Ostrich eggs were a novelty item found in many homes in the 19th and early 20th centuries, though in Australian homes they were more likely to be emu eggs. Some ostrich eggs may have been brought to Australia from South Africa after the Boer War or purchased by travellers to foreign lands at other times. This ostrich egg has no known provenance.This ostrich egg has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for 45 years and the only known connection it has to Warrnambool is seen in the fact that the donor was Mrs Uebergang and the Uebergang name is well-known in our district as the Uebergangs were pioneering settlers in the Allansford/ Warrnambool area. This is a cream-coloured ostrich egg resting in a circular cavity in the centre of a rectangular wooden frame. These scales come from the Nullawarre Post Office and would have been used there for most of the 20th century. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. It was first settled in the late 1860s and 70s and the main agricultural pursuit for the area today is dairying. The first Nullawarre school was opened in 1878 and the Nullawarre Post Office operates today in the Nullawarre General Store. These scales are of interest as a memento of the type of weighing scales used in Post Offices in Victoria in the early to mid 20th century. They are also of local interest as they come from the Nullawarre Post Office.This is a metal set of scales with a balance mechanism on a metal stand. The balance has a circular tray at one end to hold weights An oval dish to hold items to be weighed is a separate item that sits at the other end of the balance. These dinner plates were used at the Criterion Hotel in Kepler Street, Warrnambool, about the mid 1900s. The Criterion Hotel was opened in 1872 with the first licensee, John Tate. The Humm family was associated with the hotel from the 1880s to 1919 and members of the McGennan family were licensees and owners of the hotel for over 50 years in the 20th century. The hotel closed in 2008 and the building was demolished in 2013.These plates are of great interest as excellent examples of the dinner plates used at the Warrnambool Criterion Hotel in the mid 20th century. The Criterion Hotel was a Warrnambool landmark for over 130 years.These are two white vitrified china plates. One is slightly smaller than the other but they are both dinner –plate size and made for hotel use. They are circular in shape with a wide outer band and the base or body of the plates slightly recessed. The name of the hotel is printed in red on the side of the plates in an oval decorative pattern. Details of the manufacturer and supplier are printed on the bottom of the plates. The containers in this set would have held salt, pepper, and perhaps two types of vinegar. When bought some time in the 20th century it was a high quality item and would have been found in the home of a person of some means and perhaps used when visitors were being entertained. Today a simple salt and pepper set is more likely to be used during meals. This cruet set has no known local provenance but it is a very attractive item and is kept as a memento of the past. This cruet set has a metal base with four round metal knobs on the bottom. The base has a handle in a bowed shape with a circular top and midway across the handle are attached four rectangular metal shapes for holding the condiments. Four cut glass containers slot into the four holders. The containers are all rectangular-shaped, two with a narrower neck and a glass stoppers, one with a narrower neck and a metal top with a perforated lid and one with a metal top with a hinged lid. This is a bathroom jug and could have been part of a set for bathroom use. It would have held mainly water, hot or cold. In the days before there were sinks with hot and cold running water in bathrooms, a jug such as this was an essential item and would have been in common use up to the first three decades of the 20th century. The body of the jug is spherical or bulbous shaped, tapering to a smaller neck and a large lip. These photograph wallets were use in the first half of the 20th century when films were sent away to be processed. Kodak used these packaging items to promote their brand. Images of women were very popular on these wallets, with the ‘Kodak Girl’ positioned by Kodak as an important mascot or symbol to suggest the ease and accessibility of photography to the masses – a symbol which drew on traditional understandings of gender roles.They are colourful reminders of a time period when people eagerly awaited the arrival of their processed prints. This coat would have been part of a St Johns Brigade ambulance uniform. The buttons were made by A J Parkes, who manufactured buttons for the Australian Defence force. A J Parkes began manufacturing plastic injection moulded buttons from the early 1980's which suggests that the coat would have been made and worn during the late 20th century.This item is representative of a particular piece of uniform that would have been worn by a member of the St Johns Ambulance Brigade. It has historic significance as an item dating to the late 20th century which may have been used in the service of wounded military personnel. It also has some areas of staining which could have been coused by contact with blood. This could potentially be useful for scientific research purposes.Off white knee length coat with long sleeves. There is an epoulette on each shoulder and pointed collars. There is a deep waist pocket on either side of the coat. There is one silver plastic button at the top of each pocket. These have the St John Ambulance symbol on the front, which consists of an eight pointed cross, with two very small lions and two very small unicorns nestled in the corners of the cross. These motifs are surrounded by the words "THE ST JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE". The epoulettes are fastened with one identical button each. Underneath each epoulette there is also a clear plastic button attached the shoulder seam. Each sleeve has a 36mm long cuff which is fastened with one St John Ambulance Brigade button each. There are 10 clear plastic buttons that fasten the entire front of the coat. The back has two pleats commencing near the nape of the neck. The back of the collar on the interior seam has a label which has been cut and shows only a small amount of detail. Printed in faded blue on the label is: "E.R. This child’s wash board, a play item, is possibly home-made. Wash boards for rubbing and washing clothes were common household clothes- washing items in Australia until the mid 20th century, along with wood coppers, washing troughs, copper sticks and simple wringers. By the 1950s and 60s washing machines were becoming more prevalent and the wash board was no longer a common item in households. Rolling pins have been found to have existed in several early civilizations and glass pins were especially popular in the first half of the 20th century. They were mostly filled with very cold water or ice when pastry dough was being rolled but sometimes they were filled with hot water, depending on the food preparation being rolled. They could still be found in some kitchens today. This item is retained as a reminder of a household item that was used in the past but may still be of use today.This is a clear glass cylindrical object with two glass handles at each end. Fob (or pocket) watches were developed in Europe in the 16th century. These watches were designed to be carried in a small pocket and attached through the means of a 'fob' which could be a chain or made from a variety of materials such as leather. This pocket watch was manufactured by the Western Clock Co. (Westclox) in the mid 20th century. The company was large and manufactured inexpensive watches with this style being an example of their ‘dollar watches’.This item is of social significance as an example of an inexpensive men's watch available during the mid 20th century.Men's silver pocket watch with a white dial, black arabic numerals and outer minute divisions around the edge. This is an early 20th Century photograph of the Warrnambool Pipe Band with the three men identified. The Band has been photographed at a recreation ground indicating that the Band was possibly performing at a Western Caledonian Games or gathering.The Warrnambool Pipe Band was established in 1906 and went into recess from 1916 to 1935. Today under the name of Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums it performs regularly in the area.No other information is available on the men identified. This item is of considerable significance because it conveys a fine impression of members of the Warrnambool Pipe band in the early 20th Century. It is a rare item, redolent with history. This is a protector used to cover the shirts or jackets of military or other uniforms that had brass buttons. The horseshoe shape enabled the button to be isolated from the rest of the top and made it easier to clean and polish without getting the jacket soiled. It would have been a common item in military or militia or band member families in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They may even be still used today for regimental uniforms. This item has no known local provenance but is of interest as an example of a cleaning object in days gone by. This bottle was used in the pharmacy business of H.O.Wilkinson. He had a chemist’s shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool (number 119 Liebig Street today) early in the 20th century. The dates found for this business are from 1906 to 1914. Wilkinson also had pharmacies in Melbourne and Maryborough. His cough mixture, Wilkinson’s Pectorine, selling at two shillings and sixpence a bottle, was advertised as ‘the finest preparation for the cure of stubborn coughs and colds’. This bottle is of considerable interest as it is one of the few items in our collection associated with an early 20th century Warrnambool chemist, H.O.Wilkinson. This is a clear glass bottle with a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular top. The stopper is made of cork. Trunk is made strong for long journeys and rough use. Tray compartments would have been fitted inside the lid for storage of smaller items such as hats, umbrellas and underclothing. The illustration pasted inside the lid is similar to those shown in women's fashion journals of the 1880s and 1890s. A similar trunk was found in the catalogue of Anthony Hordern & Sons, a large and famous late 19th to mid 20th century retailer in Sydney,.This trunk is an example of the typical travel luggage of people migrating to the Colony of Australia in the late 19th century.Wooden cabin trunk, rectangular, brown in colour. This is a bottle that contained Dr Law’s medicine for diseases of the liver and kidney. In the late 1800s Richard Kennedy, the Warrnambool chemist, had the sole rights to produce Dr. Law’s medicines in his manufacturing business. Dr Law, from Boston, U.S.A., was a prolific and popular producer of patent medicines. This bottle may have been produced during the time of Richard Kennedy or later on the 20th century when the business of R.F.Kennedy and Co., was still operating or it may have come from any local chemist selling Dr Law’s products in the 20th century. The fact that the label on the bottle has an image of a lighthouse on it is a further link with Richard Kennedy who used a lighthouse image as his trademark (albeit a different image).Richard Kennedy came to Warrnambool in the late 19th century and established a retail, wholesale and manufacturing pharmaceutical business in Timor Street. This business was regarded as one of the largest and finest in Victoria. Richard Kennedy was prominent in community and civic affairs in Warrnambool. This bottle is of interest as a good example of the many patent medicines available in the 19th century. Dr Law’s remedies were sold world-wide. It is also of interest because of its possible link s with the prominent Warrnambool chemist, Richard kennedy. This is a glass bottle with a cork stopper that has been pushed into the neck. The glass was originally clear but it is now very black and stained from the dried liquid that was in the bottle. The label on the front of the bottle, pasted on, has black and white printing with an image of a lighthouse in the middle. The label on the back is pasted on and contains directions for use of the medicine. R. F. Kennedy operated as a pharmacy in the late 19th and early 20th century in Timor Street Warrnambool. Mr Kennedy manufactured a large number of drugs and perfumes on a wholesale basis as well as very impressive retail business. Around the mid 1880’s they were shipping 5000 dozen bottles of Janos salts annually. Boracic acid was one such product which was commonly used product as an insecticide, herbicide and in cleaning products.A common item which was manufactured by one of the largest manufacturing chemists of the area. This collar holder would have been used in the early to mid 20th century in the days when men's shirts often had detachable collars so that the collars could be changed each day and the shirt part would not have to be washed so frequently. The metal crest on the holder with a crown on top suggests that the wearer of the detachable collars could have held a Government office or been a member of one of the Defence Forces. This collar holder has no known local provenance but is kept as a memento of the days (80 to 100 years ago and more) when men wore shirts with detachable collars. This is a rectangular-shaped leather object which has been folded over once to form a wallet with an extra piece at the end to close over the wallet. The top piece closing device has two metal press studs. The insides of the wallet are lined with buff-coloured material hemmed with cotton stitching with two extra pieces folding over to hold the collars. The wallet contains one white collar with one collar stud. On the front of the wallet is gold-coloured printing and attached is a metal badge or crest. Item used around the first quarter of the 20th century The suitcase didn't catch on until the end of the 19th century, it was quite literally as a case for suits. A typical suitcase came equipped with an inner sleeve for storing shirts, and sometimes a little hat box on the side. But even in the early 20th century, the "dress-suit case" was only one of countless styles of container travellers could buy, from steamer trunks to club bags. By the late 19th century a significant point was reached in the history of transportation, it was the beginning of mass tourism, rather than travel for travels sake made use of by the wealthy in society. Travel wasn't just for the wealthy any more but everyone. Suitcases began as an afterthought in the luggage and leather goods business, but they soon became the very symbol of travel. An 1897 wholesale price list included the words "suitcase" only twice in a 20-page list of luggage types. In America a 1907 T. Eaton & Co. Catalogue, trunks took up a full page while suitcases share a page with club bags and valises. In a 1911 a United Company catalogue, now displayed around 40 per cent of the advertisements were for suitcases. Early suitcases were lighter and more portable than trunks, but they were still bulky by today's standards. Leather, canvas, wicker or thick rubbery cloth was stretched over a rigid wood or steel frame. Corners were rounded out using brass or leather caps and some had wooden rails running around the case. Until steamship travel declined during the mid-20th century, many of these types of the case were advertised as waterproof with some lightweight models marketed specifically to women. The item gives us a snap-shot as to how people undertook travelling during a time when undertaking a journey for pleasure at the end of the 19th and early 20th century was mainly only for the wealthy. This time saw the beginnings of change from the wealthy in society being able to travel, to the onset of mass tourism.
