This Bible was given in March 1916 to Private Henry Havelock Rogers (1895-1917), the son of Joseph and Ellen Rogers of Warrnambool. He left Australia in April 1916 as a member of the 14th Battalion (17 Reinforcement Group) and died in France in April 1917 as a result of wounds. The cousins named on the card were the three older children of Arthur and Agnes Rogers, also of Warrnambool. Joseph and Arthur Rogers were brothers. The Bible was found in the MacDonald Street, South Warrnambool home of Bill Rogers, another son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers not born until the 1920s (deceased estate item). This item has a particular poignancy as it was given to a Warrnambool World War One soldier who was killed in action. Perhaps he carried the Bible with him and it was returned to his family after his death. This is a brown leather-covered book of 822 pages. The cover extends over the edges of the pages and has gold lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged and there are several colour maps at the end of the book. There is a blue ribbon marker encased in the binding. This field First Aid kit is a mixture of items, some prepared for use in wartime, including World War One and some for use in peace time emergencies. The calico bag, produced by the Red Cross in Kalgoorlie, W.A., has been used by the State Emergency Service and at a later date by a scout group. The name, ‘S. Dempster’ is on the striped calico bag. Samuel Dempster was born in Ireland and was living at Panmure when he enlisted. He was attached to the 6 Ambulance training. He served from 1942-46 This is a calico shoulder bag with the shoulder strap adjustable with the use of metal clips. English currency before decimalisation in the 1970's consisted of pounds, shillings and pence with twelve pennies to the shilling and twenty shillings to the pound.Coins ranged from farthings which were one quarter of a penny through to pennies, threepence, sixpence, shillings ,half crowns and crowns. Most coins had a variety of common names such as a " bob" for a shilling a "quid for a pound and a tanner for a sixpence. This coin is the equivalent of five shillings and is known as a crown. The text around the obverse, "Victoria Dei Gratia 1844". On the reverse the text of Reg Fid Def"Britanniar translates as Queen of Britain and defender of the faith. This book belonged to Pearl McCullagh whose address is given as Oak Grove (the name of the property) inYangery with the name of Illowa S. School under the address. Because of the content of the book it is presumed that the ‘S’ stands for Sabbath or Sunday and the Sunday School may have been a Presbyterian one. Yangery is situated between Woodford and Koroit and Illowa, nearby, is about 8 kilometres from Koroit and about 9 kilometres from Warrnambool. Pearl McCullagh was the daughter of Samuel James and Charlotte Jane McCullagh. She was born in 1906 and married Ernest Keen. This book is of interest because it belonged to an early 20th century resident, Pearl McCullagh who lived at Oak Grove in Yangery. This is a soft cover book of 104 pages. This book contains passages from literature for use in the teaching of Pitman’s shorthand. Isaac Pitman (1813-1897) was an English educator who invented in 1837 the shorthand system named after him. Pitman’s shorthand was the most widely used shorthand system in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century. Pupils studying commercial subjects learned Pitman’s shorthand until it was replaced in the second half of the 20th century in Victorian State schools by Dacomb’s shorthand system. No information has been found on D. Vickers.This book is of interest as an example of the type of shorthand tcxt books used early in the 20th century. This is an earthenware mug made by Ken Sadler in 1997. In 1972 he established the Potters’s Wheel, a pottery business in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and conducted this business for many years. It is presumed that mugs such as this one would be made to order with the requested name added to the side of the mug. This mug is of interest as a memento of the work and business of the Warrnambool potter, Ken Sadler. This is a ceramic mug with a brown and orange glaze. This is a souvenir jug made for the local tourist trade in the 1960s. The jug has an image of Lady Bay, Warrnambool. The official name of Lady Bay is Warrnambool Bay. The jug was made by Westminster Fine China Australia, a firm established in 1954 by the cutlery and silverware firm of Stanley Rogers and Sons of Melbourne. Westminster China was fist established in Cheltenham in Melbourne and after 1977 it was operating in Sandringham, Victoria. It was still operating in the 1990s and produced mainly souvenir and giftware. This jug is retained because it is a good example of the souvenir items offered to local tourists in the 1960s. This is a small white china jug with a gold strip down the handle and a gold rim around the opening and the lip. On the side of the jug is a multi-coloured image of the lower lighthouse and Lady Bay, Warrnambool. This book contains selections of the convict stories written by Price Warung, 1864-1911(real name William Astley). He was a journalist and writer who worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an important association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. In this period he write the powerful works for which he is best known, ‘Convict Days’, a series of four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict system. The major theme of these writings is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved in the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This Convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publishing the ‘Yes’ case for the Federation referendum. In 1883 Astley was in Warrnambool, working as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and examples of his journalism can be found in the papers of this time. He wrote lengthy reports in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This book is of considerable interest as it was written by Price Warung (William Astley). Not only is he of importance in Australia’ history but also he has his place in Warrnambool’s history as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard in the 1880s. This book belonged to Charity Lamerton Phillips and may have belonged to her parents before her. On the inside front cover are the names of George Phillips and Jessie Kerr, giving their marriage date and the birth dates of four of their children. Charity Lamerton Phillips (1872-1942) was the daughter of George and Jessie Phillips of Nirranda and she married Frederick Bonnett and farmed in the Mepunga district. This book is of interest because of its age and because it contains family information on the Phillips family of Nirranda. Many 19th century people recorded family information in a Bible or other old book kept in the home. This is a hard cover book of 325 pages. The cover is brown leather with some sections eroded away. The spine has gold lettering. The book contains several black and white illustrations. Some of the pages are stained and torn at the edges. This is a 1918 Day Book listing some employees/contractors and the day-to-day tasks undertaken by them. There is a separate page for each employee. The book lists such tasks as ‘carting from the Quarry’, ‘tarring Raglan Parade’, ‘tarring at the Gardens’, ‘screening Liebig Street’, ‘working at the Ladies’ Baths’ and ‘general patching’. The names of the employees/contractors include Niven, Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams, Dunne and Gee. The name ‘McKenzie’ on the first page is the only clue to the identity of the employer/overseer and so far his identity has not been established. The jobs listed suggest that he was either an employee of the Warrnambool Council in the Public Works area or a contractor hired to do the same sort of work. This note book is of great interest as it lists workers and the jobs covered by them in 1918 in Warrnambool and it will be of greater significance when the identity of McKenzie is established.This is a note book with ruled blue and red lines. This journal contains the original records of Nurse Thomson’s Private Hospital in Warrnambool. It contains the records of the births at the hospital from 1907 to 1924. The early records give the name of the mother and later ones give the name of the attending doctor. Ellen Thomson (1872-1940), the daughter of Eliza and Charles Trew, conducted a private hospital in Raglan Parade, Warrnambool (the site of the old Tatts Hotel Bottle Shop, next to where McDonalds Food Store is today). This journal is of considerable significance as it is an original one, listing births at a private hospital in Warrnambool from 1907 to 1924. It is the only local original private hospital journal in the collection of Warrnambool and District Historical Society and pre-dates the establishment of a maternity wing at the Warrnambool Hospital.This is a foolscap-size book with a black hard cover and gold printing on the front. It has red binding which is in a somewhat tattered state. The cover is coming away from the binding and some pages are loose. The book has printed red and blue lines and the entries on these pages are handwritten in black ink and pencil. This booklet was given to subscribers of the Warrnambool Standard as an almanac for the year 1875. It was the first of these Standard Almanacs and replaced the yearly diary which was previously printed in the newspaper. These Standard Almanacs were published yearly from 1875 to 1930 and contained information for the residents of Warrnambool and district on the year ahead – the names of local public officials, businesses, hotel keepers, school personnel, local organizations representatives etc. The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was established in 1872 and continues to this day. This booklet is of high significance as it is the first of the yearly Warrnambool Standard Almanacs and contains much valuable information on Warrnambool and district for the year 1875. It is a very valuable research tool for those studying and writing Warrnambool’s history and is a rare copy. This copy appears to have belonged to George Barber, the son of George Barber, a well-known solicitor who opened a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1855. He died in 1879 and it appears that one or more members of his family went to live in the Maryborough area as this copy came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Midlands Historical Society. This is a soft cover booklet of 80 pages plus many advertisements at the front and back. It has a buff-coloured cover with an ornamental border on the front cover and black lettering. The booklet contains a calendar and information on the people, organizations and businesses of Warrnambool and district in 1875. Some of the pages have been burnt at the bottom edges and there are several pages partly or wholly torn away. The pages have been annotated in many places, mostly in pencil but occasionally in ink. The handwriting of the Skilbeck inscription suggests that it is of 19th century origin so the first owner of the book may have been Richard Skilbeck, a pioneer of the Koroit district who was at Yangery Grange farm from 1866 to 1916. The name on the printed label would be that of a Skilbeck descendant. This book is of antiquarian interest and is also kept because of its connection to the Skilbeck families from the Koroit area This is a hard cover book of 357 pages. It has a green cover with black and gold decorative panels and scrolls and gold lettering. The cover is somewhat stained and the spine is a little faded. The book has 33 chapters and advertisements at the back of the book for other books by the same author. There are decorative borders and scrolls at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are several black and white full-page illustrations, all protected by tissue paper. The inscription is handwritten in black ink and a piece of paper containing a printed name and address is affixed to the first page with adhesive tape. This is a poster advertising the sale of the Lyndoch sub-division in Warrnambool with the sale of 200 housing sites. The sale took place about 1958 with the land sold by Frederick Gill, a Warrnambool jeweller. The land was previously owned by George Rolfe who had acquired the land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in the 1880s and named the property ‘Lyndoch’. He bought the surrounding land at a later time. This sub-division came to be known as the Gill Estate. It was a valuable site as many of the allotments fronted the sea and others were adjacent to the Hopkins River. This poster, although tattered, is of interest as it has many details of the Gill Estate sub-division and will be useful to researchers. This is a cream-coloured paper poster with black and red printing. The poster has a small map in a circle shape showing the location of the streets and a larger map section showing the streets and the allotments to be sold. The poster is in two pieces and the edges are torn and, in some sections, missing. This bottle was used by the Warrnambool chemists, Dougall and Easton. Their pharmacy was at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets (102 Liebig Street) and it was established in 1913. In March 1923 they leased the business to Leonard Eason when Mr Easton opened a pharmacy business in East Camberwell in Melbourne. This bottle is of interest as it is one of the few items in our collection that is associated with the early 20th century Warrnambool chemists, Dougall & Easton. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular body with rounded sides, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular top with a glass stopper. The name of the chemist is embossed in an indent on the front of the bottle. The bottle is empty and the inside of the bottle is slightly discoloured. This bottle was used in the pharmacy of Sambell and Son of Warrnambool. John Sambell opened the Hall of Pharmacy in Fairy Street, Warrnambool about 1890, taking over the business previously managed by Edward Griffiths. Sambell was a chemist and dentist with previous business experience in England and Victoria. By 1919 John Sambell’s son, Herbert had joined the business, trading as Sambell and Son (though John Sambell had died in 1906) and the shop was located at 151 Fairy Street. The Sambells then built new shops on the north eastern corner of Koroit and Fairy Streets and occupied the corner position. In the late 1930s Sambells moved to 90 Fairy Street and the business became known as Sambell, Son and Granddaughter, with Herbert, the son, dying in 1943. This bottle is of considerable interest as one of the few items we have associated with the important Sambell family pharmacy business in Warrnambool. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular top. The top is chipped and the inside of the bottle is a little discoloured. The name of the chemist is embossed on the front of the bottle. This bottle was used in the pharmacy of James Barnes in Minyip and Horsham and possibly also in Warrnambool as the bottle was found in this city. Born in England, James Barnes came to Australia in 1873. He was a chemist and veterinary surgeon in Creswick, Minyip and Horsham before coming to Warrnambool about 1926. He purchased the pharmacy of Dougall and Easton at 102 Liebig Street which had been leased to Leonard Eason in the early 1920s. Barnes called this business the Manuka Pharmacy. The chemist he brought in to manage the business, Len Suggett, eventually bought the business. Barnes died in 1939. His son Ralph also had a pharmacy business in Warrnambool in the 1920s. Although this bottle does not have the name ‘Warrnambool’ on it, it is likely that James Barnes used the bottle in his Warrnambool pharmacy. It is, therefore, of considerable interest as it is one of the few pieces of James Barnes’ mementoes found so far. James and Ralph Barnes were prominent chemists in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a round moulded top. There is no stopper and the top has a small chip in the glass. The front of the bottle is embossed with the name of the chemist and the outline of a shield with the chemist’s initials. This plate was probably part of a crockery set used by the Warrnambool Congregational Church for church functions and receptions. The Warrnambool Congregational Church began when two men, Robert Winton and Thomas Nayler, met in 1862 to discuss the possibility of establishing a church of the Independent order. As a result the first Congregational Church was opened in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1864 with William Pentland as the first Minister. Samuel Nettleton was a notable member of the congregation, being the Superintendent of the Sunday School for 60 years. In 1940 the Congregational Church moved to a building in Henna Street and in 1973 the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form what is known today as the Uniting Church. In 1976 the former Congregational Church building in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army. This plate is of interest as a memento of the Warrnambool Congregational Church, an institution that no longer exists under that name. This is a cream-coloured china plate with a gold trim around the outer edges and the name of the church in the centre in a black and white scroll pattern. The gold trim is now almost obliterated. This certificate would have been used in the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. in the 20th century. It is a certificate that, when filled in, would have been given to anyone who had worked for some time as an unapprenticed tradesman’s assistant. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool district, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, china, glassware and hardware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Wangoom, Cudgee, Nullawarre, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. After William Swinton’s death his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling clothing, furnishings and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling hardware, seeds and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This certificate is of minor interest as an example of a form used by businesses such as Swintons Pty Ltd to give to employees leaving the business. The current Swinton business in Timor Street, Warrnambool is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for 152 years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia.This is a sheet of buff-coloured paper with printed black lines and printed headings. These documents relate to the sale of land in Merri Street Warrnambool in 1959 by Swintons Pty Ltd of Warrnambool. The buyer of the land was George O’Grady, a Warrnambool baker. The land sold for £4000 and there was a shed on the land (called the ‘Office’) which George O’Grady indicated he wished to be included in the sale. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. These maps were produced in 1948 and they contain maps of allotments within the city of Warrnambool, including the Central Business District, up to 1948. The details given on each allotment show the allotment and section numbers, the measurement in acres, the name of the original purchaser of the lot and the date of the first sale. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society owns several copies of these maps but these ones are originals.These three maps are of great significance because they give the names of land purchasers in Warrnambool from the date of the first land sales in 1847. They are a most valuable research tool and can be scanned and photocopied etc.These are three sheets of cream paper pasted on to linen. The sheets have black and white printing and map work. Margaret Jukes (nee McWilliams) married Alfred Meredith Jukes in Melbourne in 1853 and they moved to Warrnambool in 1856. She and Alfred had nine children one of whom died in infancy and four who died in young adulthood. Margaret was widowed in 1872, the year of the birth of their youngest child. A report of her funeral service in the Parish Record notes her "aged and much honored life". The hymns chosen "all were in quiet harmony with the remembrance of one whose daily life was an example and who held always a given trust in the over-ruling providence of God". It records the "peaceful closing of a well spent life".The Jukes name is associated with Jukes Street in East Warrnambool, and with the property named "Belvedere" in Ferguson Street, East Warrnambool. William Bateman Snr was born to parents Daniel Bateman and Patience Wilkinson in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in approx. 1794. He married Sarah Smith on 20th November 1815 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. They had four children – Patience (Born abt 1817), Daniel (born abt 1819) William (born abt 1831) & James (born abt 1837)all born in England. William Snr and Sarah Bateman and two sons – William and James - arrived in Australia in approx 1853. They brought with them considerable capital/stock and bought into a business in Warrnambool in William Jnr’s name. Bateman & Co rapidly became the largst mercantile business in the area and did rather extensive business with the Banks of Victoria and Australiasia. It is thought that William Snr assisted in the business to some extent, expecially financially. His other son Daniel (who remained in England) is also thought to have had a financial interest in the business as a dormant partner. The business was so prominent, Bateman & Co issued round copper tokens as a Trade Token - value one penny. These were inscribed with the Business name and were limited in their use to the business. In Sept 1856 the business was transferred to a Mr. Thos W. Sellars (nephew of William Bateman Jnr) and shortly afterwards the store closed with an order for the sequestration of the insolvents estate, but was not made absolute until December 1856 when the Insolvency court ruled for the “compulsory sequestration” of the business due to fraudulent activities within the business. But in the meantime in early November fire completely destroyed the business which left only the insurance payouts. Both William Bateman Snr and William Bateman Jnr are listed on the Pioneers’ Honour Board in the foyer of the Warrnambool Library. It is reported William Bateman Jnr was a trustee of Christ Church, was a City Councillor, and was involved in many other community organisations. He also subscribed towards the cost of building a permanent Church which was opened in 1856. William Bateman Snr died in Warrnambool on 30/03/1868 and his wife Sarah died in August 1868. William Bateman Jnr presented to Christ Church, stained glass windows in memory of his parents William & Sarah Bateman. William Bateman Jnr died in June 1913. Four stained glass windows, three lancet and one circular. The theme of the lancet windows depicts the three occasions when the apostles Peter, James and John were Jesus' sole attendants: The raising of Jairus' daughter. On the Mount of Transfiguration. In the Garden of Gethsemane. The circular window in the gable of the wall represents "The Enthroned Christ".

James Bostock, a grazier, was a member of the Bostock family, prominent Warrnambool pastoralists and businessmen who had come from Tasmania in the mid 1840s and settled in the Warrnambool area. The chemist shop of R.F. Kennedy was established in Warrnambool in 1880 and quickly became one of the leading businesses in the town. Kennedy was a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street (the building still exists) and a prominent community member and a Town Councillor. He died in 1903 but the business continued to use the name of R. F. Kennedy and Co. until 1924. This docket is of some interest as it contains the names of the R.F. Kennedy chemist shop and James Bostock , a prominent Warrnambool resident. This is a cream-coloured docket issued by R.F.Kennedy & Co. to James Bostock in 1908. The printing shows a variety of styles in blue and white and the page has blue printed lines. The famous Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse is printed prominently and the name of Kennedy is contained in an ornamental banner. The sales information is printed in blue type and there is a Kennedy stamp attached to the bottom of the docket and this is slightly overlapping the page. There is a small tear in the stamp and at the top of the docket. ‘Mr Jas.
