This stencil has been made to imprint the label, 'Britain Relief Appeal' on to parcels and packages sent to Britain in the late 1940s and the early 1950s from the City of Warrnambool. Britain endured severe rationing of food, clothing, petrol and furniture from 1940 because of the outbreak of World War Two and this rationing continued in some form after the war up to 1954. Australian towns and cities established organizations such as Food For Britain and sent regular parcels of food and clothing to Britain during those times. The British Relief Appeal in Warrnambool (via the Warrnambool Food For Britain committee) was sponsored by the Warrnambool City Council, Toc H, Australian Red Cross, and various local charities and businesses. This stencil has been made to label packaged produce (wool bales, packaged meat etc) from a farm in Grasmere, near Warrnambool. The name, W. Robinson, suggests that this is William Robinson the son of James and Jane Robinson. James Robinson came to Australia in 1857 and he and his family farmed at Springvale at Hopkins Point, then at what was termed 'Manning's old Purnim Farm' on the Merri Rive at Grasmere (the Manning brothers, Frederick and John were early farmers in the district). The Robinson brothers, James and Stuart were well-known in the Warrnambool district as champion ploughmen. James's son, William married firstly Christina MacLennan and then Elizabeth Neale of Tooram, Allansford. William died in 1959 but the stencil was probably used on the property after his death. This collar holder would have been used in the early to mid 20th century in the days when men's shirts often had detachable collars so that the collars could be changed each day and the shirt part would not have to be washed so frequently. The metal crest on the holder with a crown on top suggests that the wearer of the detachable collars could have held a Government office or been a member of one of the Defence Forces. This collar holder has no known local provenance but is kept as a memento of the days (80 to 100 years ago and more) when men wore shirts with detachable collars. This is a rectangular-shaped leather object which has been folded over once to form a wallet with an extra piece at the end to close over the wallet. The top piece closing device has two metal press studs. The insides of the wallet are lined with buff-coloured material hemmed with cotton stitching with two extra pieces folding over to hold the collars. This 20th century business machine was used by the firm of D.H.Wood Motors of 169 Koroit Street Warrnambool. This firm advertised that it sold mainly Peugeot and Studebaker cars and Hillman and Humber cars and commercial trucks. This machine has local provenance as it came from the 20th century business of D.H.Wood Motors. It also has some historical interest as an example of a business or office machine used in the early to mid 20th century before the general use of computers. This is a grey rectangular-shaped metal box with rounded edges. The box has four metal studs on the base to keep the box stable. The box has a hinged section for the insertion of the paper dockets and a turning mechanism for removing the dockets, one at a time from a slot at the top of the machine. The dockets have a white (customer's) copy and a pink duplicate copy for the business to file. Two of the dockets have been removed from the machine to show the contents. The number of dockets in the machine is unknown. The metal surface of the machine is rubbed and rusty and the paper is stained. This coathanger came from the Warrnambool business of Cramond & Dickson. John Cramond and James Dickson established a drapery business in Warrnambool early in the 1850s in Timor Street. They moved to Liebig Street in the 1860s, with new premises in that street erected in 1878. The store had its own tailors and milliners and a large wine cellar. A branch store was opened in London in Poultry Lane and James Dickson managed that store for some years. The business of Cramond and Dickson closed in 1973. This item, although not rare, is of some interest as a memento of the Warrnambool store of Cramond and Dickson, a dominant business in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This medal was awarded at the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association Annual Show to Daniel Hourigan in 1877 for his yearling colt by 'Prince of the Isles'. The formation of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association arose out of a meeting at Woodford in 1853 and the first Show was held in Warrnambool in 1855 on a green bound by Fairy, Henna and Koroit Streets. It was held there until 1875 when it moved to the present Warrnambool Showgrounds in Koroit Street. At the 37th Annual Show in 1890 Warrnambool held its first Grand National Show, a title granted by the Chamber of Agriculture in Victoria. The Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association became known as the Warrnambool Agricultural Show in 1911. Daniel Hourigan was a farmer, road contractor, poundkeeper and auditor who lived in the Tower Hill area in the 19th century. This medal is of considerable interest as it is a memento of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association Annual Show in the 19th century. These scales come from the Nullawarre Post Office and would have been used there for most of the 20th century. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. It was first settled in the late 1860s and 70s and the main agricultural pursuit for the area today is dairying. The first Nullawarre school was opened in 1878 and the Nullawarre Post Office operates today in the Nullawarre General Store. These scales are of interest as a memento of the type of weighing scales used in Post Offices in Victoria in the early to mid 20th century. They include a search made of the title of this property in 1937 and information on later purchasers of the property. The first owner of this property was James Cust who purchased it in April 1853. James Cust (1815-1860) came from Ireland to Australia in 1841. From 1847 on he farmed first at Woodford and then moved into Warrnambool and began land speculating.. In 1856 his property was valued at £20,000 but by 1858 he was declared insolvent following the insolvency of his financial backer, William Bateman and his properties were sold. He died in 1860 following an accident at a Ballarat gold mine. Tooram was established by John Allan when he came to the Allansford area in 1839/1840 with his brother William who established the property of Allandale in the same area. John Allan held the property of Tooram until the early 1860s, with several owners from that date on including John Orlebar, Thomas Palmer and the Owen family. The property was sub-divided in 1897 with the Uebergang family owning Tooram Park from 1912 to 1992. The Torram property was well-known in the late 19th and early 20th century for its cheese production.This bottle is of great interest as one connected with Tooram, a dairying property that was one of the earliest farm properties in the Warrnambool area, being established in the Allansford area in 1839/1840, before the town of Warrnambool was settled.
