This banner is one of the many awarded in the Western District of Victoria for competitive cycling races from 1932 onwards. The first championships were in 1932, won that year by Bob Scott of Cobden. Notably Russell Mockridge was one of the first to represent the Geelong West Cycling Club and compete in the Western District championships.The Western District Road Racing Championships was significant in being a regional bike racing competition which the Geelong West Cycling Club took part in from 1932 onwards. The two cyclists were taken prisoner in North Africa. The prisoners gave the photo to Colin Odlum and the result was that the photo came back to Australia and given to William (Billy) Bird who loaned the photo to the Cycling Club in Bendigo. James Hartley originally came to Bendigo in 1895 for a cycling race and decided to move there. In 1901 he was joined by his brother William and they began manufacturing bicycles. They expanded into importing motorcycles. James Learmonth Shoosmith (1881-1942) became the manager of Hartley Bros. in 1914. He married Ethel May Rule (1884-1951) in 1908. Geelong Cycling Veterans Club was formed in 1971 but GWCC still conducted veteran races within the club. These medals appear to be remnants of awards not collected. Medals have always been awarded in recognition of achievement in competitive events. Even after 20+ years of veteran racing, the club still conducted veteran races which seems to indicate a large number older members were affiliated with the club.6 x Medals - one in gold metal conglomerate, three in bronze metal conglomerate, two in silver metal conglomerate. The front of the medals depict an olive wreath around the circumference, and has a racing cyclist painted on an enamel disk in the centre. Track cycle won by Jack Phillips 1929 in the Melbourne - Ballarat - Geelong - Melbourne Road Race. This was the first open road race won by a Geelong Amateur Cyclist. The Amateur Cycling Club was formed in 1929. This bike was restored by Ken Dickie who did his apprenticeship in fine line restorations and the painting was by Fred Cook. Hand grips by Harry Clarke. They used photographs from Jack Phillips of the original bike to restore the bike to its original colours and appearance.Track cycle one by Jack Phillips - the first of the big open road races won by an amateur.Restored Malvern Start Road Bike from 1929. Stawell Cycle Club in front of Slattery's Railway Hotel Lower Main Street Stawell 1931 or 1936. Built in Lower Main Street in 1873 opposite Central Pank and the Stawell Athletic Club Rooms. First licensed by W. O Callaghan in 1878. Many others have held this license since. In 1939 it was badly damaged by fire and rebuilt with many improvements. A meeting was held on 18th August 1947 at the East Sunshine Community Hall with the aim of forming a motor cycle club. The name BRAYBROOK MOTOR CYCLE CLUB was decided upon "as it would cater for riders and non-riding members in all surrounding districts". The first President was Don Minahan with Bert Watson as Secretary. They had been members of the Auto Cycle Union whose members became dissatisfied with the prize money awarded, so the Victorian Motorcycle Association (VMCA) was formed. The President of the VMCA (Mr. A. Clarke) attended the meeting on 3rd September 1947 which was held in the Hall behind the Sunshine Theatre. This became the regular meeting place. The new Braybrook Club affiliated with the VMCA joining clubs from Altona, Coburg, Essendon, Newport and Preston. Membership mostly came from recreational motor bike riders looking for more structured competitive riding experience and enjoyment. The club conducted its events on Sunday afternoons and as sport at that time was not permitted on Sundays, they overcame that obstacle by seeking a silver coin donation (pointing out that "two bob" was expected). The events were mainly dirt scrambles over open land which today is known as "off road". The favourite sites were Sunshine's ample open spaces such as Glengala Road and McIntyre Road, as well as Arundell Road (Keilor) and Laverton. For track racing experience the club formed a very basic dirt track on the open land in Glengala Road west of the original Sunshine Golf Club, which was very popular on Sunday afternoons for both riders and spectators. In the early 1950's Motorbike and Sidecar races were also witnessed on some Sundays, on a track near the corner of McIntyre and Furlong Roads, North Sunshine. During 1950 the Braybrook members voted in favour of allowing the Sunshine Club to amalgamate with them and form the BRAYBROOK AND DISTRICT MOTORCYCLE CLUB. The merger took place at the meeting on 10th July 1950 when office bearers were elected. The club disbanded in the mid 1960's due to the massive residential development occurring in the Sunshine district, and so activities were merged with the Newport Club. The above information is mainly compiled from Sunshine Advocate articles published on 29/8/47, 12/9/47, and 30/6/50, and from written details supplied by Mr. J. N. Willaton. Russell Mockridge b1928 d1958 was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. He died during a race in collision with a bus that also claimed the lives of two fellow riders and a spectator. Mockridge started in 1946 by winning his first race of 40km with the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club. His wins soon earned him the nickname of the Geelong Flyer. He represented Australia at the London Olympic Games in 1948 and the Helsinki Games in 1952. He also represented Australia in the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland where he took gold in the 1000 sprint and the 1000m time trial and silver in the 4000m pursuit. In Paris 1952 he won the Amateur Grand Prix and the following day the Open Grand Prix, beating world professional champion Reg Harris. Later that year he won Manchester Wheelers Club Muratti Cup again beating Reg Harris. He turned professional a year later and teamed with Sid Patterson and Roger Arnold to win the Paris 6 day race in 1955. Mockridge was one of 60 of 150 entrants to finish the 1955 Tour de France. He won 12 consecutive Australian championships. Mockridge was married and had a daughter, Melinda (1955)Russell Mockridge was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. The brochure lays out the history of the young organisation, it has 146 members in 1927, and clubs had started in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Sydney. Members were all men who had served in the forces of the British Empire during the war. 'The membership is selected and elected, only one representative being admitted from each occupation. An endeavour is always made to secure a prominent representative of each business, profession or trade, thus extending the influence of Legacy throughout the community.' Meetings were held in the Victoria Coffee Palace at 1pm on Tuesdays and included a half hour lecture. The policy and objectives were laid out including to preserve the memory of fallen comrades and to assist their dependents, particularly the children. Also to maintain a spirit of comradeship, and to safeguard the good standing and interests of ex-service men in the community and to assist the the to secure suitable employment. The brochure shows activities as: Employment Committee, Comradeship Committee, a pledge to assist the National War Memorial being established on the Domain site, and for the children the 'Deceased Soldiers' Children's Welfare Committee. A schedule of Boys' and Girls' Classes is included to show the options for the children. Also picnics, Christmas camp, cycle club, and rambles as arranged. Girls' Physical Training Branch - started in 1927 and now over 120 girls were being instructed by Mrs AM Gilles (the wife of a Legatee). Lending Library of over 400 books. Harry F Cooper, who was the manufacturer of the cycle had a retail business and a factory in Kew. He promoted the Kew Flyer Road Race which was the most important trader-run cycle event in Victoria from 1900 to his retirement in 1936.An unrestored Kew Flyer Women's Roadster ca 1920, donated to the Kew Historical Society by John Wyatt in 2017. Original paint work and logo on the loop frame in navy blue, blue and gold, featuring Egyptian influences in the painted design . The rubber sprung saddle was made by Dunlop and has a serial number on a plate at the rear. The loop frame is original. Most of the cycle, on an initial evaluation following the donation were judged to be original, but with the addition of a later mudguard, reflector and chain guard. A brochure explaining 'A brief account of its ideals and work' in 1930. The notation H4 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. The brochure mentions clubs had started in the Federal and state capitals, and Geelong, Ararat, Ballarat, Fremantle, Ipswich and Bendigo. Members were all men who had served in the forces of the British Empire during the war. It shows the work of Legacy as : Junior Legacy Club - which had been running for 5 years, for sons (aged 9 to 21) of deceased soldiers. Members of the Legacy Club were in constant touch and acted as Big Brothers. Boys' Literary and Debating Branch - approximately 95 boys attended weekly meetings of a debating society at Anzac House. Boys' Physical Training Branch - for the boys physical welfare classes and conducted weekly by a permanent instructor (paid by Legacy). There were 270 boys attending. Also cricket, football, Lacrosse and swimming clubs, all supervised and coached. 'A permanent camp has been erected at Balnarring East, and this is occupied by the boys at the Christmas vacation under the control of Legatee Stan Savige, and the girls at Easter, with Mrs Gilles in charge. The value of these camps in enabling Junior Legatees to become better acquainted and in the development of character and the Legacy spirit cannot be overestimated'. Girls' Physical Training Branch - started in 1927 and now over 200 girls were being instructed by Mrs AM Gilles (the wife of a Legatee). Lending Library of over 600 books. Vocational placements for junior legatees. Meetings were held in the Victoria Palace Hotel, Little Collins St, on Tuesdays and included an informative lecture. The policy and objectives were laid out including to preserve the memory of fallen comrades and to assist their dependents, particularly the children.
