The summer Olympic Games were held in Sydney in 2000 and the Olympic Torch was brought from Olympia in Greece to Australia via Oceania. There were 13,400 torchbearers with 11,000 of these being in Australia. The Olympic Torch was carried on Day 43 (July 20th 2000) through the streets of Warrnambool. John Sherlock Willaton was born 1.8.1897 in Sebastopol near Ballarat. In 1916 aged 18 years 8 months he enlisted in the 1st AIF and embarked overseas with the blessing of his employer even though he had not completed his apprenticeship. He was wounded in action with a bullet wound to the right foot. His family moved from Ballarat to Sunshine in 1917 and when he was discharged in 1918 he joined the Sunshine Harvester Works as a Fitter and Turner. He was promoted to Sub Foreman of the Bolt Shop toolroom where one of his main responsibilities was training apprentices and he remained in that position until his retirement on the 4.8.1961.Contains original signatures of 112 workmates at Massey-Ferguson (Australia) Ltd of John S. Willaton. It is an original document and the only copy in existence.Farewell signatures of 112 workmates on the retirement on 4-8-1961 of JOHN S. This is a set of 43 photographs of a 4th Field Survey Squadron adventurous training held at Wilpena pound, in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia in 1989. It is evident the training focussed on teamwork, leadership, abseiling, rock climbing, field craft and living off the land survival skills. Elements from units of the Army Reserve also participated in the training. In this photo set, one of 4th Field Survey’s sections participated in abseiling and trekked to the highest mountain in the Flinders Ranges – St. Mary’s Peak. Bn.The kitbag consists of a long, brown, canvas cylinder closed at the bottom. The top has an internal canvas flap and eight brass grommets to allow a drawstring type rope (fitted on this item) to securely close the bag. A metal D-shaped hinged clasp (see photo; 13 cm x 8 cm) to enable fitting of a padlock. A canvas loop (see photo) is sewn to bottom edge of bag to enable rope to be passed through for bag to be slung on shoulder.
