Notes relating to Richard Grice (by Harold Curnow, Bendigo.) Notes taken from letter from letters written by Richard Grice from May 1839 to January 1845 - result of examination of the file on the Grice family on May 8, 1968 by courtesy of the Archivist, University of Melbourne Archives. ''Line of enquiry taken by the writer was to ascertain the names of all the people mentioned by Richard Grice especially the names of those people who were with Richard Grice during the years he occupied the vast sheep station in part of which the City of Bendigo developed''. Mention of ''writer's own observations of the sequence of events in the appropriate places'' and ''an important letter written by Martin Maxwell (?unclear), Mar 25, 1843 and located in the State Archives of Vic..'' Provides news about the SEC itself, personal Notes and Anecdotes on many people including clubs and societies. Includes notes on the late Mr. W. Knox, the ESCO Chief Accountant in Ballarat, the Electricity Supply and Tramways Employees Social club, Bendigo, Geelong, sporting clubs and fund raising for the Children's Hospital. Two sheets of ruled paper (blue horizontal lines, red vertical lines - from a financial ledger?) prepared giving a list of Rolling stock operated by the M&MTB in Feb. 1945. Gives class of tram, car numbers, number in service, type, capacity, trucks, wheel and truck centres, motor type and horsepower, tare, controller type, compressor type and length over bumpers and some notes on disposals. Class of cars given are A, C, G, L, T, U, W2, SW2, W3, W4, CW5, W5, SW5, SW6, X, X1, X2, Y and Y1. Note A and G comprise mixture of single truck cars of different classes. Gives car numbers. Sixteen page book or booklet printed on A4 white paper, folded to A5 with saddle bound staples, titled "Ballarat's Tramway Preservation Project". Written by Campbell Duncan for the BTPS c1978, giving details of the history of Ballarat's tramways, and a brief history of Geelong and Bendigo, the formation and operations of the BTPS and the tramcar fleet. Has 10 photographs, 1 sketch of the front of a maximum traction tramcar and a map of the BTPS location on the rear. Map drawn by G. Inglis 2.73. Note no credits for photographs. See image files for photos used in book. Four page (two sheets of A4 - double sided) on gold paper, printed as a Tour Booking form for a tour of Melbourne tram lines, titled "W3 661 Tram tour - Melbourne Revisited" for 27/5/1989. The tram was on loan at the time to "Yappa Tours" from the BTPS. See first and second paragraphs for details of the tram being in Melbourne. Also contained on pages 1 and 2 are notes on W3 class trams, their history and dispersal. Pages 2, 3 and 4 give details of the tour and the booking form. Tour operated by the Rail Tourist Association. Tour booking officer was Geoff Cargeeg. Printed using a typed wax stencil and then duplicated. On rear is a type note (glued on sheet of paper) specifications of the tramcar and car dimensions. Destination City 5th edition gives a view of the tram - 3/4 front on showing the tail light arrangement - p41. Ticket printed on light weight card, in two colours, off white and teal, numbered 7743 available only between the City and Macarthur St. Notes the conditions of use, the time available for which the ticket may be used and where. Ticket has been punched or nipped a number of times. Printed by J.J. Miller, Melbourne. Note Item Not formally Numbered. Image btm2494i2 shows position on page relative to items 2494 to 2504. Certificate contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 8 titled "Public Inoculation Depot / Pneumonic Influenza". Printed form on paper with perforated left hand edge, to record the H.P. James of ESCo had received the two injections for the Spanish Influenza outbreak of 1919. Formed signed by Geo. F. Morton as Acting Town Clerk. Has been stamped that the second injection had been received. The required date for the 2nd injection was 4/2/1919. H.P. James refers to the outbreak in the item on the retirement of Bob Haines (Reg. Item 2529), and notes he was the "Dispenser-Inspector" of two quinine powders to each man and that they had to wear gauze masks. S Note Item Not formally Numbered. Has a strong association with tram crews, possibly inspector (Dave Kellett?) in Ballarat. Prepared by Dave Kallett to undertake follow ups and to assist in the training of crews by checking their knowledge.Black gloss paper covered notebook or address book, titled "Where is it?, use by Dave Kellett? as a note book to record questions for tram drivers, when acting as an inspector. Note book has tabs marked for "A to W". Notebook consists of four sections, sewn into the spine, with glued full page covers. Gold block on top and bottom edges. Last few pages torn out. Each page ruled with blue and red lines at the top. Has a decimal currency conversion table in the front inside cover and a 1967 calendar on the rear inside cover. On bottom of rear cover, stamped, "Made in Japan". Handwritten questions cover various driving and electrical aspects of the trams, both 4 wheelers and bogie trams. Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented.Block with three remaining tickets - light brown ink on off white paper, denomination 3d, over stamped in black "Concession" numbered A 74197 - 99, headed State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Provincial Tramways. Originally a block of 100 tickets been stapled onto a plain cardboard back with a heavy metal staple and a off white coloured cardboard retaining strip at the top of the ticket. The ticket price is in light brown ink while the ticket number itself is in black ink. On rear in light brown ink is a diagonal criss cross or tartan pattern. Yields information about a Australian Electric Traction Association tour to Ballarat, Golden Jubilee Tour, August 1955 and Ballarat tramcars.An 8 page, duplicated souvenir brochure for AETA tour of Ballarat Trams, on 20/8/55 with brief history, itinerary, map, tram car notes. Gives details of the itinerary for the trip using a 280HP Rail car trip with the forward portion via North Geelong. Duplicated using the Gestetner process. Note the knowledge of the time, with horse tram bodies being reused to form some of the early ESCo. trams. Second copy from donation of the Tom Murray Estate added 25-11-2016 and 3rd copy from Keith Kings papers added 19-3-2017. Contains maps, photographs, tramcar roster, drawing of the Melbourne W2, details of the W7's, the St. Kilda Junction project. Also notes other Australian operations including Ballarat and Bendigo. The centre page has an additional duplicated orange page glued into the top of the sheet, from the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria, with a statement concerning the accuracy of the article. Note the map shows the Footscray system. Timetable issued by Osboldstone & Co. (OSBA) - gives a detailed description of the timetable, photographs, reproduces the various pages and gives a short history of the Melbourne Tramways and comments on some of the advertisements. Report - 104 pages, with orange card and plastic covers, bound with a black coloured comb binder titled "Single-ended tram operations - A Feasibility study". Looks at the background for the proposal, operational issues, including loading and unloading, a CBD loop, capital costs, traffic issues, implementation, vehicle design. Report notes it has many advantages and disadvantages, but the concept was supportive that single ended vehicles should be introduced. Report not dated as such, but discusses the ordering of new tramcars in 1977/78, dated c1977. See Also Reg Item 337. On front cover is a post-it notes commenting about report - see image. Handwritten notes on New Chum & Victoria. Winding Engine Pair 22 in cylinders. Two valves to each cylinder (Corliss?). One boiler - steel. 26 ft x 6 ft 6 ins diameter. Reference: T. M. Hooper, Mining Manager, Sth Bellevie United Mine in machinery. Report to His Directors probably 7 /11/1885. On the back with scribble over it, are some notes re Bendigo was making its own winding engines, air compressors and crushing machinery so efficiently that the Senior Inspector of Mines, Mr. E. R. Neekison in a report to the Secretary for Mines in 1884 was emphatic that the best batteries, winding engines and gear have all been made in Sandhurst.
