‘Worlingworth’, Yarra River, Eltham Original homestead on the property ‘Worlingworth’, a large residence and surrounding farm site standing on a knoll above the River Yarra in Banoon Road, Eltham. The present house was built about 1922 and was originally owned by Mr A.R. Read, a stock and station agent and member of the Stock Exchange (who left the district in early 1926 to take up permanent residence at his Warburton property). It became the home of notable anthropologist Prof. Dr. Donald Thomson (1901-1971) and Mrs. Gladys Thomson who were married in 1925 and had twin sons in 1934 and is considered historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' This etching by British engraver Arthur Willmore was created from Russian born artist Nicholas Chevalier’s original watercolour landscape of Bontharambo, Wangaratta (Chevalier’s watercolour is held in the collection of the National Library of Australia). Chevalier moved to Australia during the Colonial period and is famous for his landscape paintings, which were most commonly commissioned by wealthy landowners or merchants wanting to record their material success. Bontharambo is a historic property located in Wangaratta which was made famous by pastoralist Joseph Docker who took up the Bontharambo run in 1838 and has remained in the family since. Frank Millett and his nephew Hopper Cahill are the two people standing by the building after spending the day shooting rabbits in 1922. They are standing in front of the Aitkens Gap Police Barracks. In the 1860s the gaol and stables were sold to George Millett and added to the Millett property. The Barracks and the new farm homestead were built by Mick Morrison. The Bald Hill Hotel at Aitkens Gap on the Bendigo Road (Calder Highway) was guilt by George Millett in 1854 and functioned until the gold began to run out after the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s. The Millett family continued to farm until 1967. The family also and operated hotels in the local area. William Dower brought his family to the Dandenongs in 1898, taking up 10 acres. His property was Cambridge Gardens located between the present Mt Dandenng Tourist Road and Yarrabee Road. William and his wife Elizabeth had seven boys (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar, Robert) and four girls (Emmy, may, Ada and Ruby). Brooklyn Park homestead built 1875 by Stephen George Staughton, son of Simon Staughton. In 1907 the residence was refurbished for Cr Stephen John Staughton who was returning from England with his bride. The building contained over 25 rooms some 25x20 feet. There were elaborately decorated rooms with friezes, embossed wall papers, massive curtains, marble and carved mantle pieces. A Ryder Erickson Hot air engine pumped water from underground tanks up to elevated tanks to circulate water through the house. Acetylene gas generator for 100 light and chandeliers. There are three copies of this photograph, the first was formerly in a frame and was in the possession of the Shire of Grenville until it was donated to LDHS. (Frame is in room 01 at Resource Centre. It is understood photograph was removed from frame with a view to having it restored.) The second copy of the photograph is mounted photograph 233 and the third is a copy held in the Clarke family file. John Clarke was the owner of Emu Hill station. The circular cast iron object is a lid that was originally fastened into a ship tank. This particular lid is cast with the name ‘Lancaster & Co Bow London E’ in capitals in a continuous circle on the outer edge of the lid face, and has the words ‘Bow Tank Works’ on the inner circle. It is the same type of round heavy lid that was made by tank manufacturer John Bellamy although it may be a younger example. According to Pearson, the Lancaster & Co firm produced tanks between 1910 and 1930 from their works in Bow, East London. It was possibly preceded by the company, Lancaster & Bawn, which ran between the 1870s and 1890s.Pearson has collected a list of Lancaster & Co tank lids that he and others have sighted at various locations in Australia including Coolgardie, WA; Gulgong Museum, NSW; the Quarantine Station, Sydney NSW; Blundell’s Cottage, NSW; and Woolmers homestead complex, TAS. In addition, Lewis has identified lids at Ayrdale, NSW, and the shearing shed at Murndal homestead, Western Victoria. It is most likely that more than three lids survive in Victoria and more will be identified, however, as noted by Pearson, ‘surviving lids are far less numerous than the tanks themselves, presumably because the uses to which the tanks were put did not require the lid to be retained’.Parks Victoria has identified five tank lids in the lightstation collections. There is another Lancaster & Co lid at Cape Otway and possibly a second example there as well. In addition there are Bellamy lids at Point Hicks and Cape Otway and an unidentified lid at Wilsons Promontory, and a tank without a lid at Wilsons Promontory. The Lancaster & Co ship tank lid has first level contributory significance for its historic values.Circular cast-iron disc, with raised outer ridge with inscription and inner depression with inscription. The original Barnedown Run consisted of 51,280 acres and was first taken up in 1839 by Henry Grey Bennett and was held under "Pre-emptive right" until it was subdivided in 1856 into Muskerry and Mt. Pleasant. In 1853 John Harney arrived in Australia and took up storekeeping at White Hills. In 1855 he took up land which was originally part of Barnedown Run and erected part of the present homestead. In 1860 Harney entertained Bourke and Wills exploration party at Adelaide Vale on the Campaspe River. Mr Harney owned a Hotel which was burnt down in 1861. Isabella Park Taylor, nee Dawson (1842-1929), friend of Western Victorian First Nations people, and student of their languages and customs. Isabella grew up at "Kangatong" (1844-1866) in the company of First Nations people and became fluent in their languages. With her father, James Dawson, she wrote the book "Australian Aborigines" (1881). She married William Andrew Taylor in 1877 and they built a fine homestead on their property at "Renny Hill'' near Camperdown, Victoria. Together they had two children, Effie, born 1878 and Katherine in 1880. William Taylor (1849-1927) was a farmer, Councillor and civic leader. In 1883 he gifted the world's oldest statue of Robert Burns to the people of Camperdown. This book has the signature of Joseph Ware of Minjah, Caramut, Victoria. Joseph Ware came, with his parents, from England to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) in 1822. With his brother, Jeremiah, he came to the Port Phillip Colony (Victoria) in 1838 and settled in the Colac area (Wooriwyrite and Koort-Koort-Nong stations). With his brothers or alone Joseph then held the runs of Minjah, Mustons Creek (Barwidgee), Sinclair West and Springburn. Joseph Ware was a highly successful pastoralist, breeding sheep, cattle and horses and importing Shorthorn cattle. Ware was connected with Minjah from 1845 to his death in 1895. The homestead at Minjah which still stands today was built by Joseph Ware in 1870. This book is of interest because of its antiquarian nature. But it is far more important because it was once the property of Joseph Ware. He and his brothers were most influential pastoralists in South Western Victoria in the 19th century. This is a hard cover book of 630 pages. It has a Preface, an Introduction, five Books with Chapters on the history of Greece and an Index. The cover is dark brown leather, now stained and mottled, with ‘Robertson’s Greece’ embossed in red and gold lettering on the spine. The top of the first page has been cut out and there is considerable staining throughout the book. There is one insert map of ancient Greece and some scribble (perhaps a signature) on the first and last pages. Four Posts Inn. Glenorchy. Building no longer exists. Located on the site now known as Glenorchy (Victoria). Glenorchy is approximately 20Km from the former Ashen's pastoral run occupied by Dugald McPherson. The Four post Inn was a "Staging Camp" for the police escort route during the transportation of gold by road from Mount Alexander gold fields (Bendigo) to Adelaide South Australia in 1852-53. The police escort is known to have called in at Ashens homestead to visit Dugald McPherson. The Four Post Inn was the scene on the occasion of and encounter between the police escort and bushrangers. At a later date The Four Post Inn was a staging camp for the horse drawn coach service between Stawell and Horsham.stawell

This secretaire once stood proudly in the de Kerilleau homestead at Wodonga. The homestead had been built for William Huon, son of the early pastoralist Paul Huon, in 1870 and named after the family's ancestral estate in France. The original lease of the Wodonga Run was granted to Paul Huon as No. 202 on 7th February 1837, about a year after his cousin Charles Huon had squatted on the land. Kenneth Darnton Watson bought de Kerilleau homestead in 1922 where the Watson family lived for three generations, caring for the land and serving the Wodonga community. Kenneth, his son Ian Darnton Watson and his grandson John Kenneth Darnton Watson all served on the Wodonga Council. John Kenneth Darnton Watson was born on 28 August 1960 in Wodonga. After completing his primary schooling locally, he boarded at Geelong College from 1973. John joined the rowing crews, starting in the 8th VIII crew and reaching the 1st VIII crew in 1978. He received multiple House colours awards for cross country, athletics and rowing and received School colours for rowing. On completion of his schooling, John spent some time jackarooing before studying farm management at Marcus Oldham College. He then returned home to de Kerilleau, Wodonga to manage the family property. In 1984 John married Christine Honybun, daughter of David Lewis Honybun and Marian Josephine Edkins. John and Christine had three sons. John was community minded and involved in a number of local organisations such as Apex and agricultural societies. He was elected to Wodonga City Council in 1997, serving until 2004. Due to increased pressure on available land to cater for the growth of Wodonga, some of the property was sold and in 2003 John donated 200 ha of Huon Hill ‘s western slopes to the City of Wodonga. After this time, he moved away from farming to become a Hungry Jack's franchisee. In 2009, the hard decision was made to sell de Kerilleau and John and his family moved into Wodonga. After sadly losing Christine to cancer in 2017, John became a member and Deputy Chairperson of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Board and Ambassador for the Sunshine Walk. Tragically after his own cancer battle, John Kenneth Darnton Watson passed away on 24 August 2023, aged 62 years following a life of service to the Wodonga community.This item is significant because it was owned by a prominent Wodonga family and came from a Historic Homestead in WodongaA secretaire with bookcase made of cedar. The bottom section has two cupboards with shelves. These doors support the desk when it is fully opened. Above this section is one large drawer, the front of which opens by pressing a small internal button on each side. The open drawer reveals a desk with a leather writing mat and several compartments. When marking a boundary for a registered plan, a surveyor would place “Reference Marks” with a stated bearing and distance to a boundary corner. These trees were typically marked by cutting the bark of the tree in a shield or blaze. Until July 1886, surveyors were only able to use trees as reference marks to boundary corners. After July 1886 surveyors were able to use “permanent marks” which were either a glass bottle, gas pipe or iron bolt (for homestead surveys only). This photograph shows the reference tree, 83 miles from Marlo via the original surveyed road v ia Sydenham Inlet and Tamboon, south of Mount Drummer to the New South Wales border - now the Princes Highway.This is a pictorial record of an old survet tree. Knowledge of their location, abundance and condition not only provide important insights to past survey practice, but also provide a lasting legacy of a regions land-use history. This piece of an old bath dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s. The bath would have been used by the Partington or Bosch families at the property at Point Lookout. This piece is from a bath that was used by our grandfather (born in 1872) when the family lived at Point Lookout before the Partington family bought Willis Vale in 1878. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child and the roof visible may be that of the Child Family Homestead. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. The Centre for Environmental Management as established in July 1995 as a strategic development initiative to consolidate the University's position as a centre for industry linked environmenttal teaching, resarech and consultancy. Page 19 "SPECIAL INITIATIVES Establishment of field Research Stations Two areas of concentration of research effort for the Centre are the Otways in the south western Victoria and the Scotia Country in the rangelands of NSW. In both these areas it is essential that ther be a secure accomodation abase for research students. In the former case there is a need for a sheltered base to enable year round field work in cold wet conditions and in the latter a base with a reliable water supply and the facilities to allow field work in very hot dry conditions which prevail from much of the year. It has been an ibjective of the Centre to establish field stations at these two sites and considerable progress has been made through the year. (i) Nanya Field Station in the Scotial Country Through the generosity of the owner, Mr Rob Taylor, an unused homestead on Nanya Station was made available to the Centre. Largely through voluntary labour during research field trips during the year this previously derelict homestead has been restored to functionality and now has facilities for up to 20 research workers with a reliable water supply, cooking, washing, and refrigeration facilities. (ii) Cape Otway Resaerch Centre Negotiations have continued through the year with the potential lessees of the Cape Otway Lighthouse Precinct with the support of the Vice Chancellor and other potential user groups within the University these have reached a successful outcome. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. This cup, saucer and plate are part of a tea set. It was given by Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the ship Loch Ard which was wrecked near Port Campbell in 1878, to Jane Shields, the young woman who supported her while she was recovering from her ordeal at Glenample homestead at Princetown. The two women remained friends after Eva Carmichael returned to her home in Britain and was married. Jane Shields also married and it was when her daughter visited Eva in England that she was given the tea set to take back home to her mother. Jane died in 1932 and Eva died in 1934 and the tea set was inherited by Jane’s daughters. In 1975 Jane’s daughter, Mrs Ann Fuller, donated a cup, saucer and plate to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The handle of the cup was mended. These items (cup, saucer and plate) are of high significance as they are closely connected to the wreck of the Loch Ard, and one of the two survivors, Eva Carmichael. Memorabilia connected to Eva Carmichael are precious and rare. These china items (cup, saucer and plate) are coloured royal blue and gold. .1 The cup has a gilt rim on the cup edge and base. There is a small crack on the side of the cup and the handle has been broken and mended. .2 The saucer is glazed on both sides with a small fault in the middle. It has a gilt band on the inner rim. .3 The plate is glazed on both sides with some evidence of scratching on the plate surface. One of a collection of over 400 photographs in an album commenced in 1960 and presented to the Phillip Island & Westernport Historical Society by the Shire of Phillip Island. A tragedy occurred at the McHaffie home in 1868. When a friend of John McHaffie, Captain Grossard, was accidentally shot when a fellow guest on the verandah of the homestead mishandled a gun during preparations for a hunt. Captain Grossard's dying wish was that he should be buried on a cliff near the sea. His lonely grave is still to be seen at the end of Grossard Point Road. This inscription appears on the headstone: "Sacred to the memory of William Phillip Grossard, formerly of Bideford, Devonshire, many years captain in the Merchant Service, who was killed by accidental discharge of a gun during a visit to Phillip Island, the 17th December, 1868. The Gordons were architects and were associated with many buildings still standing in Albury and Wodonga, St Patrick's Church and the de Kerilleau Homestead among them. They established Vermont Orchard on 74 acres to the south of the Wodonga settlement. Here they grew fruit and nuts for the domestic and export market. The enterprising family also set about transforming some of the land by clearing it, creating streets and making general improvements. It was the biggest subdivision in Wodonga at the time. The 234 allotments in the Wodonga Estate were put up for sale by auction in May 1890. A total of 200 people were said to have attended. Gordon, William, Charles and Vermont streets in Wodonga are named after the family. This bell was used at the Vermont orchard to signal the beginning and end of the working day, as well as lunch breaks.The Gordon Family orchard bell is made of cast iron. It includes the inscription "J. C. W../G./1858." This is thought to represent the initials of John Gordon and sons Walter Joseph and Charles Goodwin Sylvester Gordon. There is some conjecture about this due to the date "1858". John was born in London, England in 1823 and died in 1880. Walter is generally accepted to have been born in 1857 and died 1903. In one family tree Charles is recorded as being born on 28 January 1858 but his birth was registered in 1860. The mystery of the date is therefore not fully resolved.On one side of the bell "J. C. Huon took up his country in 1836, living then about 13 miles from the present homestead, the front portion of which was built about 1870. The actual age of an earlier portion is not known. Excellent for "Barmagulla". Image 2: "THE HERMITAGE" - Home of the Taylor family, is 13 miles from Wodonga. It was begun in 1852 and finished in 1854, and is the oldest occupied home in the area. The original atmosphere of the interior is maintained. As "Gooloora" its little balcony would provide a splendid vantage point for MacLough's speech.
