Believed to be looking east along Eltham Road towards Eltham from around the top of the hill near the present day Andrew Yandell Habitat Reserve. Eltham Road, Greensborough followed what is now St Helena Road from Main Road Greensborough running into Karingal Drive and Sherbourne Road finishing at Bridge Street, Eltham. The site was previously used as an unsealed car park for the Eltham Railway Station. In 1996 Wayne Phillips MLA announced that Caldeed P/L was the preferred developer of the land at Eltham Station for a proposed commercial development and commuter car parking (The Advertiser, April 16, 1996). Blockbuster Eltham was established on this site around 1996-1997. Following the company's 2010 bankruptcy and subsequent nationwide store liquidations, most Victorian Blockbuster locations were shuttered between March and May 2011 after ownership changes, with the Eltham storefront closing Friday, 13th April 2012. The last Australian store closed in 2019 in Morley, Western Australia. An unofficial Facebook page remains in existence in 2026 at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Blockbuster%20Eltham/123397434395463/ The shop was then converted to a Liquorland store. The site was sold 25 August 2015 with a ten year lease in place to Liquorland. Born in Castlemaine 1886. Maldwyn L. Williams (Leslie) was a prominent doctor in Bendigo, both at Bendigo Base Hospital and in private practice. He played several games in the Victorian Football League (VFL) whilst at university. Enlisted in Citizens Military Force in 1909 as Captain in Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. Promoted to Major in 1913. Sept 1915 - appointed Major in regular army, 8th Field Ambulance Unit. Nov 1915 - sailed for Egypt; June 1916 - sailed for Marseilles. Jan 1917 - promoted to Lt. Colonel and command of 1st Field Ambulance Unit. Wounded near Bapaume 2nd March 1917; died from wounds 3rd March 1917. Buried at Dernancourt Cemetery, France. The engraver of the plaque was C.G. Roeszler & Son of Melbourne. This business was founded in 1869 and is still family-owned and trading today. This company is responsible for many examples of engraving around Melbourne, including work on the 1928 Ringwood Memorial Clock and in St Paul's Cathedral in Flinders St, Melbourne. Rectangular metal plaque, possibly brass. 4cm border featuring botanical motif. A flower with eight round petals at each corner - each flower has a 0.7cm hole at its centre. Lamson was established in Australia in 1898 with the idea for a store security money handling system being patented in the latter part of the 19th century.The practise of taking money from the counter and customer to the cashier was time consuming and cumbersome.Some bright ideas were employed including tying the money and dockets in a hankerchief and throwing it to the cashier. The first attempt to improve this was the ball system where a ball containing the cash was rolled to the cashier on an elevated track. The rapid wire system superseded this in the early 1900's and for the next 50 years it became a popular part of money handling in stores around Australia. This particular Lamson's cash carrier was installed in Youngers department store which was situated in Liebig Street. The success of Youngers store was partly responsible for the shift to Liebig St as the main commercial district. The Warrnambool Standard reported in 1901 that Younger and Co would operate on a wholly cash basis replacing incidental trades of goods such as potatoes and other farm produce.This item has strong social and historical significance. Apart from having strong links to one of Warrnambool's largest and longest running businesses, the object itself is of considerable interest with thousands of the original ball systems and Rapid Wire cash carriers being in use around the world. These trousers have been made by Fletcher Jones and Staff. This business was established by David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) in 1924 when he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. In 1928 he moved his business to the main retailing area near the Liebig Street/Koroit Street intersection. In 1931 a shop built to Fletcher Jones’ requirements was erected and by 1938 he had a staff of 40. By 1945 FJ trousers were sold in 123 stores in Victoria and in 1948 the Fletcher Jones factory was established in Flaxman Street Warrnambool, officially named Pleasant Hill. In 1951 the company became Fletcher Jones and Staff and by the mid 1970s the staff had 75% ownership. By this time FJ and Staff had become one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Australia with 55 shops and almost 3000 employees. The range of clothing was enlarged to include both men’s and women’s wear. In the 1980s, after the death of Fletcher Jones, the abolition of import tariffs and the availability of cheap imported clothing caused the Fletcher Jones Company to decline and to be sold to a Geelong company. By 2011 all Fletcher Jones shops had closed. These trousers are of great interest as they are a product of a Warrnambool business that was nationally and internationally known in the 20th century for its quality men’s wear, especially the Coverdine brand trousers. The Fletcher Jones business remains one of the most important businesses, (if not the most important), that ever existed in Warrnambool. It employed a great number of local people in the second half of the 20th century, and is remembered with great fondness by many people in the city and surrounds today. The Fletcher Jones Gardens at the Factory site are still maintained today and are a tourist attraction in the city. These are a pair of brown Fletcher Jones trousers made of Coverdine material (87.5% wool with nylon). There is some lining around the waist area and the legs are turned up at the end with some leather binding inside the bottom legs. The waist band is stiffened and is fastened with a metal clip and two buttons. The waist band has two adjustable areas using tabs and two buttons each side. These tools belonged to Henry Phillips (1821-1896). He was a cabinet maker who came to Australia in 1849 and settled in Warrnambool, establishing in association with Christopher Beattie the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips in the 1860s. This was a prominent business in Warrnambool for over 100 years with James Beattie taking over from his father. These tools are significant because they belonged to Henry Phillips, one of the founders of the important Warrnambool undertaking business of Beattie and Phillips. They are also of interest because they are examples of the type of tools used 150 years ago. These are four chisels, three with wooden handles and the four have steel blades. Spoke shaves were used by woodmakers to shape curved surfaces (originally wheel spokes). These two spoke shaves belonged to Ernest Phillips of Warrnambool who would have used them to shape the surfaces of chair and table legs etc. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was the son of Henry Phillips (a hay and corn dealer in Warrnambool) and his wife, Emma. He learned cabinet making at the Box Works in Warrnambool and in the late 19th century established a furniture-making and selling business at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. By the early 20th century he had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside Melbourne and sold his products all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and after his death this Phillips house was acquired by the Methodist Church and the Heatherlie Homes for retired people were built on this site.These tools are of considerable significance as they were used by Ernest Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These are two spoke shaves - small planes, slightly curved, with wooden handles and a metal blade in the middle. The blade is attached to the handles via metal ends which go through holes in the wood. The blade area is strengthened with metal plates attached by metal screws. These handsaws belonged to a Warrnambool furniture maker and dealer, Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924). He learned cabinet making at the Warrnambool Box Works and established a furniture warehouse at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets in the late 1890s. By the early 20th century he had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside Melbourne and his furniture was sold all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and today the site of this family home houses the retirement village complex known as ‘Heatherlie’. The makers of these saws was Robert Sorby of the Kangaroo Works in Sheffield, England. This business was established in 1928 and is one of the world’s premier manufacturers of specialist woodworking tools. These two tools are of some significance as they belonged to Ernest Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. These are also a good example of the type of tools used in the woodworking trade 100 years ago. These are two handsaws which belonged to Ernest Phillips. They have wooden handles attached to the blade by metal screws. One screw is missing on the larger saw. The blades are made of steel with serrated edges and they are inserted into a fold of steel along the top edge. The handles are well-worn and the blades are a little rusty. ‘Robt. This spoon rest is a souvenir item for tourists to purchase. It is a souvenir of the presence of Southern Right whales at Logans Beach, a few kilometres from Warrnambool’s Central Business District. Each year Southern Right whales have been migrating from sub-Antarctic waters to the east coast of Australia during the winter months. Some whales have been coming each year from approximately May to October (since the 1980s) to have their calves at Logans Beach near Warrnambool. This area is now known as Warrnambool’s Southern Right Nursery. The whales calve about every three years and stay in the local waters along with other whales for about three months and over the past thirty years or so over 100 calves have been born at Logans Beach. The whales are now a winter tourist attraction (if an unpredictable one) as they can be viewed from a raised purpose-built platform area and they are often very close to the shore.This spoon rest is of interest as it is a souvenir of the Southern Right Whale Nursery at Logans Beach, Warrnambool and it has a practical use in the kitchen. After a gap of a couple of years Richard Osburne resumed publication in October 1853 and continued until 1867. William Fairfax and Henry Laurie then leased the paper (1867 to 1872) before Richard Osburne again became the proprietor from October 1872 to April 1878 and from December 1879 to December 1880 when publication ceased. Fairfax and Laurie were the proprietors of the paper when this Almanac was published. William Fairfax was a member of the Fairfax family which was, and still is, associated with the publication of many Australian newspapers. Henry Laurie later became well-known as a Melbourne University Philosophy Professor.This single sheet of newspaper is an interesting and valuable record of Warrnambool and its people in 1870. There are names of many local people recorded and it also gives an insight into the variety of businesses and orhganisations which were established by 1870. This is a telephone directory of the telephone numbers and addresses of residents and businesses in Melbourne in 1933. There had been several early attempts in the second half of the 19th century to link places and homes in Victoria by locally-made telephone systems with a commercial telephone system in the same year successfully linking a business in Melbourne to a branch office in the same city. The first telephone exchange in Australia was established in Melbourne in 1880. This 1933 telephone directory shows the growing number of private residents and businesses to have the telephone installed but the installations were still confined mostly to the more affluent private residents and to businesses. This book is of considerable interest as a reference guide as it provides the names and addresses of those who had a telephone installed in Melbourne in 1933. This Almanac was published by the Warrnambool Advertiser in 1873. The Warrnambool Advertiser was first published in 1868 by the Warrnambool Newspaper Company with James Hider as chairman. The first editor and publisher was Frank Davis who was succeeded in these positions in January 1870 by Daniel Harrison and Daniel George. The plant and goodwill was sold in May1874 to Fairfax and Laurie, the proprietors of the Warrnambool Standard. The owner of this booklet was Christopher Beattie who came to Warrnambool in 1853 and founded, with Henry Phillips, the undertaking firm of Beattie & Phillips in 1865. Beattie was heavily involved in community affairs in Warrnambool - the Fire Brigade, the Building Society, the Mechanics' Institute, the Manchester Unity Lodge and the Wesleyan Church. Several pages of the booklet have personal notes written by Beattie. The booklet remained in the possession of J J Leahy, the successor to Beattie & Phillips in the Fairy Street undertaking business.This booklet is of major importance as it is an original Warrnambool Advertiser Almanac of 1873. This Almanac was published two years before the Warrnambool Standard Almanacs were issued (1875-1930) and thus it contains information not available elsewhere. This medallion was awarded by the Commissioners of the Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition to ten boys from the Kew Asylum who sent handmade items (basketware, matwork etc ) for display at the Education Court of the Exhibition. The Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, held in Warrnambool from December 1896 to March 1897, partly to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, was a signal event in Warrnambool's history, with one report suggesting that over 70,000 people attended the various activities held over these months. These included concerts, operas, displays, business stands, sporting events and competitions. The earliest surviving voice recordings made in Australia were produced in Warrnambool at this Exhibition and there were various other 'firsts'. The medallion awarded to the boys at the Asylum for the high quality of their work, was made by the Melboune firm of Stokes and Sons who had a stall and machinery at the Exhibition and made small souvenir Exhibition coins on the spot for visitors to buy. As well as the gold medallion the boys were also given by the Commissioners some small souvenirs to the total value of 12 shillings. This medallion is of great historical value as it is a precious and rare memento of the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, an important event in Warrnambool's history..1 A round gilt-bronze medallion with a bust image of Queen Victoria and lettering on one side and a laurel wreath and lettering on the other side .2 A square black box with a metal hinge and clasp. This suit was made to order in 1975 for Ted Henry at a Fletcher Jones factory, probably the one in Warrnambool. The other items were obtained at the same time. David Fletcher Jones began his business by opening shops in Liebig Street Warrnambool in the 1920s. His Man's Shop sold suits and overcoats and manufactured men's clothing on site. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and a factory was opened in Warrnambool in 1948. The Fletcher Jones and Staff Company expanded and became well known throughout Australia for the quality of its men's and women's clothing. The Company ceased business in 2011. The surname "Henry" is well known in Warrnambool and district. This stencil has been made to imprint the label, 'Britain Relief Appeal' on to parcels and packages sent to Britain in the late 1940s and the early 1950s from the City of Warrnambool. Britain endured severe rationing of food, clothing, petrol and furniture from 1940 because of the outbreak of World War Two and this rationing continued in some form after the war up to 1954. Australian towns and cities established organizations such as Food For Britain and sent regular parcels of food and clothing to Britain during those times. The British Relief Appeal in Warrnambool (via the Warrnambool Food For Britain committee) was sponsored by the Warrnambool City Council, Toc H, Australian Red Cross, and various local charities and businesses. The Warrnambool & District Historical Society has in its collection over 100 letters sent by grateful British recipients of these parcels to the senders, the employees of the local Warrnambool business, Swintons Stores.This stencil is of interest as a memento of the effects of rationing in Britain in post-World War Two times and the close ties that existed between Australian towns and cities and their British counterparts.This is a rectangular-shaped metal stencil, originally painted black, with cut-out letters in the centre. This item was used to measure accurately the length of cloth on a bolt of material without unwinding it. It also measured lace, all types of textiles and spools of ribbon. It is surmised it would have been used in general stores or department stores in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This item was discovered in the late 1980s behind an old safe at Swintons Stores in Timor Street in Warrnambool. The item appears to have been used extensively and would have been very useful during a stocktake. It may have been used in the Swinton Stores which were first established in Timor Street in 1865 with one section of the stores selling furnishings, furniture, clothing and clothing materials. The item was manufactured by A.E. Putnam of Iowa, U.S.A. There was a patent registered in 1896 and a later 'improved' model with a patent date of 1907. This item is of considerable interest because of its rarity and survival, its connection to Warrnambool General Stores in the past and its value as a research tool in local social and economic history. The possible connection to Swintons Stores is important as this business operated from 1865 to 2024 and was one of the longest-surviving family businesses in Australia. This is a rectangular-shaped wooden pole with one slightly flattened side and numbers marked on each side in patterns resembling brick walls. At the top of the pole are two wooden pieces attached to the pole by metal clips held by screws. The two wooden pieces are attached at a slight angle to the pole. The lower wooden piece is movable along the pole and has incised numbers. The wooden pieces are rectangular in shape with a large curved piece cut out to form the shape of a pennant. The maker's name is incised into the metal on the top attached wooden piece. In 1934, Victoria and Melbourne celebrated their centenaries. Realising how impossible it would be for the majority of Warrnambool residents to participate in the Victorian celebrations, the organising committee of the Warrnambool Centenary celebrations devised a week long comprehensive programme of activities including exhibitions, a pageant re-enactment at the breakwater and a mass children's display at the showgrounds. Sir Harold Gengoult Smith officially opened the Warrnambool Centenary Exhibition of Arts, Crafts, Antiques and Historical Relics. This booklet was designed and written in 1934 for the Warrnambool Centenary festivities by Frank H. Ford, Lava Street, Warrnambool. The souvenir booklet contains a brief history of Warrnambool, a map and description of Warrnambool and its facilities in 1934.The last three pages include a business directory which would be useful for research.A twenty page booklet printed on shiny paper. These booklets were issued in 1944 to 1948 by the Warrnambool Progress and Tourist Association(established in 1927). Warrnambool was the winner of the Sun News Pictorial Quest in 1928, the ‘Ideal City’ and used this title to promote the city. There had been several Tourist Associations in Warrnambool prior to 1927 and all of them promoted Warrnambool as a health resort and an ideal holiday destination with the Sea Baths in Gilles Street and the beach close by. These guides were produced during and immediately post World War Two with rationing of petrol and other goods and most people in Victoria would not have been contemplating long and expensive holidays so Warrnambool with its rail service and beach facilities would have been seen as a possible holiday destination. The booklets contain information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district, black and white photographs of buildings, events and scenic spots and advertisements for local businesses. At first sight, the building appears a mix of a classic Eltham mud-brick house and an avant-garde building style. The crown of solar panels stretching along the width of the curved roof, indicates that this is no ordinary house. In fact it signals a new building trend of minimal impact on the environment. Yet it utilises the environment with high technical expertise to achieve comfort and cut running and maintenance costs. In recognition of this, its designer/builder, Conscious Homes, won the 2006 National HIA Greensmart Resource Efficiency Award. For Conscious Homes director, Llewellyn Pritchard, this house reflects a philosophy, strengthened by his connection with Aboriginal culture, through his foster siblings. Pritchard believes the sustainable way indigenous Australians lived and their spiritual connection with land, demonstrates how humanity is part of the ecology. His interest in environmental design stemmed from growing up in bushy Eltham Shire, with its mud-brick tradition. This was followed by studying Architecture at RMIT in the early 1980s, and learning about passive solar design. Pritchard says this house demonstrates that environmental sustainability is not about sacrifice, but about exceptional levels of occupant comfort, savings in running costs and modern fittings and appliances.1 The solar panels on the north roofs are intentionally obvious to make a statement about what the building is doing. But inside the systems are hidden and interactive with conventional services, such as the underground water tank. The house is water and energy self-sufficient and at 12 squares is much smaller than conventional houses, to minimise resources. Yet it accommodates his family of four with three bedrooms, a living/dining and kitchen area and a bathroom/laundry. Importantly the building is designed to last hundreds of years, by being able to be modified as the need arises, such as for commercial use. In this way the structure minimises its environmental impact. The solid double mud-brick walls (which are insulated) include steel beams and supporting frame, allowing the future removal or alteration of any section. The materials are local, recycled and of low toxicity where possible.2 Inside and out, the mud-brick is rendered and sealed with a combination of cement and sand and a mud-based coating in a soft golden hue increases its life. Inside, the golden-brown timber is plantation Mountain Ash and the concrete floors throughout – of local stone aggregate with a clear seal – have a natural looking random stone appearance. The house sustains a stable temperature of around 20 degrees, assisted by the concrete slab floor. The many large double-glazed windows and highlights (windows set high on walls) provide cross-flow ventilation. The north-facing living area maximises heating from the lower winter sun and is cooler in summer, because the sun is higher. Heating comes from a solar hydronic slab system. All appliances and fittings are high efficiency energy or water rated. Appliances in the timber kitchen include a gas stove and a dishwasher, using the building’s own power and water. French doors open from the living area to a deck, concealing the treatment system for all waste water. This is pumped through sub-soil drippers to the indigenous garden beds and no-dig vegetable patch. Below the carport is the 80,000-litre rainwater tank and at the back, the boiler room houses the solar boiler, water tank access, domestic water supply pump, filter gear and hydronic slab heating controls. The solar system is backed up with gas, which is needed to heat water only in winter. Gas used is less than one quarter of that for an average home with ducted heating. Excess power is fed back to the grid and the building uses about one quarter of the mains electricity of an average home.
