The dates range from 1991 to 2002. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club formed in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This trophy is retained as it comes from the Apex Clubs of the South West District and Warrnambool Apex Club, now closed, was a member of this group. This is a wooden trophy consisting of a wooden base with a wooden plinth with two wooden columns on either side. The columns have a gold-coloured strip running along the entire length of the columns. On top of the plinth is a gold-coloured holder for a pennant or flag. The base and the plinth have gold-coloured metal name plates. All of these contain inscribed names except one. The Ozone Hotel building was opened in 1890 as the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace (a temperance hotel) and was at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. It was built by a company of local businessmen and leased out. In 1891 the Coffee Palace was granted a wine licence. In 1895 Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the building and it was renamed the Ozone Hotel. The building was closed in 1915 and re-opened in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. The Nominal AIF Roll indicates he was a clerk, single, son of James Critchlow and Cof E and a Gunner 33322. in 1924 he married Brice Violet Payne in Victoria. This iron would have been used mostly by women either travelling, in hotel rooms etc, or on an occasion when only one or two small items were needed to be ironed. It has been superseded by electric irons. This is an attractive item and is retained as a fine example of a travel iron used about 90 years ago. This has a rectangular-shaped metal base with pointed ends (in the shape of a conventional ironing plate). The top of the plate is indented. A piece of metal (chrome-plated), with a hinged lid, partially slides out from the top of the plate and this is used to hold the meta tablets (methylated spirits) or coal. The top of this plate is used to extinguish any coals or flames. This piece of metal is partially enclosed in an open metal container. All but two of these letters came from the office of the Chief Secretary of the Government of Victoria and concern the grants allocated to the Warrnambool Art Gallery from 1886 to 1911. At that time the Art Gallery was under the control of the Warrnambool Mechanics Institute Committee and managed by the Secretary/Treasurer of that group. The Government funding for the Art Gallery at the time represented a sum of money equal to the value of the works of art donated locally to the Art Gallery in any given year and frequently the estimated value of these art works were queried by the Warrnambool Secretary of the time. Two notable Secretaries of the Mechanics Institutes during this time were Walter Cockman (1880-1892) and George Lance (1892-1901). The correspondence under review here was retained by George Lance and his family and came into the possession of Lance’s grandson, Bruce Morris who was the editor of the Warrnambool Standard newspaper from 1946 to 1968 and was a well-known local historian. These letters are of considerable importance as they are original and document the struggle of the Warrnambool Art Gallery over the years 1886 to 1911 to secure funding from the Victorian Government.These are 19 pieces of correspondence relating to Warrnmbool Art Gallery grants and purchases from 1886 to 1911. The letters are written on different size pieces of paper (mostly foolscap size), with thirteen of them being handwritten and six being typed. All letters have original signatures. George Knapman was born c.1851 in Ashburton, Devon, England, the son of George Knapman and Elizabeth Grant nee Wyatt. George, his mother and three sisters arrived in the Port of Melbourne, 28 Jul 1857 aboard the ship, Mindoro from Plymouth, his father having preceded them some eighteen months earlier. George married Mary Jane Williams in 1877 and they settled in Eltham where they had five children; Percival George (1878), Florence Maud (1880), Laura Blanche (1882), Alfred Edgar (1886) and Gladys Victoria (1897). In 1879 George was elected a vestryman for St Margaret’s Church, a position he would be re-elected to for many years. Both he and Mary were active members of the church and social activities. In 1884 George was also engaged in collecting funds for the renovation of the St Helena church George was also a member of the Eltham Cricket Club. In May 1884 following completion of the cricket season, several players banded together to form a group holding fortnightly meetings for the purpose of giving readings, recitations, etc to relieve the dullness of the long winter evenings. Charles Wingrove was elected President, Rev. J.B. Gason Treasurer and George along with Messrs Evans, Bourke, D. McColl, C. Jarrold, George Hill and William Brown, members of the Committee. In 1885, George advertised two horses had strayed from his premises (reward £2) and in 1891 he had a cultivator for sale (price £7/10/-). In 1902 he was treasurer of the Eltham Rifle Club. His children attended Eltham Primary School. In 1904 he was a member of the school's Board of Advice and addressed children at an Arbor Day planting activity. In 1907 he was elected president of the Eltham Progressive League, calling for public toilets to be erected at a local picnic spot. George along with William John Taylor and Isaac Hill was also appointed a Trustee of the Eltham Rechabite Hall in Henry Street on behalf of the Hope of Eltham Tent No. 195 Victoria District Independent Order of Rechabites from December 1901 until its sale to the community in December 1921 for use as a public hall. George ‘Snowy’ Knapman was a blacksmith by trade. He owned and operated a shoeing forge and wheelwright workshop, known as Snowy Knapman’s Forge, in Main Road Eltham, next door to the Eltham Court House. The location was well chosen. Mail coaches from Melbourne passed through Eltham enroute to Christmas Hills and Yarra Glen, with another heading to Kingstown (now Panton Hill). It was common practice for horses to be changed at Eltham. Two photos taken June 4, 1907, captioned ‘Election Day Eltham’, show a large crowd of men assembled in Main Road outside Knapman's premises. They are waiting to vote at the Court House. There are no women in the crowd; they were not empowered to vote. George's brothers William and John were also blacksmiths at Heidelberg, continuing the business established by their father George, who had died in 1900. After William died in 1909, George moved to Heidelberg to take over from him. George died at his residence, ‘Devon’, Yarra Street, Heidelberg on March 16, 1923, and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with his wife Mary who died July 16, 1935, at Kew. Their former house at Eltham was located near where the WW1 Monument was erected in 1919, after they had moved to Heidelberg, at the corner of Bridge Street and Main Road and occupied by Mr. R. Trevena at the time of Mary’s death. Mary was sister to E.J. Williams, W. Williams and Mrs Fawkner, all residents of Eltham. In 1993 Eltham Shire Council issued a permit to Michael Muzur, Terry Lant and Andrew McMillan to redevelop the former Montmorency Theatre/Bingo Hall at 41-43 Were Street as an alcohol-free youth entertainment centre. Ron McCormack, retired former JP on behalf of 41 Joint Appellants consisting of local residents and traders successfully lobbied the community and won an Appeal to have the permit cancelled as unsuitable development. The Administrative Appeal Tribunal found that the proposed development came withing the Eltham Planning Scheme definition of an 'amusement parlour' and that the playing of pool an amusement machines would be the focus of the centre and unlikely to attract older age groups. The tribunal was not satisfied the applicants had sufficient knowledge or where with all required for the successful running of this type of operation. With respect to the objectors, the Tribunal did not accept that a responsibly managed and attractive amusement parlour could not coexist near the adjoining residential area and without detriment to the commercial centre. At a Council meeting on June 7, 1994 councillors requested a report outlining criteria to be used to assess planning applications for youth entertainment venues given the Tribunal's view that a poorly managed facility in a small neighbourhood shopping centre, particularly in such close proximity to a residential area would not only have the potential to increase perceived youth problems, but could jeopardise the prospects of future proposals. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. An F-class 2-4-0 steam locomotive and tender hauls a train of two open wagons, a guards van and a single Tait passenger car over the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge, heading for Melbourne. This type of steam locomotive was replaced by the F-Class 2-4-2. The house on the right, originally known as 'Derril' was purchased in the early 1920s by Walter Ernest and Alice Miriam Gahan. On the western side of Main Road near the present-day site of Shillinglaw Cottage, they remained till about 1960 when Walter died. The house was demolished in 1968 during the widening of Main Road. In the distance beyond the trestle bridge on what would become Central Park appears to be an orchard of fruit trees. A young man with waist coat, jacket and hat stands beside an older man wearing suspenders without jacket and bare headed, sitting on the post fence. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. The recommendation was to amalgamate the Shires of Eltham and Diamond Valley, something that Eltham Council did not support as being appropriate for the shire or compatible with the 'Spirit of Eltham'. Shire of Eltham Archives: Series 69, Item 4 This video was produced for the Shire of Eltham by IMP Productions and provides a description of the shire, 277 square km on a north/northeast axis, some 25 km northeast of the centre of Melbourne with a population of around 40,000. Scenes include Yarra River, rural settings and urban settings, housing estates, Shillinglaw Cottage, Pigeon Bank at Kangaroo Ground, the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge with reference to the fight by locals in the 1970s to save it from replacement, Montsalvat, mudbrick making and its use as a building material, the use of mudbrick in the Eltham Community Centre blending harmoniously with the environment. Emphasises people living in the area due to the qualities of life provided. Also the Living and Learning Centre, St Andrews Markets and other local markets, the Eltham Leisure Centre, cricket and horse riding at Eltham Lower Park, the Infant Welfare Centre (part of the Eltham War Memorial), how residents are mindful of protecting their historical heritage, the CBA bank and Allwood House at Hurstbridge, Tracey Naughton about the Eltham "As we are" Community Banner project and the “River of Life banner”, the Parks and Gardens office in the former Police Residence building (now the Local History Centre), Alistair Knox Park, road planning and types of roads, tree canopy, Peck's Dam, green carparks, road drainage, Gordon Ford's garden and natural landscapes, and Were Street shops in Montmorency. Planning for shopping facilities and carparks with a population of 40,000 growing to 55,000, Arthur Street Mall and carpark, local village feel in the shopping centre. Councillors and Council staff featured include Mary Grant, Bob Manuell, Rodney Roschellor, John Cohen, Alan Baker. A Victorian F-class steam locomotive and passenger train at Eltham Railway Station, c.1904 Intending passengers were able to walk down from the Main Road straight onto the railway platform as the station initially only had tracks on the far side. The rail yard and storage shed for heavy goods is across the tracks. The platform shed-like building is best seen in the 1910 and 1912 photographs. The Victorian Railways F class locomotives were built in 1874 (the pattern engine), 1876–77 and 1879–80 by Beyer, Peacock & Company and the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat as 2-4-0 tender locomotives. They were normally used on passenger trains. In 1911 the Victorian Railways decided to convert seven of them into "motor" locomotives. These became 2-4-2 tanks. They kept their numbers 172–184 (evens only). The unrebuilt tender engines were taken off register between 1916 and 1922. The "motors" were taken off register between 1920 and 1929. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The medal was awarded to Charles J Henderson when he completed his Matriculation Examination at the very young age of 13 years. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college.This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool.The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment on the 20th of April 1970. The unit was granted for the first time the privilege of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The Freedom of Entry Parade occurred on the 14th of June 1970 led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bill Sprenger MID, MBE; the unit marched up View St in the CBD to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Jeffrey and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. A ceremonial scroll was presented to the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment citing the occasion and was proudly displayed in the entry foyer to Fortuna Villa up to October 2008. The Regiment continued to exercise its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.These black and white and colour photographs of the AHQ Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo on the 14th of June 1970. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection.
