These stamps, with three of them used as official Common Seals, belonged to the Warrnambool Co-operative Society Limited and its associate business, the Warrnambool & District Artificial Breeders’ Co-operative Society Limited. This co-operative group of businesses was established in 1960 as the Allansford & District Artificial Breeders’ Co-operative Society to provide herd improvement services to district farmers. In the mid 1970s it had become the Warrnambool Co-operative Society Limited with other associated businesses and had a retail store in Timor Street with other services established in other local buildings. The co-operative gradually expanded until by the late 1990s it had 8000 members, 84 full-time employees and 120 casual employees and, by the 21st century a complex of new buildings in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Co-op, as it was known, closed in 2007. These stamps and Common Seals are mementoes of the Warrnambool & District Co-operative Society Ltd, an important group of businesses in Warrnambool for over 30 years. Many local people were members of this co-operative venture. These are four stamps from the Warrnambool Co-Operative Society Limited and its associated businesses:- 1. Walking or driving up Main Road, you enter Eltham’s Avenue of Honour, with its rows of plane trees, each commemorating the death of a soldier sent to fight in World War 1. 115 trees were first planted on 21st September 1917 beginning at “the flat” to the intersection of Pitt Street. Tree guards and copper name plates were later added. In the ‘20s and ‘30s too many branches were broken off by carriers whipping their horses up the steep slope. In the 1950s many of the original trees were removed for road widening and new plane trees were planted in their place. In June 2015 during the Anzac Centenary, Nillumbik Shire Council dedicated the new Avenue of Honour in the Eltham Gateway. New markers commemorate local soldiers. This early tobacco tin was manufactured in England and imported to the "colony" Australia at the beginning of the 1900s. This manufacturer had won the Gold Medal at the Liverpool International Exhibition in 1884. This tobacco would have therefore been very expensive to purchase making it a must for the wealthier client of the Kiewa Valley. The Golden Flake Cavendish smells of the man of wealth and position. In this era the type of dress and the brand of tobacco smoked showed everyone at first glance where the man using it was on the social ladder and his pecking order. With the demise of tobacco smoking in the early 2000s clothes themselves do not show the pecking order in that quickly visualised manner, as at the time of manufacture of this tobacco tin. In the 21st century the level that men are in the socio economic field is realized on "the social information" available on the internet.This tobacco tin relays a long ago era, when personal contact, and not something that has been written down by some "unknown", was valued as the true appraisal of a member of the community. This was especially relevant in a small regional area such as the Kiewa Valley. Although social networking was not as fast then as the internet provides now, appearances, manners, fashion and etiquette with first impressions high on the order of evaluating someone in the community. Pointer such as the brand of tobacco smoked was part of the rural assessment method. Up until the demise of the Australian Tobacco Industry, circa 2004, the Kiewa Valley and surrounding district was part of a vibrant producer of tobacco leaves. The remnants of this industry still remain today but the drying sheds (for tobacco leaves) are now used to store hay for the valley's dairy and beef cattle industries.A dark metal tobacco tin covered in a bright metallic gold fleck pattern with a black frame on the lid around a drawing of a woodsman with a musket and axe sitting on a stump overlooking a valley that reads "Pioneer Brand", next to a company seal incorporating a wreath, eagle and shield. James Lang opened a shop and bakery in Gallowgate in 1817. His nephew, John Macfarlane, joined the business and took over when James died. A new bread factory was built at Wesleyan Street in Calton in 1880. The firm decided to move into machine-made biscuit manufacturing and opened the Victoria Biscuit Works on an adjoining site in 1886. Expansion to London followed, with the opening of the Imperial Biscuit Works in Fulham in 1903. In 1925 a new Victoria Biscuit Works with modern equipment was opened in Tollcross. Macfarlane Lang joined with other biscuit manufacturers to form United Biscuits in 1948. United Biscuits has since expanded to become one of Britain's leading food suppliers, and the Tollcross factory remains a major employer in Glasgow's East End at the beginning of the 21st century.Lidded biscuit tine decorated with an image of a doll's house on the lid. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.Captain McLeod: Captain McLeod and family kept the Post Office at Newhaven. He also built a boat called old "Trusty" and launched it almost opposite Churchill Island. Unfortunately, at a later date, the "Trusty" was the cause of a tragedy. The bottom of the boat had become so encrusted with marine growth that the owner decided to beach her between the jetties at Griffiths point, now San Remo. Before the job was completed the soring gave way and allowed the boat to tip over on her side, causing Captain McLeod to be crushed to death. Died March 3rd 1880 aged 64 years. Also buried in this grave is his wife Susan - died May 24th 1882 aged 62 years. Their son Andrew McLeod died February 21st 1916 aged 60 - loved husband of Elizabeth E McLeod. A washboard is a tool designed for hand washing clothing. With mechanized cleaning of clothing becoming more common by the end of the 20th century. The traditional washboard is usually constructed with a rectangular wooden frame in which are mounted a series of ridges or corrugations for the clothing to be rubbed upon. For 19th-century washboards, the ridges were often of wood; by the 20th century, ridges of metal were more common. A "fluted" metal washboard was patented in the United States by Stephen Rust in 1833. Zinc washboards were manufactured in the United States from the middle of the 19th century. In the late 20th century and early 21st century, ridges of galvanized steel are most common. Clothes are soaked in hot soapy water in a wash tub or sink, then squeezed and rubbed against the ridged surface of the washboard to force the cleaning fluid through the cloth to carry away dirt. He was born in Yandoit, and was a 24 year old labourer when he enlisted for service at Kingston on 20 April 2015 during World War One. HIs next of kin was his wife Harriett Argent of Kooroocheang, Victoria. He was wounded in Acton at France on 04 July 1914, and had shell shock for the second occasion on 03 August 1916. On 22 August 1916 he embarked on the "Denis" for England suffering from Shell Shock. He was transferred permanently to Base in England on 18 June 1917. He was admitted to hospital with VD on 21 August 1917 (63 days), and sailed for Australia on 30 January 1918 with Neurasthenia. The bank building was used first by the Colonial Bank of Australasia (from 1866 to 1888) and then by the Union Bank (from 1888 to 1942). The two-storey bank building was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The new double-storey building was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. It is now a private residence. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ian Anderson, a long serving Legatee, on 21st May 1987. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Ian Anderson was President in 1964, during which there were 7,000 children in Melbourne Legacy's care and approximately 9,500 widows. Badge Day raised 120,000 pounds. He had also served on the Legacy Co-ordinating Council for many years and was it's president in 1969-1971. Also a death notice and note published in the Bulletin when his wife Gwenda Anderson passed away in 1989 The article was part of an folder about of past presidents that served on the LCC in preparation for the photo board that was produced. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of some Legatees. Many of the poems contained in this book were written by Burns while at school and first appeared in "The Scotch Collegian" which he edited in 1913-1914. Four of his editorials are included. Prose and verse tributes by former schoolmates and fellow soldiers are included, as well as an essay on Burns by the headmaster of Scotch College, W.S. Littlejohn. James Drummond Burns was born in Geelong in 1895. James was the first of eight children born to Hugh and Mary and while he was born at Geelong the family had moved to Bairnsdale by 1905. As Methodist minister, Hugh had accepted the posting to Bairnsdale where the family stayed till about 1913. He died in Gallipoli on September 18 1915. James was a student when he enlisted on 2 February 1915 at Lilydale, Victoria. He served in the 21st Battalion with the rank of Corporal. His Regimental Number was 805. (ref. Scotch College World War I Commemorative Website) This book is a tribute to a WW1 soldier and contains contemporary writing which can be used in research. A thin 32 pp paper back book with a brown cover. On the cover is the title, "In the Dawning of the Day: in Memoriam, J. D. Burns", in black print inside a rectangular red/gold/black line frame.

Embarked for France 22,11,1916, WIA 28.5.1917 SW Face, rejoin unit 19.6.1917, WIA 12.10.1917, rejoin unit 10.5.1918, promoted CPL 3.9.1918, hospital 14.9.1918 Nasal Obstruction, rejoin unit 3.10.1918, promoted Sgt 7.10.1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for actions near Clery on 31.8.18. John William Grinton enlisted in C Coy 38th Batt AIF on 3.2.16 age 23 years. Both became Sergeants and both were WIA twice. They came home together on the same boat. Part of the Grinton collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos taken by Jack during the War. The almanac was produced and updated annually to reflect current information. The Churches of Christ in Australia is a Reformed Restorationist denomination. Congregations in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales were established by individuals who travelled to these colonies to pursue employment opportunities, elsewhere in Australia Churches of Christ congregations were established as missionary initiatives. Churches of Christ in Victoria began with the arrival of the Ingram and Picton families from England who established regular meetings in Prahran and officially constituted a congregation in 1855. In Warrnambool plans were drawn up in 1883 for the erection of a Church of Christ at 12 Spence Street. The church was opened in 1885 with visiting pastors until a resident minister, A. J. Fisher, was appointed in 1915. This church was closed early in the 21st century when a new church, Gateway Church of Christ, was opened in Ragland Parade in Warrnambool. A rare survival of social and spiritual ephemera related to the Christian worship throughout Australia during the late nineteenth century. Murray Comrie Collection. This image depicts the stables at rear of a two-storey bank building in Tarnagulla. The bank building was used first by the Colonial Bank of Australasia (from 1866 to 1888) and then by the Union Bank (from 1888 to 1942). The two-storey bank building was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The new double-storey building was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. It is now a private residence.
