This linoleum is in-situ in one of the rooms of the house at Days Mill. Newspaper laid underneath indicates the linoleum was laid after September 1910.PATTERNED LINOLEUM : A floor covering made from materials such as solidified linseed oil (linoxyn), pine rosin, ground cork dust, wood flour, and mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate, most commonly on a burlap or canvas backing. This piece has a cream & light grey mosaic type background with circular brown leaf repeating patterns interlaced into four square blue shapes. Central star pattern within circular leaf pattern in light & dark blues & browns. Stylised floral motif in between each circular & square shaped pattern repeats.

This commemorative badge identifying the wearer as a Girl Guide and was used in the 1970's and later. The Girl Guides "World Camps" was founded in 1924 and each subsequent "camp" was in other global countries. The Camp Baree was held in 1947/1948 in Pennsylvania in the USA. In Victoria, Australia, a Barree Regional location for Girl guides, encompasses the Kiewa Valley and its regions. Girl guides in rural areas covered the same developmental programs as in the city areas but the bush settings of annual camps did not have the same impact as for city based guides. The comradeship however, bringing together girls from a widely diverse background, was still a very important objective of the Girl Guide movementThe significance of this badge is that the Girl Guides held a World Camp in the Barree region which included the Kiewa Valley.This world wide attention(Girl Guides) to this region paid special attention to the "home side" girls and highlighted in particular those girls in the Kiewa Valley who participated in the Girl Guide movement. The ability to have such a personal contact with so many girls from so many world regions helped to break the somewhat isolated regional life. The fundamental lessons of the girl guides was and still is to enrich young girls knowledge of skills which provides self esteem, pride in achievements and the togetherness with like minded girls. Social barriers are left behind and good friendships are formed. This photograph depicts Post-Natal care being given by a Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Sister who is working in the RDNS Domiciliary Infant and Maternal Care (DIMC) section of the Service. The photograph is taken in the home of the mother and baby and the Sister is in the process of putting the baby onto the Baby scales to ascertain the babe's weight. Sisters employed in the DIMC section of RDNS gave Post-natal care to both the mother and her newly born babe when they were discharged early from hospital. This photograph was taken in the year following Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS) being granted Royal patronage in 1966 and becoming Royal District Nursing Service. The Sister is wearing the the same grey uniform frock used by MDNS but the badge on her peaked cap has changed from a red Maltese cross to a metal round silver badge with a royal blue circle around the edge with the words 'Royal District Nursing Service' in white capital letters running inside the blue circle.The centre of the badge is divided into three sections; a silver rising sun top and bottom, and a thick royal blue horizontal central strip with 'RDNS' written in large white capital letters. This uniform continued to be worn until 1971 when it changed colour and style. In August 1893 Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), commenced a Midwifery Service with Nurse Fowler, who trained in a Hospital and was qualified in General nursing and Midwifery nursing, being the first Midwife employed. Mothers were assessed for suitability of a home birth, or if they required delivery at the Women’s Hospital. The Midwife worked in conjunction with the Doctors at the Women’s Hospital and if a complication arose the patient was transferred to their care. Following birth they gave Post-Natal care to both the mother and babe. In 1898 the service ceased due to lack of funds but recommenced in 1906, and in the August 1925 Annual Report the number of MDNS home births was recorded at 478. MDNS built the After-Care Home and an Anti-Natal Clinic was opened in 1930. The last Ante-Natal clinic was held there in December 1951 and the MDNS Midwifery service ceased in February 1952. In 1964 MDNS commenced a Post-Natal service with General and Midwifery trained MDNS Sisters working from a room at Footscray Hospital, and visiting early discharged Footscray Hospital maternity cases at home. Now as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), this service was extended to a Domiciliary Infant and Maternal Care, (DIMC) service operating from most Centres and visiting early discharged, often 24 hours after birth, maternity cases from hospitals to give post-natal care to the mother and babe. Many Sisters working in this area had a Certificate in Infant Welfare as well as their General and Midwifery Certificates.In the right rear of this black and white photograph is a Royal District Nursing Service, (RDNS), Sister who is wearing a white gown over her uniform, and wearing her grey peaked hat with the RDNS badge visible, looking down at a baby she is about to weigh. This medal was approved in 1919 for issue to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. This medal gives an insight into the human element of World War 1 ensuring that those who were part of the Orbost community and died while playing a vital role during this time are remembered.A circular silver medal with a bare-headed King George V facing left and GEORGIVS V BRITT:OMN:REX ET IND:IMP: on one side and on the other is a naked St George, on horseback armed with a short sword. It has the dates 1914 and 1918 on either side. A shackle is a U shaped piece of iron closed with a pin across the jaws. It is used for securing anchors to their cables, joining lengths of chain cables and so on. This type of shackle is the same size and shape as an ordinary link of the cable and fits into the snugs of the cable holder when verring or weighing. This Kenter type, chain joining link or shackle would commonly be used with anchor chain in the marine industry for applications such as anchors, moorings and ballast. It is a versatile link that can be opened and closed by removing and re-inserting the taper pin and lead plug, allowing for easy joining and detaching lengths of chain, and for repairing damaged links in chain.This is an example of ship's maritime hardware used in Victoria in the 19500s.Half of a chain joining shackle or joining link, Kenter type , painted blue. Often used as a marine anchor chain link. A complete shackle would comprise an oval shaped loop of thick metal and central metal chock comprises three pieces; two half oval pieces with shaped ends. The Government Gazette of January 18, 1888 advertised the acceptance of a contract of 149 pounds for a "Table for central library, New Law Courts, Melbourne". The table was purchased four years after the Court had moved to the William Street address.The table is not of state significance in its own right, but it is a high quality piece of Australian furniture. Its significance rests on its importance on the overall decorative scheme of the library and the fact that it was designed for this specific space.Blackwood, decagonal (10 sided) table, with 10 carved scroll and griffin supports, moulding and blue leather inserts.

This photograph of the Orbost Municipal Band was taken for the 1937 Back To Orbost celebrations. The band is wearing new uniforms, bought especially for the occasion and for subsequent use. The double-breasted navy jackets have three pairs of silver buttons, three silver stripes on the cuffs and a silver lyre on each lapel. the bandmaster's stripes were gold. The jacket was worn with a white shirt and a bow tie. The caps were navy blue with a silver braided band and a central lyre. There were 29 members at this time. The first Orbost Brass Band was formed in 1889. Around 1908 the town band split and the Orbost Workers' Band was formed. Eventually the two bands merged in 1913 to reform as the Orbost Municipal Band under conductorship of Charles Spink. The band continued for many years but was later disbanded and again reformed. This was to happen a number of times, the last time being in 1961 and continuing through to the late 1970's. Charles Spink made sure each soldier returning home from the 1914 to 1918 war was welcomed home in front of the Shire Hall to the music of the Orbost Municipal Band. The band played in the main street on most Friday nights. The various Orbost bands over the years played a major role in community activities providing entertainment and musical experiences for the many members. RSL Funeral services conducted by the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch and Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch for their departed members. .1) The first entry in the book is 27.10.1965 and the last on 27.12.2008. A large amount of the entries were written by Jack Barnes OAM during his 43 years as Secretary of the Sub Branch. (Refer Cat No 8040). The vast majority of the funerals were conducted by the President at the time, Committee members or members who were heavily involved with the Sub Branch. It's virtual who's who of Presidents, Life members and notables. 1988 saw the most funerals conducted during that year being 60, other figures varied from mid 20's to mid 50's per year. One notable funeral Volunteer was John Balsillie MBE. (Refer Cat No 118.5) Between 2.1.2007 - 27.12.2008 there was 80 funerals with John conducting 78 of them. There is an interesting addition of one funeral by Jack Barnes on 31.1.1968 was that it was (111 degrees). .2) The list on the sheet with a note, "For Cindy" who was the BDRSL Office Person at the time. these were for 2007, there was 19 on the sheet with only 9 in the book, 7 of the names have a red tick beside. Geographically situated on the coast Warrnambool has large tracts of sedimentary rock, some of which is sandstone. It therefore was a readily available material and as a relatively soft stone it was easily quarried and cut. By the 1880’s Warrnambool had been established for around forty years and was proving to be a settlement of some wealth. Hence the trend to build bigger and grander homes. There are numerous other commercial buildings which are built in sandstone and many of the original quarries are still visible around the Warrnambool area. Most of the properties are situated in the central part of Warrnambool. This collection of photographs is a good cross-section of some of the significant homes and buildings of Warrnambool. This is a souvenir of the British Empire Exhibition of 1925. This exhibition, designed to showcase the industrial and natural resources of the countries in the British Empire was on a 216 acre site at Wembley, England. In 1923 the Wembley Stadium was completed and the F.A. Cup Final was held there. In 1924 the Exhibition was opened by King George V in a first ever radio broadcast by a British monarch. There were Palaces of Industry, Engineering, Horticulture and Art and Pavilions housing exhibits from most countries in the British Empire. 17 million people visited in 1923 and there were 11 million visitors in 1925 when the exhibiton was re-developed. Wembley Stadium was reconstructed in 2002. This item has no local provenance but is of some interest because of its connection to the British Empire Exhibition of 1925. It is a good example of the type of souvenir that was bought by visitors to the Exhibition. This is an enamelled metal container, circular (octagonal on the outside edges) in shape with a short handle. The central area is slightly recessed to take a small amount of rouge (a red powder compound for the face, usually the cheeks). A pad to apply the rouge to the face is missing. There is a metal hinged lid with a clip and a small ring at the end of the handle, possibly to contain a chain for it to hang around the neck. Original correspondence from SO Miller to Gladys Holmes, Bakery, Byaduk written from abroad in July 1917. 3117 Pte Stanley Owen Miller was born in London, England. He worked at the McGillivray farm, Byaduk. Enlisted 8th January 1917 and served with the 38th Battio - 7th Reinforcements and embarked on the HMAT A70 Ballarat. Killed on 7th June 1917 at Villiers Bretonneux, France, aged 20. Original correspondence envelope and two page letter written by an Englishman to Gladys Holmes of the Bakery, Byaduk. When working on the McGillivray farm at Byaduk in 1917 he enlisted in the A.I.F. The Rosebrook Cheese and Butter Factory was opened in November 1888 by Messrs Lydiard &T F Rutledge & was a cooperative factory managed by Mr. Goldie. It operated out of the former Rosebrook Flour Mill which was built on the banks of the Moyne River near the Rosebrook bridge in the late 1840s. In 1896 the factory commenced the production of the condensation of milk. The company closed in 1911. The building and machinery were sold in 1917. Rosebrook is situated about 20 kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. This label is of some local significance as the Rosebrook Cheese and Butter factory operated for 30 years Rectangular dark blue and white label featuring text and a trade mark.
