The Postmaster-General's Department (P.M.G.) of Australia was created in 1901 with Federation taking control over all six Colonies (States) Postal and Telegraphic services within Australia to form the national Postal and Telegraphic services within Australia. The Department was administered by the Postmaster-General. This manual was produced as a syllabus of training for Army Personnel units in P.M.G's Department schools.In war times the postal organisation was a vital link between the services, the community and overseas centres. The Postmaster-General's Department co-operated with service departments in the installation and operation of radio, telephone and telegraph systems. Its laboratories also designed, developed and manufactured vital defence equipment. This item reflects that contribution and history.A 31 pp buff colored book with orange cloth binding. This framed watercolour was created by 20th-century landscape painter Harold Morse Ward. He was born in Brooklyn New York in 1889 and died in Sacramento, California, in 1973. Ward graduated from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and furthered his studies in Paris. He was a high school art teacher for many years, later establishing the art department at the Sacramento Junior College in 1923. In 1949 he won a Carnegie Grant for further research in fine arts. He wrote and illustrated the book ‘The Thing Called Art’. His subjects were often taken from the Sacramento area.This is the only example of artwork by early-to-mid 20th-century recognised artist H M Ward in our collection. It is representative of the artwork displayed in homes during that era. Harold Morse Ward received a Carnegie Grant for research in art. He was a descendant of the inventor of the telegraph, Samuel Morse.Painting; the timber framed watercolour painting behind glass depicts a cottage on a hill beside a winding creek with trees and bushes. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. They were designed by the Borough surveyor, Sydney Smith. Galvanometers are an instrument used for detecting and measuring electric current. They had a magnetic needle moved by the magnetic field produced by coils carrying the current to be measured, and the earth's field had to be taken into consideration. They were used to detect current in either direction in telegraphy systems, and to test equipment.Post Office Galvonometer.
