The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. It mentions the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. They mention is it a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. Each ceremony was attended by the Governor of Victoria, in 1995 it was Sir Richard McGarvie. The event included a fly past of 4 aircraft and speeches by the president, the Governor and two school children (see 01785). A bugler in red uniform performed (see 01787). There was a boys choir and girls choir either side of the Shrine steps. Other school children sat on the steps with wreaths to be laid in the inner sanctuary (see 01788). Two Junior Legatees laid wreaths at the Cenotaph on behalf of Junior Legatees (see 01789). The school ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV and Radio for many years. Commemoration Tree and plaque in the grounds of North Ringwood Primary School in Oban Road. These coloured photographs are undated, however the playground equipment suggests circa 1990s. The plaque mounted at the base of the tree in 1965 reflects the wording of a sign attached to the tree when it was planted ten years earlier, in 1955. (See also Reg. no. 139 - "Commemoration Tree"). Writing on plaque reads, "Commemoration Tree. This tree was planted on Remembrance Day 11th November 1955 by Maj. Gen. L.E. A history of the beginnings of the Legacy Anzac Student Commemoration service. It mentioned that Legacy was delegated the job of providing speakers in schools to discuss Anzac Day with the students. The volume of work was immense and after consultation with the Director of Education, Mr Frank Tate, it was decided to hold a student only Anzac Observance ceremony in 1930. In 1931 Legacy took over the event and organised a radio broadcast to schools through 3LO. It was estimated the broadcast reached between 200,000 and 300,000 students. The bulk of the document is a recount by Legatee E W Mylrea in 1937, about the development of the service. He was a Past President of the RSS&AILA (Vic) and one of Victoria's most distinguished head-masters. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph while the main service is at the Shrine steps. They may have been junior legatees. It was with another photo of junior legatees laying a wreath which had two labels with conflicting names. It appears to be the same boy, Peter Manning. The label that could refer to this photo says: 'At Melbourne Legacy's Annual School Children's Anzac Commemoration this year Junior legatees, Gayle Goulding and Peter Manning representing all Junior Legatees, laid a wreath at the foot of the World War Two Memorial.' That would place it as being either 1981 or 1983. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. Two pages from an edition of the Bulletin on 5 March 2015. It shows the 1932 Legacy Anzac Commemoration for Students at the temporary Cenotaph in Spring Street. The article by David Cull has some of the history of the service. He uses a quote by Legatee Rupert Heley from 1940. “This service has for us a much greater meaning than one of remembrance only. It calls to us to face the unknown future as the men of ANZAC did, with courage and determination to resolve that we will do our utmost to keep this great country of ours free and to uphold the principals of justice, mercy and truth . . . “ “The future of this country lies in your hands. International House held their tenth anniversary Commemoration Dinner on 30th June, 1967, attended by approximately 300 guests, including Lady and Lord Casey (then the Governor-General). The Caseys presented the House with "a pair of valuable silver candlesticks" to celebrate, having been associated with the House since its establishment. The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. China container - demijohn Royal Australian Navy Commemoration

The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of social and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.
