Percy Fairlam was an early 20th Century photographer living and working in Cheltenham. Fairlam captured important social and landscape scenes in and around the Cheltenham area including cliff faces, sea baths, and rock pools. With the outbreak of World War I (WWI), Fairlam began training in Seymour and documented preparations for war, comradeship and the voyage to France and war. Shrapnel to the shoulder, on 4 January 1917, saw Fairlam evacuated to England and resulted in him being separated from his personal possessions. As such, all these images have been lost. After the war, Fairlam moved into the family business and no longer pursued professional photography. However, he continued to take an interest in the art form capturing intimate family moments as well as continuing to capture social and landscape scenes.Black and white photograph of a Richard William Percy Fairlam (Percy Fairlam) standing in the doorway of a small wooden building. This image is of Arthur Dawson, a well-known local footballer who played for the Fitzroy, St Kilda, Brighton and Moorabbin Football Clubs. As the villages of the Moorabbin area continued to grow and establish, sporting teams for both men and women were created and competitions played. Arthur Dawson went on to play for St. Kilda Football Club in the VFL in 1918, 1919 and 1921. His jumper numbers were 30 and 20. Produced in 1853, this map shows the land holdings of European families. While the majority of holdings are small there are also large land holdings as can be seen with Henry Dendy's Special Survey. Of particular note is the "Reserve for Aborigines" which was established in approximately 1841 and consisted of over 830 acres. This area is the current location of Mordialloc township and Attenborough Park, in Mordialloc, is the last remnant of the reserve. The Scantlebury family moved to Cheltenham from Linton. The father, George, was a medical practitioner. His daughter, Vera, became an early woman graduate of medicine at the University of Melbourne. The first picnic was held in association with the Market Gardeners and Fruit Growers’ Association on April 3, 1884 at Lilydale. Groups of market gardeners travelled by train with their families from Cheltenham, and stations further north, to Lilydale at a cost of three shillings and six pence for adults and two shillings for children under 15 years. On arrival a band played music to accompany dancing ‘on the green’, and foot races were held as well as other sporting events. Horse and wagon were used to haul produce from the market gardens of the area now known as Kingston into Melbourne city for sale, well into the 20th Century. The dinner took place on Tuesday 25th November 1958 at The Naval and Military Club; there is no indication of what the occasion might have been. The two caricatures are clearly of the same person and are signed by Pat Hanna, in the same style as the drawings in 01293 and 01290, it is possible that 'Donno' might have been Donovan Joynt though his name isn't in the autographs. (Donovan Joynt was a prominent original Legatee and VC winner in France in 1918, and looks similar to the drawing). It may not have been an official Legacy occasion but simply a gathering of Legatees at the Naval and Military Club. The artist Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive.As well as demonstrating the conviviality of Legatees, it attests to the food usually offered at dinners in the 1950s. The 'Papa au Rum' listed for dessert might have been a misprint for 'Baba au Rhum' which was popular at the time. He notes four main fields of activity - sifting and arranging Savige's own records, research and interviews in Canberra and Sydney, background reading (newspapers etc.), and the writing of the first two chapters. An early attempt to catalogue Legacy memorabilia which refers to 33 boxes of items split into subject matter such as 'History of Legacy', 'Finance Committee', 'Junior Legacy', 'Shrine', Group and Branch histories, and photograph albums. No indication of when it was compiled or by whom though it is presumed to be the Archive committee that was established by Frank Doolan who collected a lot of the items in the archive cabinets. Uses a rudimentary system of cataloguing e.g. 'H1. Inauguration of Remembrance Club. Box 1', where 'H' refers to History. 'S' refers to Shrine. Includes three loose typed and handwritten sheets listing films and tapes. A high number of History documents (H1 - H63) are filed in Box 25 - 01475 onwards. The newspaper features refer to the portrait by E Buckmaster submitted to the Archibald Prize competition (00634.4 and 00634.5, page 7 missing) as well as to the book (00634.6). The small signal box is in the view as well as the interlocked gates. A NMETL saloon tram is crossing the railway lines. Photo late 1919 or 1920.
