Report - 41 pages, photocopied, stapled in top left hand corner - titled "East Burwood Tramway Extension - beyond Middleborough Road - Feasibility Study - September 1982". No details as who made the report, though attached to the front cover by a paper clip is a Metropolitan Transit Authority with compliments sheet, stamped "Information Officer", office address of 616 Little Collins St. Gives details of proposals considered, population and land use, existing services, patronage, operating costs, revenue and provides an assessment. Looks at costs for an extension only to Blackburn Road, Springvale Road and to Vermont South. Report showed the cost benefit ratio for Blackburn Road was 1, and less for the other possibilities. Sixty five page, plus manila covers, bound with a brown coloured comb binder report titled "Single-ended tram operations - A Feasibility study for the Bourke St and Collins Street routes". Looks at the background for the proposal, operational issues and an economic evaluation, including loading and unloading, a CBD loop and capital costs. Report has a note on page 2 that it was prepared prior to tendering for new trams. Report not dated as such but on front cover has a date "c1977", though based on the note done prior to ordering new trams could be c1976. See also Reg Item 338. Report notes it has many advantages and disadvantages, but the concept was supportive that single ended vehicles should be introduced. The establishment of Kiewa Valley House, was a significant victory for residents and senior citizens in the Kiewa Valley district. Plans were laid in the mid 1970’s and a proposal was formulated for a 12 bed unit nursing home to be attached to the Tawonga District General Hospital. The need for an aged care facility in Mount Beauty was prompted by recognition of the high ratio of senior citizens residing in the area. At the time residents had to travel to Beechworth, Wangaratta or Wodonga for care. On June 6th, 1980, an appeal to finance a 12 bed nursing wing was launched at a public meeting in Mount Beauty The Hospital and Charities Commission’s development board finally approved the application for government funds to build the 12 bed nursing home in early 1981. The official opening of the nursing home was on March 6th, 1985. Opening of the lounge extensions occurred in May, 1993 Many local residents have taken advantage of facilities at Kiewa Valley House when they became unable to manage independently in their own homes. This has meant they did not have to face the stress of leaving the area and being separated from their local family and friends. The School of Mines Ballarat began in 1870. It's location was the south end of Lydiard Street. Ballarat Junior Technical School began in 1913 and was boys only until 1951 when girls were included. They were under the control of the School of Mines Council. In 1967 the were three divisions. Each was internally distinguished. Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. In 1976 B.I.A.E. merged with State College of Victoria Ballarat - formerly Ballarat Teachers' College to become Ballarat College of Advanced Education, later to become Federation University. Letter written by H E Arblaster, Principal of Ballarat School of Mines, to The Editor, The Bendigo Advertiser. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Yields information about the considerations of State Cabinet of a proposal by the SEC to close a Bendigo tram line and thoughts to move the tramways from the SEC to MMTB Management.Newspaper clipping from the Ballarat Courier - 9/6/1953, titled "Cabinet stops tram move" reporting that state cabinet had vetoed the SEC's proposal to cease tram operations between Charing Cross and Golden Square from July 6. Quotes the Acting Premier Mr. Garvin. Follows a mass meeting of tramway employees the previous Sunday. Item notes that the Govt was planning to re-organise the SEC and the trams are likely to come under the control of the MMTB, or the Transport Board. Has a foreword by the Minister, Tom Roper, explains the system, shows high platform stops using the Hanover example, ability to couple tramcars, development of the project, an April 1987 review of the project, transport of people with disabilities, journey times, costs and saving and two page map of the system, showing a possible extension to Glenhuntly Road. Correspondence (Rose Park), 1940s
These are four letters and a document regarding the proposal in the 1940s by the Victorian Department of Lands and Survey to acquire sections of the property, Rose Park, to establish several Soldier Settlement farms. Rose Park, near Willatook, was owned by Stan Baulch (1897-1980), the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. Samuel Baulch had acquired the property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale, in 1893 and Stan had inherited portion of this property after his father’s death. He named his portion Rose Park. The Soldier Settlement Commission wanted to acquire 1500 acres of Rose Park but Stan Baulch argued successfully that the management of his farm could not withstand the loss of so much land and eventually 300 acres of Rose Park land was sold for closer settlement. Stan Baulch was a prominent member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years and contributed many articles and booklets on local historical matters. This correspondence is of interest as an example of the establishment of Soldier Settlement farms in Victoria post World War Two and the difficulties faced by some property owners opposed to the acquisition of their land. Shire of Eltham Archives: Series 69, Item 2 This video was produced for the Shire of Eltham in response to the 1985 Victorian Local Government Commission Report titled ‘The Restructure of Local Government in Victoria – Principles and Program’ (the Morris review). The recommendation was to amalgamate the Shires of Eltham and Diamond Valley, something that Eltham Council did not support as being appropriate for the shire or compatible with the 'Spirit of Eltham'. The video features Shire President, Cr. Mary Grant talking with the Hon. Pauline Toner MP and Max McDonald MP. Eltham Shire CEO Rodney Roschellor presents an alternate proposal for a shire merging more aligned to the 'Spirit of Eltham'.Also featured are Eltham icons such as the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge, Montsalvat, Eltham Community Centre along with mudbrick making, artist Matcham Skipper, the Green Wedge and St Andrews Market. The Snowy River Shire was a local government area in the Australian Alps region of New South Wales, Australia from 1939 until May 2016. It was named after the Snowy River that runs through it. Prior to 1936, it had been named as Dalgety Shire since establishment in 1906. This opening of the Monaro - Gippsland Road took place on 4th May 1961. There had long been a movement in Monaro for the construction of a road to connect Monaro and Gippsland, via Inglebyra and Black Mountain. The only track was for stock, made by pioneers many years ago, and it was very circuitous. It was stated at a meeting at Dalgety that the road would open up large areas for settlement for grazing, and for timber suitable for bridgé building. The road would assist stock deal ing between Monaro and Gippsland. It would also considerably shorten the distance from Victoria for tourists visiting Canberra and Kosciusko. A committee was formed to put the proposal before the Dalgety Shire Council in the 1930s.This item is a useful research tool.Four copies of a road opening program. It has black print on white. After the first world war there was a decision made to create a memorial. Legatees were involved in the process at various times and capacities. In particular Legatee Kemsley was vocal when the idea of the St Kilda Road site, which was favoured early on, was overturned and in 1926 there was pressure to change to a "provision of square" and Cenotaph at the intersection of Spring and Bourke Streets. Legacy Clubs voiced their opposition to this proposal by passing a resolution "That the Melbourne Legacy Club, representative of the returned soldiers in business in this city, whilst welcoming the Anzac Square Scheme as a city improvement, cannot support it as a War Memorial scheme and affirms its support for the Shrine of Remembrance in the Domain as the only War Memorial worthy of Victoria's unparalleled efforts in the Great War." The document was in an envelope with the History of the Shrine (01181). The envelope says 'The Origin of the Shrine of Remembrance p/p Legatees Kemsley and Joynt'. And the initial 'JMBA'?. It was in a file with other documents concerning the Shrine and it's history.A record of the events that led to the construction of the Shrine of Remembrance as noted by a Legatee at the time. There was an effort to record historical events for the "Archive Committee" which collected this an other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file with the items given numbest prefixed with an S (see items 01181 - 01190 and 01206 - 01211).A two page carbon copy of a letter typed on white quarto paper. In 1991, the Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA) produced 7 different options to provide public transport to the Doncaster area. See reference for background to the proposals. Six of the seven options have been found and collected. Each option provides a summary, costing based in a scope of works. The Options were: 1 - Light Rail to Doncaster Shoppingtown via Eastern Freeway/Doncaster Road 2 - Light rail to Mitcham Road/Springvale Road 3 - High-performance train to Doncaster Shoppingtown via Victoria Park station Eastern Freeway/Doncaster Road 4 - Heavy rail to Doncaster Shoppingtown via Eastern Freeway to Bulleen Road and underground to Shoppingtown 5 - Heavy Rail to Blackburn Road/George St East Doncaster 7 - Extension of the Camberwell Tram (72) along Burke Road from Cotham Road to Doncaster Road. Quilt
The quilt was made by Ada Maud Allen, the grandmother of the donor. Mrs Allen was from a Queensland wool growing property and was a prolific wool quilter. She was noted for her quilt making and also made items such as dressing gowns. She exhibited at many country shows and with the Queensland Country Women's Association. The wool used in the quilt was from her own property. The quilt was made in the 1930s and subsequently used by Mrs Allen's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Wool quilt made by Ada Maud Allen, c.1930s. Marong was first incorporated as a road district on 27 August 1861, and became a shire on 23 December 1864. On 1 October 1915, the Borough of Raywood, which was gazetted on 17 January 1865 on 23.31 square kilometres of land 28 kilometres north of Bendigo was united with Marong. On 1 October 1990, the Shire of Marong became a rural city, under the Local Government Act 1989. In a report on 17 February 1994, the Local Government Board recommended that the five councils in the Bendigo region merge to form a "super city", with a population of about 81,000. Marong, Eaglehawk and Huntly had earlier objected to the proposal, and the Board noted a weak no vote against the merger proposal in a referendum in the region; about 70% had voted against, but with a turnout of between 30% and 40% of eligible voters. The three councils filed a writ in the Supreme Court, alleging failure to follow process by the Minister for Local Government, Roger Hallam, but by the time the new "super city" was announced, the writ had not yet been heard, and on 24 March 1994, the Rural City of Marong successfully applied for an injunction blocking the publication of the gazette the following day abolishing the five councils and appointing three commissioners. The government responded by introducing legislation, the City of Greater Bendigo Bill 1994, to Parliament, to effectively override the Supreme Court action, with Hallam saying "the bill would make clear that the Government is determined to achieve its objective for a more efficient municipal structure for the Bendigo region." Marong mayor Robert Hynes described the action as "terribly disappointing", adding, "One way or another, I believe it does mean an end to our fight... it seems the Government are above the law to me." On 6 April 1994, Marong voted to drop the Supreme Court action, effectively in doing so voting itself out of existence, and on 7 April 1994, the Rural City of Marong was abolished, and along with the City of Bendigo, the Borough of Eaglehawk and the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, was merged into the newly created City of Greater Bendigo.
