Tawonga CWA branch commenced on 7th Feb. 1946. Prior to this the ladies would have been involved in supporting the war effort with knitted and spun items as described in this book. The branch often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. Getting together for the war effort would have succeeded in this aim perhaps encouraging the women to continue meeting under the banner of C.W.A.The Tawonga ladies would have been involved in assisting the war effort from home. Most of the ladies lived on remote farms so they may have got together, learnt together and felt happier while contributing to the war effort and supporting the men fighting overseas. Wool was available and easily made into useful items that could be shipped overseas. These medals were produced for Anzac Day 1918 by the Education Department of Victoria and made by the Melbourne firm, Stokes and Son. They were issued to Victorian school children and also sold to aid the war effort. Significant, one of the earliest details of the Red Cross Society in WW1 Very significant, very rare.Paper poster, headed Red Cross Society. Asking for interested citizen in the Camberwell/Canterbury area to form committees to raise 600 pounds to buy a fitted out Motor Ambulance to send over to France as part of the war effort. In October 1914 not one motor Ambulance was on the French front as the War office had banned any Red Cross involvement with wounded soldiers. Once General Kitchener was made aware of this situation he immediately overruled the ban and 100 motor ambulances and 1000 Nurses were sent to France. This fund raising by Camberwell Residents for a Motor Ambulance to be sent to France would have been among the first in WW1.See photo for complete details

In 1941,as part of the war effort, the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of Prahran provided over 2000 money belts for soldiers and sailors leaving Prahran for active service overseas. These were included in parcels of comforts made up and presented by the Prahran Patriotic Society. Elizabeth Nelson on eMelbourne has written that: "War Savings Streets were street-based savings groups that participated in the national war savings campaign during World War II. In May 1940 the Australian Government launched its Savings Certificates scheme which encouraged civilians to invest in the national war effort. Organisers of the savings campaign targeted Melbourne's suburbs individually with the aim of enlisting street savings groups. Each street group had a volunteer secretary who regularly sold war savings certificates to, and collected money from, other residents.
