Shows Glenferrie Road, near Linda St looking south, c1915 prior to the construction of the Railway overpass at Glenferrie Railway Station with H class tram 58 in the view. The tram line was constructed in 1913. It would appear that the level crossing gates are closed in the photograph. The building on the right-hand side by the horse-drawn cart was an ANZ bank until 2021. The closer building, a theatre (The Palace) has since been demolished and is now a Coles Supermarket. The level crossing was replaced with an overbridge in April 1916. The church in the background is the Immaculate Conception Church, without the spires - built after WW1. Tram originally built for The North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Co. (NMETL) in 1906 as a straight sill open cross bench tram. Photograph is of the tram body on an un-motored truck or wheel set and has been posed for an official MMTB photograph in 1925, soon after the workshops were completed. It shows the destination of "M River" for Maribyrnong River.Shows the only type of fully open cross bench tram operated by the MMTB. This style was popular as a summer tram in North America. Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. Photograph shows the device used to send a "telegraph" signal to the winding or engine house. They were positioned along the track and enabled the tram crew or a cable tram worker to send a signal about the cable. The crew member would set the pointer and depress the trigger. This sent the signal which was recorded on a telegraph tape, indicating the signal and the location of an incident. Installed by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith St Gertrude St. Fitzroy. The workmen are excavating the former cable tram track The inbound cable tram track remains in position. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around. Photo shows the workmen excavating and demolishing parts of the massive infrastructure needed at this curve to enable cable trams to pass around the sharp curve, still one of the sharpest on today's Melbourne tram system. The outside cable tram track remains in position. The MMBW plan shows a large cable sheave pit on the outside of the curve. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at an un-identified location, showing the removal of the yokes and track where two cable lines crossed over each other. Shows the former cable tram yokes that supported the slot rails and some details of the cable tunnels and pits. The man in the bottom left could be cutting the yokes with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. In the view are at the top of the photo some rails can be seen. There were a number of points where the cable tram crossed other electric or cable tram lines. Given the small work site and men involved the location could potentially be either Johnston Street and Smith Street or Johnston St and Nicholson Street. Photograph shows Hawthorn Tramways Trust bogie Tram 15 at Glenferrie and Riversdale Roads 1916-1920. The tram body was built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide and entered service during April 1916. It was renumbered N class 121 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board following the absorption of the Trusts by the MMTB in 1920. The tram is eastbound in Riversdale Road. The tracks of the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust can be seen in front of the tram. The conductor has alighted from the tram and walked forward to check for trams on Glenferrie Road. A Fire Brigade street fire alarm can be seen on the corner. The existing connecting curves at the corner were installed in 1925. The tramcar had a number of significant accidents and was disposed of in March 1938. Understood from the donor, that the house on the corner was known as "Pax" and demolished when commercial development of the corner occurred. The donor's family operated the Purvis Real Estate on the southeast corner from the building now known as Stotts Corner. Each has a hole in the base to enable it to be checked that it was empty prior to use or after being used. One of the 3d containers have a loose "washer" which shows the nature of the construction. Has been secured with a piece of string.Demonstrates the methodologies used to count coins and stack them in a revenue office. Provides a sample of each coin that would have been used.Brass coin holder - for use in counting 3d and 6d coins. Made from brass tube with a brass washer rolled or fixed to one end.
