This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.'Yarra Bluffs' was the home of George Henry (1831-1906) and Allegra Charnock Mott (1831-1905), newspaper proprietor (and also a friend of John Inglis, father of Kew doctor, Edgar Inglis, who bought land adjacent to this property in the 1890s). Walter was a son who drowned in the Yarra in a swimming accident January 2, 1890. George & Allegra had fourteen children and the family continued newspaper publishing interests from 1853 until 1986, over four generations.' Gathering of seafarers and LHLG members carrying the Mission flag, at Graylings, property of Frederic Race Godfrey, in St Kilda, on 13 November 1905. Sixty-three men and boys were invited to the picnic. Miss Ethel Godfrey is standing on the right hand side next to another lady, wearing a dark dress and hat. In the article published in the Church and the Sailor in July 1930 after she resigned from her position of Honorary Secretary, this was the first picnic organised by her after Reverend Gurney Goldsmith pleaded for women's help during a sermon at All Saints church in St Kilda the same month. The Ladies Harbour Lights' Guild was formed on 1st October 1906 and she was nominated Honorary Secretary and Treasurer on 4 December 1906. See item 1642This was the official first picnic of the Amalgamated Victorian Seamen's Mission and the first picnic organised by Miss Ethel Godfrey. A year later she was nominated Honorary Secretary of the newly Ladies Harbour Light Guild. Date is approximate; early Empire Day celebrations were held in May each year between 1906 and 1911 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. Headmaster, George Bennett was later headmaster at Balwyn State School, which his son Gordon (later General Gordon Bennett) attended. Miss Amy Wise was a teacher at Surrey Hills State School for her entire career. (There is information in filing cabinet re Amy Wise). Note (undated) from John Reaburn states that an issue of SHNN claimed Major General Bennett was a pupil at SHPS. He stated: "I very much doubt this, as he was 19 years of age when his father was headmaster in 1906. Before that the whole family attended Balwyn State School. Mr Donald "Dosh" McLennan was a well-known Highland piper in the Colac district. He was honorary piper of the Geelong Commun na Feinne and the Colac and Camperdown Caledonian societies. He was born in Balmacara, Rosshire, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. James Bonwick (1817-1906), the Victorian educator and historian, acquired land in Kew on which to establish a home and school in 1853, not 1854 as more commonly stated. Bonwick returned to England in 1859 for a period, later returning to Melbourne and settling in St Kilda. He was the author of a number of histories and an official transcriber of Government records.This newly acquired document, from a former owner of 'Parkhill' (20 Hillcrest Avenue, Kew), is of statewide importance as it is the original copy of the agreement made between Thomas Judd of Parkhill and James Bonwick in 1853 for the purchase of land in Kew. This calendar of early Melbourne scenes was produced in 1938 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the firm in Melbourne. The size, layout and images were a copy of the original calendar produced in 1863. Battista Borsa was from Bellinzona in Ticino, Switzerland. He named his house on the corner of Main road and Seventh St in Hepburn Springs "Bellinzona". His daughters ran the house as a guest house in 1900. This house was burnt down in the 1906 Bushfire. it was rebuilt in Edwardian tradition, and was again burnt down and rebuilt on a much larger footprint. William Morley Johnson established a stock and general auctioneers business in Kyneton in 1886 before opening a furniture store in Bendigo in 1897. The initial business operated from Pall Mall opposite the Post Office and then moved to 23 Mitchell Street in 1898. In 1906 the business moved to Sydney. The Sunday School of the Anglican Church in Warrnambool dates from the 1850s and by 1909 it was an established tradition for most children whose parents belonged to the Anglican Church to attend a Sunday School. In 1906 there were about 30 teachers taking 45 pupils in the morning session and 177 pupils in the afternoon session. The highlights of the year were the Sunday School picnic held at various venues and the annual prizegiving day. In 1909 a cantata, ‘The Fairy Chain’ was performed by Sunday School students in the Oddfellows Hall. The Vicar in 1909 was Archdeacon Peacock (1906-1912) and in 1908 he introduced a Church Stamp System at the Sunday School whereby children were given stamps and pictures for an album to record their attendance and instruction. This book is significant because it is an example of the type of prize given to the prizewinners at the Christ Church Sunday School in Warrnambool in 1909. The prize, a book, has a story that has heavy Christian religious and moral overtones and the English Religious Tract Society produced books especially for the Sunday School prizegiving market. This is a hard cover book of 314 pages pus several pages detailing other books recently published. The book is a children’s book given as a prize by Christ Church Sunday School, Warrnambool in 1909. It has a brown cover with an inset of a sketch of a young woman holding an umbrella and a sea or a lake setting in the background. The colours of the sketch are blue, white and black and the sketch is set in a decorative border. A similar decorative pattern is on the spine of the book. There are several black and white plates in the book relating to the story. The inscription plate inside has both printed material in blue print and handwritten material in black ink.
