A photo of Legacy House in the 1950s. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David H Dureau. The donation was initially used to purchase a different building at 342 Swanston St, which was sold in 1954, and 289 Swanston St was purchased. Melbourne Legacy is still using three floors of the building, with tenants on the ground floor. It was used in a newspaper article about the acquisition of the building for Legacy. It mentions the purchase price was undisclosed. It says the purchase was possible due to a generous gift of money from overseas in 1944. The building would be called the David H Dureau Memorial Building at the request of the donor. The article has a photo of Governor Sir Dallas Brooks and the Legacy President Bob Gaylard. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A document outlining the rules and objectives of the Intermediate Legacy Club (ILC). Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. A Legacy Memorial Address from 1986 after the death of Legatee Donovan Joynt VC. a long serving Legatee. When Legatee Joynt passed away on 5 May 1986, he was the club's oldest member and was an original member of the Legacy movement from 1923. The article includes his service to Legacy. It mentions his war service beginning with joining the Victorian Rifles in 1911. He served with the 8th Infantry battalion in Egypt and Europe. He was mentioned in despatches for conspicuous service in 4 famous battles, Ploygon Wood, at Guerudecourt, at River Lys defending Hazebrouck and when he won the VC at Chuignes near Villers-Bretonneux. A newspaper article about Legacy delivering firewood to 130 families in The Age on 21 March 1960. The article calls it 'Operation Wood Lift' but it was normally known as Operation Firewood. The widow was Mrs E Angus of Richmond. Operation Firewood provided help to widows and families by supplying and stacking firewood for the winter. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. A programme for a 'Gown of the Year' Gala parade in 1964 presented by the Mannequins and Models Guild of Australia at the Menzies Hotel. The association were members of the modelling profession. They organised the gala and gave their services free so that all proceeds may go to Melbourne Legacy. Every frock in the parade is an individual creation of Melbourne's top couturiers. A collection of documents which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. He outlined which legatees suggested different things - such as Selleck suggested the name of Legacy, Doolan put forward the child scheme. He also recorded birth dates of some Legatees: Selleck born 20/8/1895 ; Savige 26/6/1890 ; Ellet 30/3/1880 ; TW White 26/4/1888. Other documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Material held about the launch of a book by John McCredie at Legacy House in 2005. The book is called "Survival of the Fortunate", it is based on letters written from overseas during the Vietnam War to his fifteen year old daughter at boarding school who had asked her father what he had done during the war. The author takes the reader for a journey through his joining the RAAF, his training as a pilot in Australia, subsequent operational training as a bomber pilot in England and culminating in his being sent to India where served nearly two years as a pilot and captain of a Liberator bomber and later as Liberator transport captain. Mr McCredie approached Legacy for help in getting the letters published as a book and Legacy received a government grant to help him. The Book was then launched at Legacy House and proceeds from the sale of the book were forwarded to Legacy once the book broke even.
