A typed reprint of an article that appeared in The Herald. It is an account of the founding of Somers Camp by Lord Somers. The camp began in 1921 when the Duke of York started a summer camp for boys at Littlestone Aerodrome in England. It was an experiment in bringing together boys from different walks of life to encourage understanding and mutual appreciation of each other. While Lord Somers was Governor of Victoria he started a similar camp here with equal success. Part of the text: "Our aim is to change and improve the mental attitude of the boys to each other — to beget a state of mind in which the two sets merge in each other. As the period of the Camp is short — only one week — every effort is made to give the boys full scope for recreation and play. We do not wish to give them a busman's holiday and saddle them with numerous domestic duties, and so they are free of nearly all these, and can devote the whole of their time to themselves. We wish, too, to give them absolute freedom, with as little hampering discipline as possible, and so long as the simple rules of the Camp, such as punctuality at meals and so on are observed, they can do what they like. The Group Leaders take charge of the organised sports, and as each group is composed of boys from both school and workshop, unity is preserved. Superficial differences in worldly pros perity vanish at the Camp; you can't tell one from t'other; a feeling of comradeship in a common life manifests itself; a spirit of loyalty to each other, and to the ideals behind the camp quickly emerges; artificial barriers tumble down, and we are all one, That, in brief, is the spirit of the Camp. But, of course, that is not the beginning and end of it, for if it were, the benefit would be merely temporary, and the effects would pass off. And so I come to the other and, to my mind, the more important function of the movement which finds expression in what we call the Power House. The Power House is a continuation of the Camp. Every boy who attends the Camp becomes automatically a member of the Power House. The Camp is the Open Sesame to the Power House, and whereas in the Camp the boy has merely enjoyed himself, when he graduates to the Power House he begins to imbibe the spirit of service and to learn that he has responsibilities, both to himself and to others. Blamey House was one of the residences used by Legacy as a home for Junior Legatees. The first few pages of this book explains the history and significance of the name Blamey House. Then it is like an honour roll and has pages to be inscribed with the name of each Junior Legatee that lives in the home plus their fathers name and service. There is a list of approximately 72 children in the book that lived in a Legacy home called Blamey House at some stage. The name Blamey House was transferred to three different homes run by Legacy until 1980. Blamey House was originally the name of a hostel set up in World War 2 for servicemen that needed short term accommodation and food. It was originally situated in Melbourne CBD on the corner of King and Collins Streets in the Robbs Building (since demolished). When the hostel was no longer required after the war, the trustees of Blamey House donated money - almost 20,000 pounds, to Legacy for a children and toddlers' home which was established in Balcombe Road Beaumaris. The condition of donation was that the name Blamey House be used and when the Balcombe Road property was sold in 1956 the name was transferred to Holmbush, another Legacy residence. Mary Ann Craddock married David George Knott (1894-1948) in 1923. He was born at Lockwood. The following from the electoral rolls:- 1. 1925 David and Mary Ann were living at the Olive Branch Hotel in Mitchell Street and both are listed as furriers; 2. In 1931 Mary Ann is living in Eadie St. and David is listed at 121 Wattle Street, again both furriers. 3. 1937 both are living at 123 Wattle St. but Mary Ann is now listed as home duties. 4. 1942 Both are living in Spring Gully Road where David died in 1948 before he is buried at the Bendigo cemetery. NB. Both 121 and 123 Wattle St. are very big homes, possibly boarding houses at the time. In 1923 their shop was situated in the Lansell building on the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves St. It was on the upper floor and all stock was destroyed in a fire. In 1931 the address for their business is listed as Mitchell Street. Earlier in 1915, in the NSW Police Gazette, David was listed as a deserter from the army but no army records have been found. The Holy Trinity Anglican Church in this location was first opened in 1877. An earlier nearby prefabricated Church building known as the 'Iron Church' had served as the Anglican place of worship in Bacchus Marsh from around 1855 until 1877. The 1877 sandstone Church with a slate roof was intended as a permanent structure for Anglican worship in Bacchus Marsh and still stands in 2024 and continues to function as an Anglican Church. The building was designed by Frederick Wyatt and is described as early English Gothic in style. It was opened on 5 June 1877 by Bishop Moorhouse of Melbourne. The Todisco family (Ferdinand, Edvige and son, Joseph) lived in the former Prince Arthur Hotel from around 1958 to 1981. They bought the building in the early 1960s from Mrs SCHUMACHER and ran it as a rooming house with a milk bar on the ground floor. They closed the milk bar in the early 1970s and sold the property in 1981.
