The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. The certificate and tie clips were in the possession of Dr John Mainland. Mainland graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After researching and completing his medical degree, Mainland entered into the field of anaesthetics, training at the Royal Women's and Royal Children's Hospitals, later Alfred Hospital, in 1959. He completed training in 1964 and remained at the Alfred Hospital. During his career, he also became the first anaesthetist appointed to the position of Professor in Victoria. His other achievements include manufacturing a respiratory monitoring module that accompanied astronauts on the United States moon landing and developing a stimulator to lessen the risk of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients. Mainland became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1992, retiring from the profession in 1997.The certificate rests beneath a thin layer of glass kept in a light wooden frame. The certificate is cream in colour with dark brown writing. In the middle is an illustration of Box Hill and District Hospital building. At the bottom of the certificate is the signature of the President and Secretory. On the back of the frame there are two metal loops connected by a thin piece of metal wire. Hanging on this wire are two clips from the Alfred Hospital. The face of the clips is consists of the Alfred Hospital emblem in red and gold surrounded by a border of blue with the name of the hospital inscribed. At the time, Dr Davies was the Consultant Anaesthetist St George's Hospital, London and during this event was elected to Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthestists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The Burnell-Jose Visiting Professorship commenced in Adelaide in 1975 in honor of Mary Burnell, the first woman Dean of the Faculty from 1966 to 1967 and the first woman President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists in 1955. Very few women had assumed major anesthesia roles in the world during this period. The Goblet's provenance is supported by an original booklet, which certifies its origin from Chichester Cathedral (1075), Sussex, England. In 1975, a limited edition of 600 goblets were commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Chichester Cathedral, Reverend Walter Hussey, to commemorate the ninth century of the Foundation. This Goblet is number 46 of the edition and the booklet is signed by Walter Hussey. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1). At the time of issue, anaesthesia was a practice still in its infancy. Proficiency in anaesthesia was determined by successful demonstration of a small number of administrations. It was also built into the existing medical qualifications and not a specialty in its own right. Dr Montefiore David Silberberg completed his training at the Melbourne and Children's Hospitals and went to London where he was clinical assistant to Sir James Mackenzie and was associated with Sir Thomas Lewis who did ground-breaking work on digitalis and electrocardiography. When he returned to Melbourne, he brought with him the first electrocardiograph used in medical practice in Australia. He started working in Collins Street and at the Melbourne Hospital as a specialist in heart problems. During World War I, he served in Egypt in 14 Australian General Hospital 1914-16. In 1919 he was appointed physician to outpatients at the Alfred Hospital while also working at the Children's Hospital and at Repatriation General Hospital. He was appointed inpatient physician at the Alfred Hospital in 1925 and, at about the same time, a University of Melbourne Stewart Lecturer in Medicine. The Hall Cherokee II glider is an American design for amateur construction from plans. The designer was Stan Hall (1915-2009), a professional engineer, who gained extensive experience in the United States aviation industry during World War 2 including the programs for military gliders. He continued to work as an engineer for aircraft manufacturers and as a consultant to the industry after the war. He was active in gliding and, in particular, the home built sailplane movement. The Cherokee II was one of about 10 glider designs that he produced: it came out in 1956. It is understood that over 100 Cherokee gliders have been built. In Australia the number is possibly 10 or 11. The Hall Cherokee VH-GVO was built by R.D Meares of Caringbah, New South Wales. The glider was registered as VH-GVO on 11 October 1973 and given serial number “GFA-HB-82” by the Gliding Federation of Australia. The Logbook for VH-GVO appears to be a complete record of the flying history; in aggregate 210 hours 40 minutes in the air from 331 flights. The first test hop occurred on 29 July 1972 at Camden, New South Wales. VH-GVO was last flown on 22 July 1986. Many of the flights recorded are of one or two hours duration. The glider was last inspected and certified as airworthy and in a reasonable condition at the Hunter Valley Gliding Club in July 1986. Since that time, until transferred to the Australian Gliding Museum, the glider was in storage. Structural restoration work has been completed on the fuselage and one wing. The glider is constructed from wood, plywood, fabric and metal fittings, all commercial grade except for main wing fittings, pulleys, cables and bolts. The fuselage is simple with four main longerons and bulkheads with diagonal bracing. The wing has two identical solid spars which form a geodetic structure, hence the leading edge is non-structural. Hilda Charlotte Foster, 1902 - 1990, was a Double Certified Nurse when, at the age of 35, she successfully applied to the board of the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) to work at an outback field centre in South Australia. Born and raised in suburban Melbourne, she had been inspired by stories told to her by other missionaries about the fulfilment to be gained working amongst Aboriginal communities. Given her religious faith and nursing skills, she believed she could make a difference. She worked in Oodnadatta in South Australia for two years (1937-1939), followed by a stint in Innamincka in New South Wales in 1940 -1942. Before she became a nurse, Hilda Foster trained to be a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Sunday School Council of Victoria. She completed first aid courses run through the Presbyterian Deaconesses Institute in Carlton, Victoria, and in 1930 successfully applied to become a trainee nurse at the Austin Hospital for Incurables, in Heidelberg. She commenced her training there in 1931, before moving to the Women's Hospital in 1933. In 1934 she had six months at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, before returning to the Austin, where she was employed when she sat her final exams in November 1934. Her combined skills made her a most attractive option for the Australian Inland Mission.
