This MEZON brand button accordion was made specifically for Lyons, Musical Instrument Importer, 207 Bourke Street Melbourne, as can be seen on the embossed lettering on the top of the accordion. The hand inscribed nameplate indicates that the owner was T H Betts. On August 19th, 1903, Michael Edward Lyons applied to the Trade Mark’s Office of Sydney for registration of “The Invented word “MEZON” to be applied to musical instruments. In 1908 he was advertising himself as sole agents for MEZON accordions. He had been at that address for 15 years (since 1893) and was moving to larger premises at 256 Bourke Street, Melbourne. Still at this address in 1925, Lyons advertises MEZON accordions as “The ideal Xmas present, Maker your friends happy, This Xmas let the Present be a MEZON”. There was a choice of three styles: The Organ, The Wonder and The Grand Organ. They came with a Fibre Case with Lock and Key and a Leather Handle. The promise was “They Give Satisfaction”. They were obtainable at all stores or from Sole Distributors in Australia. In 1927 the MEZON was sold by Albert & Sons in Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland as well as by Lyons in Melbourne. The favoured German accordion brands were Monarch and Sterling, which were made by the International Accordion Company in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. The company was founded in 1871 by Ernest Deines and made a variety of musical instruments. The company closed business in 1834. The International Accordion Company’s accordion range made the International brand and others such as MEZON, Globe, and Dienst. Australia imported the MEZON brand. American companies imported a range of the popular German branded accordions until World War II, when they were no longer available. In general, accordions produced after the war were not as high a quality and not loud enough to be heard over the electronic guitars and the drum kit of the bands. This accordion represents the type of musical instruments used in the late 19h and early 20th century, locally and Australia wide. In colonial Australia musical instruments like this one were imported from Germany as well as other countries. At that time, German made instruments represented good quality. This accordion is significant for being especially imported into Australia by a Melbourne retailer. Music was a part of family and social life, associated with dances, song and general fun.Button accordion with case. Accordion with steel reeds, three bass valves and ten treble valves. It is coloured black with very dark green trim, decorative silver metal reinforcing on main corners, gold reinforcing on corners of the bellows and delicate printed, gold printed patterned trims. Hand support for buttons is made of fabric. Folds of the bellows are light coloured with fine dark pattern. It has a nameplate on the front. Black wooden case has red lining, two brass hinges, two brass hook and eye catches and a swivel brass lock. The base of the case has a loose brass fitting. The top has a thin metal handle. Inscription on hand inscribed name on front, label inside case lid, silver reinforcing, leather on bellows top, and frame of accordion. Mabel nee Abraham Rogers produced, wrote and acted for the “ Melton Amateurs” theatrical group established in 1950. The group performed Revues, Pantomimes, one and three act plays, Musical Comedy and Melodramas. In 1960 it lapsed for a time and from 1967 onwards more shows were successfully produced by Mabel. A creative producer and writer, audiences at the Melton Mechanics Institute enjoyed the performances of Gilbert and Sullivan and excerpts from the many Musicals of the era. She skillfully wrote scripts interweaving with songs and topical local dialogue successfully drawing out the talents of all the cast members. About “Melton Amateurs” and forerunners….. Melton people have always been Active in giving and enjoying Concerts and Amateur Theatricals presented by local talent. Wile is it not possible to mention everybody; names like George Gardiner, Stan Hardy, Jim Murchison, Rita Summers, Annie Riddell, Ethel MacPherson, Harold Bainbridge, Jack Mcguire, Greta Jongebloed, Mary Coburn, Elsie McCorkell, Linda Cameron, Marjorie Myers, Aggie Ross, Bob Butler, bring happy memories to older residents. Over the years, the names change, but the talent is always there, and freely used to give pleasure to others. the Caledonian Society was active about 1925. Information provided to the Bendigo Historical Society by Rohan Moresi: Rohan 'grew up on a farm near Buckrabanyule. The bat belonged to Rohan and his brothers, Grant and Alistair. At the age of twelve in early December of 1977, my father took my brothers and myself to the Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo to watch a match of the newly created World Series Cricket being played. West Indies versus World XI. OI took the one cricket bat we owned and a market pen, along with me. During the course of the match I gathered all the signatures I could from players as they left the field after batting, as they sat in the stands waiting for their turn to bat, and when they were fielding close to the boundary. I remember Clive Lloyd, who was sitting in the stands when I approached him, expressing some good natured scepticism that the signatures would remain permanently on the bat as he was signing it, due to the tyupe of marker pen used. I also recall Tony Greig not stopping to sign it as he left the field after batting. I'm sure he had other more pressing issues on his mind at the time. When we returned home my father painted a type of a lacquer over each of the signatures in an attempt to ensure some sort of permanency. As it was the only cricket bat my brothers and I had, we continued to use it in our backyard games. Which goes a long way in explaining its current state. My brothers and I all left the farm in the early 1980's and I took the cricket bat with me. Since then it has remained in my possession up until now. I'm very happy to see it returned to the place of its origin, and for it to be kept in perpetuity at the Bendigo Hisgtorical Society, as it is part of the twentieth century history of Bendigo. In 1961 the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee determined that there should be only one approved Ski School in the Tourist Area. The franchise for 1961 was granted to Alpine Developments Pty. Ltd', which also had the franchise for Tow Bar operations. The Ski School headquarters were based at the canteen adjacent to the T-Bar drive station. The Management Committee also determined that "No person shall be permitted to give instruction in skiing for any money or material consideration without the prior approval of the Management Committee". The Alpine Developments franchise was extended for the 1963, 1964 & 1965 seasons. In August 1964, the Committee declared that it was satisfied with the present Ski School operated by Alpine Developments, and is most anxious to retain it at Fells Creek. They declared that they were particularly happy with the standard of teaching and control achieved by the School director, Mr. Siegfried Haberzettl, who was at the resort for his fifth year, and to whose leadership and direction the success of the School was largely due. The Committee therefore arranged to extend the franchise for a further three years after 1965, and thereafter the franchise was to be continuous on twelve months' notice of termination from either party. In the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Ski Instructors were Austrian. Lorna Clarke was one of the first Australians to gain the highest Austrian qualification, the Staatlicher Bundessportheim. She was employed at the Falls Creek Ski School in 1964. In the 1980s there was a push for more Instructor training to take place in Australia to enable local instructors to gain higher qualifications without having to travel to Europe. During this period, George Pirmoser and later Brad Spalding were Ski School Directors and Bridgford was the still the owner of Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. continued to push for training of Australian instructors. Brad Spalding took over as Ski School Director in 1986 and along with his partner, Melissa Landregger developed a wide range of programs including children’s and women’s programs, private lessons and multi-day clinics for which Falls Creek Ski School is renowned until the present.This image is significant because it depicts some of the early instructors at Falls Creek Ski School.A coloured photo of a group of instructors at Falls Creek Ski School. These booklets were issued in 1944 to 1948 by the Warrnambool Progress and Tourist Association(established in 1927). Warrnambool was the winner of the Sun News Pictorial Quest in 1928, the ‘Ideal City’ and used this title to promote the city. There had been several Tourist Associations in Warrnambool prior to 1927 and all of them promoted Warrnambool as a health resort and an ideal holiday destination with the Sea Baths in Gilles Street and the beach close by. These guides were produced during and immediately post World War Two with rationing of petrol and other goods and most people in Victoria would not have been contemplating long and expensive holidays so Warrnambool with its rail service and beach facilities would have been seen as a possible holiday destination. The booklets contain information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district, black and white photographs of buildings, events and scenic spots and advertisements for local businesses. Many of the advertisements also contain photographs of business premises.These booklets are of interest as they contain photographs of Warrnambool in the mid to late 1940's and advertisements for many business operating at that time.[.1] 56 page booklet. The Ruyton Reporter (formerly known as Ruyton Reports) captures the essential Ruyton Girls' School experience for the broader school community. It has been produced since 1986.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. The Portland Social Amusement Club was founded in 1897. Taken from Trove. Portland Guardian Monday May 26 1913: Portland Social Amusement Club. The members of the above Club celebrated the 16th anniversary of its foundation on Tuesday evening last, when the usual banquet. and social gathering was held. During the afternoon, a numerous band of the lady members attended at the, Free Library Hall and made the necessary arrangements, so that on arrival at the scene at 8 p.m. those attending were very pleasurably surprised to find most taste fully decorated tables actually groaning with the weight of all those good things which appeal so strongly, it is said, to the average man, and perhaps we may also add, woman also. At any rate, he would indeed be hard to please, who was not fully satisfied with all that was placed before him on that eventful evening. The attendance this year overtopped that of previous years, as over 80 ladies and gentlemen took part in what must be considered as one of the most successful of the many 'successful gatherings that have taken place. This 16th anniversary was the 431st ordinary gathering that had occurred, and, as the President (Mr. F. A.Row) justly said, it would appear that the Club, which many years ago was given but six months live, had proved the falsity of the attempted prophecy. After the principal business of the gathering had been transacted, the usual Club dinner speeches were made. The President gave "The King," which after being duly honored, was followed by the principal toast of the evening, "The day we celebrate." To Mr D. McDonald the toast of the Absent and Foundation members was entrusted, and as usual, that veteran discharged his duty well. II i cferred to the fact that of the 34 foundation members who started the Club in 1897,only five were present that evening. Mr W. T. Bennett, as one of the five referred to, responded, and hoped that in the glorious future that appeared before Portland, the Club, which had been started in the days of its adversity, would flourish in a like manner. Mr Grant proposed the toast of "Our Visitors." and in the name of the Club welcomed them to this the most important gathering of the year. Mr J. R. Woods responded in his usual happy way, and acknowledged that, until he had been the Club's guest during the years of his mayoralty of the town, he had no idea that it had enrolled among its members the number of ladies and gentlemen that it had or that its functions were upon the scale that he had since found to be the case. Mr G. H. .ennett upheld the claims of the ladies, especially those belonging to the Club. He evidently spoke with much feeling, and. waxed more than usually poetical in his eulogy of the graces and skill of the gentler sex. He rather upset the equilibrium of three of the younger portion of the gentlemen present by asking them to respond, but they all managed to "upstand" and make their acknowledgments. Mr T. F. Cruse was particularly happy in proposing the toast of. "The President and Members of Committee," who, he claimed, had done so much towards the success of the Club, and were deserving of the best that the members could give. Mr T. E. C. Henry, upon the invitation of the .President, responded,-end pointed out that [whilst it might appear that the work of the committee was light, it was not so in reality, as any member who desired a seat upon the Board would soon find out after.his or her election. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought this portion of the entertainment to a close. In the dance which followed, some opportunity to view the ladies' dresses was afforded, and it could then be easily seen that the anniversary gathering of the Club was considered by the lady members at least, if not .by others, to be important enough to demand special treatment in the matter of dress. Many elaborate and beautiful costumes graced the scene, and everyone appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The function was kept going merrily until about 2 a.m.; when the break up occurred. During the gathering telegrams of con gratulation were received from Mr W. B. Shevill and also from Mr Jno. Homers, both old members, the former a foundation one. Captain Frank Herbert King was born in the Parish of St. Saviors in the borough of Brougham London March 5th 1875. He was educated in theology at St. Augustine's College Durban University. He went on to serve for 2 1/2 years in South Africa during the Boer Wars and then re-enlisted in the A.I.F.16th November 1916 when he listed his address as "The Vicarage Sunshine Victoria" and listed his wife as "Kathleen King" “Revd McCoy announced his intention of moving to the parish of Deniliquin in October 1915. He was replaced by F.H. King. Though the parish could not house him, he came in November. King was a typical “new broom”. In January 1916, at his instigation, the parish agreed to change its hymn book to Ancient and Modern. This decision could be viewed as a “churchmanship” matter, one of many that happened in these years. He pushed through the building of the vicarage, from tender in January to blessed and occupied by June. At the Annual General Meeting, King described 1915 as a trying time in the church and looked forward to a happier and more prosperous time during 1916. At a special vestry meeting, 3 November 1916, King announced that he had accepted an appointment by the Archbishop for service at the front, and that he had been instructed to prepare to go abroad. It was decided in his absence the parish use lay-readers, with periodic visits by clergy for Holy Communion. On 12 November, King thanked the parish for their loyalty and their devotion to him and the church. In return the parish presented him with a wrist watch. The parish was not formally vacant; just without a vicar. In September 1917, the Archbishop wrote advising that King had resigned. He appointed the Rev. W. Green to the parish, but Green declined.”(1) He was sent to Egypt where he administered to the Australian Stationary Hospital Australian 3rd and 5th light horse brigades. His Army record states he was Invalided and Completion of Duty 12 July 1918. He was later awarded th Order of the British Empire (OBE) 1 “The Junction” a history of St Mark’s Sunshine The picture of Chaplain-Captain F.H. King was carried in the Bible of Sig. H. C. Roussac ( a Gallipoli veteran) during his service with the A.I.F. in France. It can only be assumed that F.H.King had a profound effect on Sig. The late Mr. Nink has lived in the district practically all his life and died at the home formerly occupied by his father; Some years ago he conducted a peach orchard, which was one of the sights of Queenstown. He was recently engaged in mining at One Tree Hill with Mr. Otto Muller. He took an active part in public affairs, and was a trustee of the mechanics' institute, recreation ground and cemetery trust. He had a happy disposition, was very hospitable and always merry, which made for him friends all over the district. He leaves a wife, and was the father of Alice (Mrs. Christian), Charles, Robert, William and Minnie (deceased); and the brother of Joseph: (deceased), Henry, Johanna (Mrs. Tonge), Frederick, Mary (Mrs. Antonie) and Robert. His relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The remains of deceased yere interred in Smith's Gully cemetery on Wednesday, and his popularity was shown by the large cortege, amongst the mourners being ex-Cr. Zerbe !(Doncaster), Messrs. Carlyle. Exton, Harris (Kinglake), Birch (Christmas Hills), P. J. McMahon (shire secretary), Crs. Hewitt and Ryan (North Riding), and Cr. D. Murphy (Whittlesea shire). The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Father Lande (Diamond Creek), and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. This pair of milk bottles, produced for the Model Dairy in Cotham Road, Kew, were donated by Vik Sabaliauskas. They belonged to his father who worked at Model Dairy in the 1950s and 1960s. Vik wrote about his father: "As for my father, his whole life story is interesting. He was part of the big immigration program after WW2. He was a displaced person in Germany like lots of others who came out looking for a new life. Our family name is actually SABALIAUSKAS which is of Lithuanian descent. My Dad was also named Vik (Viktoras). He was known as Big Vik and I was little Vik. He arrived in Australia in 1947 and then did his 2 years of work organised by the Government and then he came to Melbourne. We lived in Tyler St Preston and he rode his pushbike to and from Kew every working day for years. In my estimation that was about 13 kms for about 6 or 7 years. Imagine that happening today. Freezing Winter mornings and hot Summer afternoons. His English was poor but he had a great work ethic like all European immigrants. His duties related to maintaining and operating all the machines. One story that he told me about was that after I was born (in 1959) he made friends with one of the drivers who delivered milk to the dairy. He asked him to get a container of milk from the farmer everyday which was just for me. I remember going to the Model Dairy Family Christmas parties which were always well patronised. I also remember visiting him in the PANCH Hospital (Bell Street Preston) where he was treated for kidney stones caused by drinking very creamy milk. He wasn't happy when he was told by the doctor to cut back on milk. My Dad was one month short of his 95th birthday when he died and he lived a pretty healthy life." (2019)Kew was a major milk producing district in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, with three major dairy farms lining the Yarra between Studley Park in the west and Burke Road in the east. In addition to these dairy producers, there were also a number of accredited dairy retailers in the suburb. The largest and most enduring of these was the Model Dairy founded by the Kew pioneer James Venn Morgan. Milk bottles that include the name of the producer or retailer are historically significant as they represent a period in Kew's history before the mass production of milk in the second half of the Twentieth Century. A number of these named bottles have the additional attribute of rarity.Pair of plastic milk bottles, designated on the front as to be used in the refigerator on on picnics. One bottle has a red screw on lid and the other a green lid. The bottles are semi-transparent. [The record also includes a photograph of Vic Sabaliauskas, provided by his son. Bennie Simcox first came to the Monbulk area about 1860, following the first important gold discovery at the end of 1858. As the gold rush was short lived Simcox returned to Collingwood but later came back to Monbulk, built himself a hut to live in and become its first known permanent resident. The hut was burnt in the 1913 fires. Monbulk was thrown open to selection in 1894, and that's when the first farmers including Bennie Simcox went into Monbulk. It was a big, timbered country in those days. Once Ben had cleared some of his land he started to grow raspberries on it. He would be up before daylight ready to start picking. Ben also picked for a local family, the Camms to help make ends meet. When Ben Simcox was virtually at the retired stage, he wanted to develop his bit of the gully as a tourist attraction, As his nephew Fred Gay who owned the 10 acres below Ben wanted to farm, he was happy to swap his treed block with Ben. At a time when most settlers were clearing their properties, Ben Simcox, by contrast, cultivated the native plants and planted most of the large trees seen on the property today. And so Nathania Springs was developed as a tourist resort, and a mini-botanical garden. He diverted the natural water supply to form ornamental garden pools stocked with trout and tame native black fish. There were many visitors came to the Dandenongs, Some arriving in motor cars others in converted furniture vans lined with seats or charabancs with the long extended chassis and the open canvas roofs. Identities such as Billy Hughes, Madame Melba would often come to look through Nathania Springs. Bennie sold Nathania Springs to Councillor Ferdinand Thomas Le Juge, a boarding house proprietor and later the town baker in 1909 then in about 1921 Ben’s nephew Fred and his wife and family continued to open Nathania Springs to the public. It was not unusual in around 1924-25 for up to a thousand people a day to arrive at Nathania Springs to go through the gardens. At sixpence a time, that was a lot of money in those days. This photo is part of a collection of historic and social significance of the early settlement of Monbulk. Mary nee Barrie Robinson (1907 –1999) writes c1980 about her father Charles Ernest Barrie of Darlingsford Melton (1871 – 1931) Extract copied from her handwritten story - My father was born in Ballarat in 1871. … commenced his working life with a team of bullocks and a chaffcutter in the St Arnaud district, a work the he became most success at and would continue in to the end of his life. He eventually became the owner of a chaff mill at Melton station with an access line to the railway. [1900] The Schutt & Barrie partnership Dad later became involved in a Chaff mill at West Footscray run by John Ralph Schutt who when he met Dad was a very sick man and had begged Dad to come into the business and help him. That began a very happy association, the business was put on its feet. An empty quarry across Geelong Road opposite the mill was purchased, the chaffcutters were set up in the quarry and that was the start of a very busy and prosperous period. A branch line was run into the mill. Dad spent some afternoons at the mill going by train, and spending some hours there at night, at the same time running the farm with full time help. Two full 8 horse teams were used to work the land, which meant early rising for the horses to be fed and harnessed ready for the men to commence the days work. Charlie Lowe and Murdock Davey were two of the men who worked for Dad in those years. The firm purchased a mill at Parwan and Dad spent a lot of time and energy getting it running to their satisfaction. Monday was the day he spent time there also round the district of Parwan and Balliang. He came to know many of the their names were well known in our household for many years. [1920] Later a flour mill was built beside the Chaff mill at West Footscray but it never thrived like the mill. The chaff mill had many loyal and good men employed there and there was never any trouble between men and management. Willie Walters and Miss Renyolds were some I remember, other names me, Joyce would be able to name them. Poem written in 1950s.There is a lift to the old boys step tonight, and is feeling young and gay his eyes are bright and his heart is light, and his thoughts are far away. Back in his dear old Castlemaine, or out in the hills around living the days of his youth again feeling his pulses bound. For he's just answered the call that comes to the loyal hearts every year insistent, clear as the beating of drums it falls on the listening ear so the old boy went and his mates went to back home in their hundreds strong and years were bridged in at long day through in story and speech and song. At at the Bush school love so well he gathered with his comrades gay, old Lads and Lassie's with tales to tell of memories tucked away. And bright eyed children had joined them in there happy young faces shone, as they showed old scholars are pride and care in the school that was handed on. Around them the bushland was bright with flowers, and the dear little orchid blue Bloom there with bright, in the sunlit bowers- for it is our emblem true. So the old boy drained through that day again, and it lifted his heart like a song, then Knight came down on the old home town and the hall, with its happy throng. In long brave lines they had mustered there as they had on the days of yore, and as they answered the roll - but the years take toll- there were mates who would come no more. The toast called, and the speeches made, when, trooping into the hall, with faces bright, and their eyes alight, came the girls- the toast of them all. So they broke up and wandered and formed into groups, while many have time for a song, But bashing the ear was permissible here, and they kept at it- steady and long. So the hours flitted by happiest notes of memories sweet old refrain, old friendships renewed - past doing's reviewed, the old boy was feeling strain. For his ears had been punished, his hand had been wrung, his voice was hoarse as a crow, with an ache in his jaw- "I can't take any more, while I'm all in one piece, mates, I'll go." This book is a black and white facsimile of the coloured, commemorate album presented to Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee in June, 1897, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of her reign on the British throne. The Municipalities also received original copies, each numbered as limited editions. The first two pages of the album are an address to Queen Victoria from the Municipalities of the Colony of Victoria, Australia, written in fancy Old English calligraphy. The remaining twenty-three pages display images representing each of the 208 municipalities as in 1897 and include a medallion of their Coat of Arms and statistics such as population, size and valuation, signatures of the Shire Presidents and Secretaries. The album’s publisher, Sands & Mc Dougall Limited, was first established in Sydney. This book was published by the Melbourne Branch. This set square was used in the planning and making of components for the ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. James Bernard Williams was known as Jim Williams, born 1888 at The Forth and died 1959 in Warrnambool. He was a passionate ship model builder. Jim left school at the age of 14 years to work at the Don Store in Ulverstone, Tasmania. He played piano at the silent pictures. He enlisted and fought in France along with his two brothers and was wounded there. On return to Tasmania he found it difficult to get employment. He moved to Warrnambool and worked in the menswear department at Cramond & Dickson clothing store, corner of Timor and Liebig streets, until the Depression, when he lost his job. After some time unemployed and working part time until 1932, Jim was employed at Fletcher Jones Menswear in Warrnambool. In 1957 Fletcher Jones invited Jim to write out a list of the most interesting details of the ship model Sovereign of the Seas, with the view of displaying the model and the information for a short time in the factory and then move it to the display window of the Fletcher Jones shop in Warrnambool. Jim worked there for 27 years until just before he died in 1959. His Retirement Speech letter and a Staff Photo from Fletcher Jones are included with the donation. ABOUT JIM’S MODEL MAKING For many years Jim worked on his model ships, including The Endeavour and The Sovereign of the Seas. He had a table set up in a bay window and worked on them on and off using a jeweller's eye glass on the finer pieces. He was a real perfectionist and would re-carve pieces many times until he was happy with the results. This set square is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This set square was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Set square; thin, flat metal blade with rounded corners set at a right-angle into timber stock using three rivets, each with a diamond shaped surround. There is a remnant of red paint on the timber and signs that the set square has been well used. 1892-1953 The Methodist Children's Home in Cheltenham was founded c1880 to provide housing for neglected children from the inner city. The Founders aimed to provide regular nourishment, a stable environment and integrate the children into the local community thereby improving their education and lives. However new settlers to Cheltenham area who were seeking a healthier and more respectable lifestyle for their families were not happy to share Church and School with the Home's Children. 1911 school parents committee moved to exclude the Home's Children but this was countered by the Home's Committee who defeated the motion 60 to 8. 1915 Dr Scantlebury was pressured by school parents into ordering the confinement/ isolation of all Homes Children if an infectious disease was contracted by a child. This resulted in the Homes Children missing school for months so an application was made to the Victorian Education Dept. for e School to be set up at the Home. However funds were short due to WW1. In 1917 John Livingston, former Homes child who had become successful, bequeathed his estate to the Home and the Vic.Education Dept agreed to a school at the Home. The Influenza epidemic 1919 saw the children quarantined for 4 months as a precaution at the Home. When Flu actually struck, a further 5 months isolation was ordered. July 1920 their own school was on site and continuity of education could proceed , however it reinforced the isolation of the institution contrary to the Founders vision of integration.. 1925 the Danks family funded a Domestic Economy Class for girls, but not until 1936 could the children attend the local High School so that they could pursue office work, apprenticeships, commercial college courses. 1947 a benefactor donated £5,000 to pay fees for school, university or apprenticeship in Arts & Cultural subjects. Some of the children were able to join the local society as Methodist minister, accountant, nurses, farmers, secretaries, trademen whilst others were unable to adjust as crime and misfortune ensued. 1939 some past residents began a group called Living Stones Union that they circulated to the others giving news and a sense of family connectedness among themselves. The new Burwood Homes Facility opened in 1951 and children were transferred from Cheltenham in 1952. Information on the life of Legatee Frank Doolan from a eulogy in 1988. Legatee Doolan was a very active Legatee, starting within the first year of Legacy when he was nominated by Bill Laver and Charles Copp in 1924. While he never sought 'office but he was always there - in the background - able and willing to actively serve'. In World War 1 he enlisted in November 1917 and served with 1st Division Signal Company and in France. After Armistice he attended a course for young AIF surveyors at the British Ordnance Headquarters at South Hampton designed to bring skills back to Australia. Famously it was Frank that proposed that the spirit of Legacy is service to the widows and children. "Here it received its soul. The thoughts transmitted to the Board by this quiet man." He was Legacy's link to the Big Brother movement that was sponsoring bereft children in England to be sympathetically housed in Australia. He was a foundation member of the the first boys' gymnasium class and of the literary and debating class. He worked with the Intermediate Legacy Club for it's entirety He was part of the Legacy team who worked enthusiastically for the establishment of the Shrine. It was his technical skill as a surveyor that enabled the ray of light to shine on the Stone of Remembrance at 11 am on 11th November. Also to solve the complication of daylight saving in 1976 by positioning two mirrors. For this he was awarded the British Empire Medal. Born in 1896 at Armadale he was educated in Ballarat and South Melbourne. He obtained his qualification as a licensed surveyor at the Working Men's College (now RMIT) in 1919 on returning from war. He was partner in 'Doolan and Goodchild' through the hardships of the Great Depression. Then joined firm of Mendell, Gillespie and Charleman - being supported by Legatee Jim Gillespie. He went on to Lecturer of surveying at the Working Men's College from 1926 to 1938. Then he was assisted by Legatee Alan Murray to a position with the Valuers Section of the Department of Interior. In 1953 he was promoted to be Chief Property Officer for Victoria retiring in 1961. The page from the Bulletin from 18 August 1988 shows the names of many donors that had paid tribute to Frank. A few sentiments were included by some: 'A quiet, loveable and outstanding Legatee.' 'He was my friend, guide and mentor during the 14 happy years I spent in Legacy.' The information was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. This SEC cook book was produced circa 1950s when the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme and its Commission was in full swing. The Commission had constructed two settlements, Mount Beauty and Bogong Village to house construction workers and their families in a "closed" community. These "closed" communities were for SEC staff and construction workers only. Entry into these villages was restricted to "SEC pass" carrying construction staff and their families. All facilities such as retail, sporting and other community services was provided by the SEC. This created an isolated community in which limited individual choice or administrative family leeway was available. It was a typical company town (live and work for the company). The Company was in the Kiewa Valley constructing power stations for the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme of Victoria. In one way the individual did not need to be concerned with living costs, educational needs for children, and recreational amenities and therefore "normal" community survival /living methods did not apply. This living, although restrictive, was quite simple. When the scheme was completed, in 1961, marking the end of company town, caused some of the employees, who had enjoyed the "controlled" township environment, a fair degree of angst in having the new 'laissez-faire" controls thrust upon them. This was magnified when both Mount Beauty and Bogong Village became meshed into the Bright Shire, vis-a-vis, local government. This cook book is a prime example of " the company is looking after you" and leave the worrying to us. This environment of a "company town", which creates the atmosphere of minimal personal responsibilities, is still present in a few remote mining towns in Australia at the beginning of the 21st Century.This book is a classical example of the psychological control in which the company had its construction workers families living in. The motto of many companies who had employees in isolated regions was "keep them happy". A happy and contented worker is a more productive worker. This was a period in time (1950s to 1970s) when social psychology was gaining recognition in the Australian workforce as well as internationally. At the end of the construction of all the power stations both the Mount Beauty settlement and the Bogong Village became more integrated into the main stream of rural Australia environment. Development of tourism in the region opened up not only interaction with a greater cross section of the ever expanding type of Australian but also the overseas based non rural culture tourist or immigrant. It allowed the intermingling of ideas in a non company controlled environment. The Mount Beauty and Bogong Village has, and even up to the 3000 Millennium, the same housing construction, as was built by the SEC. There has only been a very gradual change to modern domestic architectural home styles. This SEC cookbook has a folded cover with two staples at the spine, securing eight double sided pages. The white pages contain black print and sketches(3), and one black and white photograph (of the author). The front cover is mainly orange in colour with a gradual fading into yellow(at the top). The cover is approximately 210 g/m2 in thickness and each page is approximately 90 g/m2 thick.
