Allan Thomas Bernaldo (b. 1900, Creswick. d. 1988, Melbourne) was a former student at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School. In 1917 he was presented a medal 'for the most meritorious Art student'. He was known for his watercolours, and subjects such as horses and flowers. Bernaldo's popularity was at its height during the 1930s and 1940s. Brown hard covered book of 59 pages, with a black dustjacket that includes a painting of a vase of white flowers. This is a book of music produced by Allan & Co. English- born George Allan (1826-1897) was a pioneer singing teacher in Melbourne who joined the music warehouse of Wilkie and Webster in 1862 and became the sole proprietor in 1874. By the late 1870s Allan & Co was the largest music warehouse in the Southern Hemisphere. It was bought by Brashs Stores in 1998 and since then it has had a series of other owners operating on a limited scale. Allan & Co. had a music warehouse in Warrnambool later in the 20th century. The supplier of this music item in Warrnambool was Mrs Fanny Rowan (nee Lavery) who had a music store at 143 Liebig Street after 1918. Later, in the 1930s, she had a music and stationery shop in the Oddfellows Hall and, as the owner of the building, also operated the Plaza Cinema in that building. This item is of some interest mainly because it was sold by Mrs Fanny Rowan, a prominent Warrnambool businesswoman in the first half of the 20th century. It is also of interest because it is an example of the music produced by Allan and Co, at one time the largest supplier of music books in Australia. Also Warrnambool had for some time an Allans Music Store at 76 Liebig Street. This is a soft-cover book of 50 pages containing the music of well-known community songs. The pages were stapled but the staples have been removed and there are rust marks and some tearing where the staples were removed. The book has a buff-coloured cover with brown printed material on the back and front covers. The back contains a list of the music titles in another booklet, ‘Primary Melodies’. The front cover has a stamp of the music shop of Mrs Rowan of Liebig street, Warrnambool and there is a brown border of two lines on the front cover. The inside first page has a list of contents. The Country Women's Association of Victoria aimed to improve the health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. This book was one of several independent publications dealing with Australian and Pacific topics. The author, J. Alex. Allan, was a Councillor with the Historical Society of Victoria. The book is less important than the inscription on the first page which indicates that the book was a gift from the staff of Warrnambool High School to William L. Grauer, a teacher who was leaving the school in 1946. Mr Grauer, born in Warrnambool in 1915, became Supervisor of School Forestry in 1968 and served in in the Australian Army and Air Force in World War Two. The Grauers were a prominent early family in the Allansford area and descendants still live today in Allansford and Warrnambool. Warrnambool High School opened in 1907 as the Warrnambool Agricultural High School and merged with Warrnambool North Technical School in 1994 to become Warrnambool College. This book is of interest as it was given as a farewell gift to a member of the Warrnambool High School staff in 1946 and contains the signatures of ten fellow teachers, including the Headmaster, Roy Andrews. The recipient of the book, William Grauer, was a member of a prominent family in the Allansford area.This is a hard- cover book (Social and Economic Sketch of Victorian History) of 172 pages. This book has been used by children of the Giles family at the Wangoom State School. William and Allan Giles were members of the Giles family that lived on the Allansford Road. Wangoom School, no. 645 was opened in 1865 on the Warrnambool/Wangoom Road as Wangoom Common School. It became Wangoom State School after 1872 and is now closed. This book is of interest as an example of the reading books used by children in Victoria late in the 19th century. The book contains stories about England and the British Empire but has no Australian content. The book is also of interest as it was used by children of the Giles family, early settlers in the Warrnambool district. This is a hard cover book of 190 pages. The cover, once blue but now very faded, had embossed lettering and ornamentation on the front cover but these are now almost indecipherable. The book has come apart from the spine and has been re-stitched with white thread. There is much scribble on the first and last pages with the decipherable inscriptions being handwritten in black ink and pencil. There is a blue stamp of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society on the first page. The text has many black and white illustrations with some coloured in by the users. The entire passbook is written in Swedish. It was used between the 31st of December 1945 and the 18th of April, 1946 and seems to record Allan Quinn's wages. This is a school text book used at the Wangoom State School late in the 19th century by members of the Giles family. The Wangoom school was established in1865 as the Wangoom Common School No. 645 and later it became Wangoom State School. It is now closed. Allan and Christina Giles used this book and their home was on the Allansford Road. Christina Giles, the seventh child of Henry and Mary Jane Giles, was born at The Maam, Wangoom. She died in 1899 at the age of seven from heart failure and kidney disease after a three months’ illness.This book is of interest as it is an example of the reading books used in Victorian schools at the end of the 19th century. Royal Readers were introduced into Victorian school in the 1870s to replace the Irish Readers and continued to be used until the 1920s. They have no Australian content. The book is also of interest as it was used by Christina and Allan Giles, members of a family of early settlers in the Warrnambool district.This is a hard cover book of 188 pages. Some pages at the front and back of the book are missing. The cover (once blue?) has embossed lettering and ornamentation but mostly this is now indecipherable. The pages are partly detached from the cover. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. The text contains many illustrations and some of these have been hand-coloured and defaced.
