Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 28 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. John Chapman has written in 'Bushwalking Clubs - A Brief History', about the establishment in Victoria of the first bushwalking club in 1888, and the popularisation of bushwalking during the interwar period. Henry Christian's 'walks' appear to have been undertaken solely or with a companion/s. This photo was taken on a trip between Cockatoo and Gembrook in Victoria and shows two horses grazing in a paddock to the left of an 'exotic' tree in full bloom. Warrnambool Bowls’ club was established in 1890. The club was initially established in Liebig St and was the sole club in Warrnambool before the establishment of St. John’s Bowls club in 1926. Warrnambool City Memorial Bowling club was established in 1950 with Lawn tennis and Dennington following in the 1960’s.It was around 1990 that the club moved from Liebig St to Timor St on the site of the St Joseph’s tennis courts. Ned Williams was born in Bristol, England in 1825 and died at Ballarat 7 September 1900. Ned took a leading role in transforming what was a swamp (Yuille's Swamp) into the modern day Lake Wendouree. Ned was the establishment and promotion of water sports on the lake, he was well liked in the community and highly regarded as a leading citizen, an athlete, a sportsman and as an oarsman. This memorial was commissioned on his passing in 1900.The item is of aesthetic and historic significance to the people of BallaratA Carrara marble fountain on a basalt base. Eight tiers of marble, the central element is bordered by four pillars with decorative capitals on top. The pillars and capitals are secured with copper allot rod at the upper junction and ferrous rods at the base. Once had a working drinking fountain.Created by the friends of Edward King (Ned) Williams in commemoration of his qualities as a pioneer citizen, oarsman, athlete, and sportsman. The Padbury family were early pioneers of Kew, running for over a century a funeral parlour in Cotham Road. The photograph of Mr Whitman can be reliably dated to 1914 or later due to an article on the establishment of Godfrey Roberts' atelier at the rear of Mr Chenoweth's in Glenferrie Road (Source: 'Godfrey E Roberts Photographic Studio', Hawthorn Kew Camberwell Citizen, 5 June 1914, p. 2)This, and other photographs of members of the Whitman-Padbury families was donated by Mrs Clarrie Thomson, a descendant of the families, and a member of the Society. This booklet, by Rosamund Duruz, gives the history of the schools in the Heytesbury Forest area. The Heytesbury Shire Council was established in 1863 and the first schools in the area opened in the 1870s. Most of them were closed when Timboon Consolidated School (later Timboon High School) opened in 1948. The Heytesbury Forest was largely deforested by the Bailey Closer Settlement Scheme of the 1930s and later the establishment of more farming properties in the 1950s. This booklet is of interest as a comprehensive history of the schools in the Heytesbury Forest area pre 1970. It will be useful for researchers. This is a soft-cover booklet of 63 pages. This photograph was taken in August, 1938 some eight years prior to the establishment of Mt. Beauty as a township. The area was still being used for grazing, and the land was eventually acquired from the local land owners by the State Electricity Commission. The construction of the road, from Tawonga to the High Plains, was commenced in April of this year. This allowed men and heavy equipment to be transported to the work sites for the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme This photograph is important as it shows the upper Kiewa Valley as it was before the establishment of the town of Mt. Beauty. The land has been cleared of natural growth and has been used for grazing cattle. By 1946 housing construction had commenced for the new town of Mt. Beauty and by 1948 street construction in the southern part of the town was completed as far as Hill Street.A black and white photograph of farmland with Mt. Emu in the background. This has been taken from where Mt. Beauty township now stands prior to road making and the erection of houses. A line of trees below the hill line indicates the position of the East Kiewa River. (No. 5 in a set of 8) Handwritten in black ink on the upper left corner of the photograph is the inscription 'Kiewa 25/8/38' and the number 5 has been stamped on the upper right hand corner. The Male Hospital in Sunbury was one of the buildings that was within the grounds of the Sunbury Mental Hospital, later known as the Sunbury Asylum, that opened on 1st December 1879 on She-oak Hill ( Jacksons Hill). Patients and staff from the Ballarat Asylum were transferred there. Prior to the establishment of the Asylum, the Sunbury Industrial School occupied the site from 1865. The Sunbury Asylum, later known as Caloola, continued to operate until the 1992.The Sunbury Mental Hospital was an important institution and was the main source of employment for Sunbury residents for 120 years. These volumes reproduce the diary material and the landscapes and sketches of Charles La Trobe, the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales ( 1839- 1851) and Lieutenant Governor of the colony of Victoria ( 1851-54 ). La Trobe is regarded as the man most responsible for the establishment of Warrnambool in 1847. His diaries document his trips to the Warrnambool region in 1845, 1846, 1848 and 1849 before and after the town site was settled.These volumes are of artistic significance being beautifully and expensively produced. The volumes contain information of vital importance to our knowledge of our early Warrnambool history. Other important details in the diary include information on early shipwrecks and the first settlers in our district in our district, especially the Allan brothers..1 This is a burgundy leather bound book of 380 pages. It has gold lettering on the cover and the spine and an oval inset in the centre of the front cover containing a coloured portrait of Charles La Trobe. The pages contain black and white and coloured art works and sketches and printed material. There is a burgundy coloured ribbon for marking pages The book is encased in a hard leather cover with a cut out window with gold edging. .2 This is a burgundy leather bound book of 343 pages. The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Thomas Bath came to Australia in 1849, establishing a butchering establishment at Geelong. He mined during the rushes at various sites, eventually coming to Ballarat where he established a hotel now known as Craig's Royal Hotel. He held the first publican's license on Ballarat (1854) and his hotel was known as The Ballarat, later changed to Bath's Hotel; after the sale to Mr Craig in 1857 Thomas Bath established his farm Ceres, at Learmonth. Thomas Bath was instrumental in the formation of Ballarat and was a champion of all public institutions. He died in 1901. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. The history was compiled at the direction of the Shire of Whittlesea in 1961, by Mr. S.T.Grey.
