Sketch in pencil and ink on cream paper for an arched stained ...The window in this photograph was commissioned by the Sandringham Yacht Club in conjunction with a Masonic Lodge and work carried out by Gerry Cummins in 1980. In the background is the S.S. 'Kanimbla' built 1935, Belfast for McIlwraith McEacham and was the last large passenger ship built specifically for Australian owners. Designed to carry 400 passengers , she plied her trade around the Southern and Eastern Ports of Australia. In WW2 she was an armed merchant cruiser and served in Indian waters and escorted the 1st convoy out of the Singapore after the Japanese invasion. She later operated in the Pacific after the war and after repatriation duties she was decommissioned and subsequently sold to be renamed 'Oriental Queen' which eventually caught fire and sank. . The small yacht in the foreground refers to the Sandringham YC. In 1987-88, she fulfilled a commission by the Society of designs for a series of embroideries completed by residents during the Australian Bicentennial commemorations.Sydney Joy (Joy) Stewart was born in Melbourne 1925. She studied at Swinburne Technical College Art School from 1941-1945, then the National Gallery Art School 1946-1948. Her career included employment positions as a display artist, designer/painter, gallery assistant, and art teacher. Joy relocated to Cairns in 1981. Solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Cairns, including 'Done By Me' at Cairns Regional Gallery in 1999. Group exhibitions at Cairns Regional Gallery, 'The Fish John West Regrets, 1993' and 'Facets of Life' 1994. Road Canterbury melbourne The pencil sketch from which ...The pencil sketch from which this photo was taken had been hidden from view from 1919 - 1996 when it was located behind a framed photo retrieved from the Surrey Hills Bowling Club at the time of its closure. The sketch had been used as backing when photo framed in 1919. Jocelyn Hall gave the original to great nephew, [name TBC], who was a pharmacist at the Mont Albert tram terminus at the time. Initially the subject's identity was not known. A scribbled name 'Walduck' on a different photo finally resulted in the identification as John Robert Gray, who died 1917. He was engaged at the time of enlistment and after his death his fiancee did not marry. He attended Surrey Hills Primary School and was a salesman at the time of enlistment on 9 May 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 3 October 1916. His AIF papers list his mother as his next of kin, both resident in Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills. He was a gunner in the Howitzer Brigade 120. He was Killed in Action on 21 June 1917 and was buried at Bapaume Australian Cemetery (Row C, Grave NO. 5), France. It is believed that the sketch was made prior to him going overseas to France. John Robert Gray was the eldest son of Emma (nee Beckett) and John Gray. His father John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. John and Emma had a large family: (Gunner) John Robert Gray (1888, Surrey Hills - 21 June 1917, France) Benjamin Walter Gray (1890, Surrey Hills - 1949, Heidelberg) Herbert Harry Gray (1892, Surrey Hills - 1959, Queensland) William Beckett Gray (1897, Surrey Hills - 1899, Surrey Hills) Norman Douglas Gray (1901, Surrey Hills - 1947, Sydney) Evelyn Lizzie Gray (1906, Surrey Hills - 1983) Evelyn married Reginald Roberts and donated a number of photos to the collection. Both the Beckett and the Gray families were important in the early history of Surrey Hills. Over the years (between lapses) I have completed several hundred pieces of work including pencil and crayon sketches, lino cuts, oil colours - and water colours which have been my main focus. As painting has always been a hobby I’ve never bothered with selling my work through an art gallery - but have donated a good deal of work to fundraisers and charity auctions with some paintings attracting large prices, I’ve also sold quite a number (some years ago) via Joels Auctions before they went up-market, others have gone to friends and family. My pleasure has been in completing painting, I’ve never bothered about recovering costs (including framing) but happy when people take an interest in my work - and I know pictures have gone to a happy home – additional pleasure comes when people remind me they love the painting, sometimes I’ve forgotten what they have and other occasions have been able to see them in their homes and loved they way they have fitted-in. Regarding the little painting of the Bicentennial sailing ships – I did it as a quick sketch at the time (1988) when the ships departed Melbourne sailing down Port Phillip Bay - with the view to doing a larger painting which never eventuated and it has remained in my possession until recently when I decided to dispose of my remaining work/s as I have to move and ‘down-size’. As you will appreciate it is a very simple sketch but it captures a notable moment in time and would be very happy if the MTS could find a place for it in their collection. As it happens I spent 9 years in the Royal Australian Navy and feel a close connection to seafarers and would be honoured that you might wish to include the picture in your collection. This is a short study of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, written expressly to coincide with their wedding. It tells some of the stories behind the Royal romance as well as sketching the personalities and characters of the young Royal couple. The book probably belonged to Mary Gilbert, a prominent member of the Orbost community - a teacher and historian who was the first curator of the Orbost Museum. This is the second edition of "Personalities and Stories of Early Orbost which was collected and compiled by Mary Isabelle Gilbert. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert, and had seven sisters and one brother. Four siblings died at a young age. .She was a teacher historian loved and respected by her family and the wider community.This is a useful research tool on the history of Orbost.Two copies of a 141 pp soft covered book titled "Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District". It has a light brown cover and is stapled. On the front cover below the title is a sketch of the Orbost Bean Factory in dark brown print. It contains personal reminiscences of early Orbost. This book belonged to Alice Mathieson. The Mathieson families were early settlers in the Woodford and Purnim areas as shopkeepers and farmers (1850s and 1860s). Peter Mathieson was a holder of land in the Nullawarre area in the 1880s. Alice Mathieson would probably be a member of this Nullawarre Mathieson family. No other information has been found about her. This book is of minor interest as an example of a 1920s attractively-illustrated book on an area in Scotland. It is also of interest as it belonged to a Nullawarre resident in the 1920s. This is a hard cover book of 68 pages. The cover has a grey background and a colour sketch of a house by the seashore on the front cover and black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. The book has twelve full page colour sketches scattered throughout the text. The cover and pages are somewhat stained and the spine is torn away at the bottom edge. This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School Readers (Eighth Book) issued by the Education Department of Victoria. These readers were first published in 1928 and became standard texts for all school children up to Year Eight. They complemented the School Paper which had been published monthly for different year levels since the end of the 19th century. Both the Readers and the School Papers were in widespread use until the late 1940s and the early 1950s. William McCullagh and his wife Margaret had the property Oak Grove at Yangery at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century. Yangery is an agricultural area situated between Woodford and Koroit. There is a record of Silvie Jean McCullagh (parents – William and Margaret) born in 1914 and this is probably the person who owned and used this reader. This book is of interest not only because it is a first edition copy of one of the well-known Victorian School Readers but also because it was connected to the McCullagh family of Oak Grove, Yangery. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. The cover was originally a burnished brown colour but the book has been covered with a mottled patterned cloth material (red, green and brown). The cover is partly torn off at the bottom of the spine. The book has poetry and prose extracts and includes many black and white sketches, maps, photographs and illustrations. This book belonged to Evan Jones, a plasterer and stone mason from Warrnambool (born 1865). He and the Rev. Norman Crawford, the Curate at Christ Church, Warrnambool, began the first Boy Scout group in Warrnambool, the 1st Warrnambool Troop. When Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout movement, visited Melbourne he presented Evan Jones with his scouting medal. The Boy Scout movement has been active in Warrnambool for over 100 years and currently there are two troops operating in the city - Warrnambool Tooram Scouts and Warrnambool Norfolk Scouts Evan Jones was also a Sergeant in the Warrnambool Garrison Artillery (a Volunteer Corps) and this partly explains his ownership of this book and his interest in military scouting. This book is of minor interest as an example of the type of book available early in the 20th century on military scouting. It is also of interest as a book belonging to Evan Jones, the co-founder of the Boy Scout movement in Warrnambool. This is a small book with a buff-coloured cardboard cover. It has red lettering on the front cover which is partly torn away at the right bottom edge. Many of the pages are also stained and torn away at the edges. The text includes sections on military patrolling in general and a section describing military patrols in the Boer War. There are several lift-out pages of sketches of patrols. This booklet was given to subscribers to the Warrnambool Standard newspaper as an almanac for the year 1891. These Standard Almanacs were produced from 1875 to 1930. They contain much local information on Warrnambool and district about the businesses, government officials, harbour management, churches, banks, schools, societies and organizations etc. The Warrnambool Standard was established in 1872 and continues to this day. This booklet is of high significance as it contains much information about Warrnambool and district for the year 1891. It is an important resource tool for those studying and writing the history of Warrnambool and district. The name ‘Barber’ is on the front cover of this booklet and this appears to refer to George Barber, the son of George Barber, a well-known solicitor who opened a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1855. He died in 1879 and it appears a member or members of his family went to live in the Maryborough district as this booklet came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Midlands Historical Society. This is a soft cover booklet of 135 pages, plus pages at the back containing a gardener’s almanac and advertisements. The cover is pale green with black lettering and a decorative black and white border. The cover is a little frayed at the edges and the spine cover is partly torn away. The booklet contains a fold-out sheet with a map of Victorian railway routes and many sketches and illustrations. Students attended Sunday School classes at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. The Presbyterian Church will be 125 years old in 2015.Historical: Religious Education: This book was used by teachers who took classes at the Sunday School at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church. The Tawonga School was a weatherboard building built on 8 acres of land catering for children from the surrounding grazing farms to ride their horses to school. It opened on 27th July 1880. The original school building and records were erased by fire in 1900. The Tawonga hall was used until 1910 when 3 acres of land was donated by Frank Cooper. It still operates today (2015) with its numbers having fluctuated over the years with the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, tobacco farming and now tourism. The Tawonga community published a cook book to celebrate the school's centenary.This book may have also been used as a fund raiser.The Tawonga school celebrated its centenary with a cookbook with contributions from the community. This indicates that the school was very proud of reaching its centenary and the community co-operated with each other to develop this book.This book is a good source of the names of people who lived in Tawonga in 1980.Yellow book with brown writing and sketch of school held together with brown hard plastic binding. This is a piece of music composed by Idabelle Firestone (1875-1954), an American composer and songwriter. She was born in Michigan and wrote many popular songs including, ‘Melody of Love’, ‘Bluebirds’ and ‘You are the Song in my Heart’. She was married to Harvey Firestone of the Firestone Tyre Company. This company sponsored the long-running radio and T.V. program called ‘The Voice of Firestone’ which had a 46 piece orchestra and aired classical and popular songs of the day. Richard Crooks (1900-1972), who sang and recorded this song, was a well-known American tenor who specialized in French and Italian opera and was associated with the New York Metropolitan Opera Company for many years. He was the host of ‘The Voice of Firestone’ from 1928 to 1945 and sang patriotic songs and popular hits etc. This copy of ‘In My Garden’ was sold at the shop of Miss H. M. Lindsay of 101 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. This shop is known to have operated in the late 1920s up to 1935 and was at first (in the 1920s) located at 180 Timor Street. This item is of some significance as an example of the type of music popular in the 1930s and an example of the work of Idabelle Firestone. It also has local significance as it was sold by a Warrnambool music store. This is a four page piece of music printed on seven sides (cover and five pages of music). The pages are cream-coloured, discoloured in places, with black printed musical notation and a back page printed in black containing advertisements for three other songs. The front cover has a sepia sketch of a woman (19th century or olde-worlde style) carrying a bunch of flowers and looking over a garden with an archway. There is a stamp (H. M.
