The Siddeley Street institute, designed by renown architect Walter Butler was built in 1907. The foundation stone was laid in February 1907 by Lord Northcote and the institute was opened in December the same year.The Siddeley Street Seamen's Institute is the first central structure to be built in central Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River as the shipping was moving from Hobson's Bay to the city centre. Originally planned and budgeted for in the mid 1880s and petitioned by Ships masters in 1897 this was a long awaited project for the Mission.Sepia toned photograph depicting the Siddeley Street facility under construction. The lapel badge was worn to signify membership of the Harbour Lights Guild. Variations of this badge were made for different State Guilds by different jewellers or badge manufacturers. Variations also indicated during some eras if the wearer was a full member, worker or honorary.The Harbour Lights Guild was instrumental in securing funds to construct the current building at 717 Flinders Street, and in particular the Memorial chapel and Gymnasium. They were also dedicated volunteers who organised many social functions and events to offer visiting seafarers an opportunity to relax, have fun and socialise away from the ship. This book documents visitation fo seafarers to the Williamstown rest from 1945-47. The book appears to have been donated. The contents are signed in some instances by what appear to be whole crew. It provides an insight into the comments and also the practice of some seafarers who adopted other identities such as Churchill or Clement Atlee. The book predates the requirement to supply official ID and registration.The book and register is one of the earliest to survive, only one or two others have survived as records of seafarers visiting the Missions. This photograph forms part of the collection that has been accumulated at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria. It demonstrates that that there was an ample library once in use at the Mission. The photograph is thought to have been taken in the Chaplain's office next to the chapel. The photograph is part of a serie likely to have been taken by Bill Doyle (Reverend C.J. Eldridge-Doyle), who was a keen photographer like many of the chaplains as he often uses the Ilford paper to print his images.Reading have always been an incentive at the Mission, and books were always made available to seafarers insiste or brought on board ships via reading parcels.Black and white photograph of two men in the chaplain's library. The lapel badge was worn to signify membership of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. This badge was issued to honorary workers. In the earliest days this status indicated the member as a 1 guinea subscriber to The Harbour Light Guild. "Worker" members subscribed just a shilling but were required to contribute time at the Mission with hosting and facility maintenance. The form of logo indicates this badge as possibly dating back to the 1930s. Part of the collection purchased by the City of Portland from Kurtze's museum. Brendon Kurtze believed it was from the 'Constant', but the wreck was later proven to be the 'Regia' by V.A.S.Wooden painted figurehead believed to be from the barque 'Regia' (built 1835). Painted white female with floral wreath in hair, holding a scroll in both hands, sash over right shoulder, diamond-shaped object on ribbon around neck, beaded necklace, dress with puffed short sleeves, bare arms, hair set in curls and a bun on the back of head.
