also has social significance as an example of an item used by businessmen and others in the 19th centuryThis is a silver card case with a hinged lid. The silver is patterned in geometric shapes and the edges are highly ornamented with scrolls. Inside the case are five pieces of white paper which are obviously not original. The case has five hallmarks indicating it is a quality object. The silver is somewhat tarnished. Scroll frame on front of case: ‘From W.Wilkie to W. This bottle was used in the pharmacy of R. F. Kennedy of Warrnambool. It has on it the well-known Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse on a rocky cliff on a coastline with ships in the distance. Richard Frank Kennedy (1826-1903) was born in England and came to Warrnambool in the early 1880s. He established a large pharmacy in Timor Street with a retail, wholesale and manufacturing business. In 1891 he erected a new building which was described as one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist shops in Victoria. Kennedy was active in Warrnambool community affairs and was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club, being its first Vice-President and an early President. The business continued after Kennedy’s death, trading as ‘R.F.Kennedy and Co.’ Richard Frank Kennedy was one of the most significant businessmen in Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The products of his chemist shop and factory were distributed all over Victoria and beyond. This item is a very good example of a Kennedy bottle. This is a small clear glass bottle used in the pharmacy of R.F. Kennedy. It has a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a circular top moulded over the neck.
