This program was for an event to celebrate the golden anniversary 950 years) of the official opening of Orbost's Commonwealth Hotel. It was organised by Chas and Una Roberts (nee Marshall) and was a fund-raiser for O.C.C.A. (Orbost Continuing Care}). This group was initiated by Brenda Murray who was the founding chairperson of the Orbost Continuing Care Appeal, which raised money to build an aged persons' facility for Orbost. The evening was compered by Graeme Eddy. The performers included: Victoria Strait, Leslie Strait, Norma Williams, Pauline Strait, Hoard Oberg and Wayne Stuart. All were accomplished musicians from New South Wales. The event took place at 6pm on Saturday September 2 1978.This item is associated with the Commonwealth Hotel which has been operating in Orbost since January 1901.A white paper program with black print.It is one sheet folded.On the back is a picture of the Commonwealth Hotel, Orbost with a brief history of its establishment underneath the photograph. On the front side is the title, "an evening of baroque music and a golden invitation to dinner". There is a stylised drawing of a saxophoene, drum and cello. Jessie Maud BARRIE was born on 06 November 1920 in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, she married Colin Leslie RICHARDSON on12 September 1942 in Melton, Victoria, Australia. Jessie and Colin had four children, Pamela, Barre, Helen and Graeme. She died on 26 February 1994. Dorothy Joyce BARRIE married Thomas Charles COLLINS on 07 June 1951 in Yarram, Victoria, Australia (or Strathmore Presbyterian Church. Thomas and Dorothy had three children Geoffrey, Julie and Neil. The right foot required immediate amputation and then done again. The left leg became septic and he suffered from Jaundice. He was promoted to Lieut on 1.8.1917 and placed on the supernumerary list. Corporal Phillip Edward Cook, 4470, 46th Battalion AIF Over 300 men from the Shire of Whittlesea enlisted during WWI. One of these was Corporal Cook, son of the Rev. Richard and Elizabeth Cook, and husband of Jessie May Cook of Whittlesea. On 27 July 1915, at the age of 33, Phillip Cook enlisted in the AIF. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. Corporal Cook had no grave, but is remembered with honour at the Villers-Bretenneux Memorial, Somme, France.Illuminated address, framed - Record of Admiration and appreciation to Corporal PE Cook killed in action in 1917, during WWI. Margaret Rose Teagle was born 8 June, 1912 at Sandringham, Victoria. She married Kenneth Douglas Ingram in 1935 but the mariage ended in divorce in 1944. She subsequently married Richard Fielding in 1948. Rose was diagnosed with cancer and died 30 November 1978. It is understood that this photo was taken shortly before she became ill. Soldier is "Leslie Pyers" No 2134, enlisted 25.3.1916 age 23 years in 3rd Reinforcements 38th Bn AIF. Embarked on 25.9.1916 for England, embarked for France 20.12.1916, WIA 2.6.1917 remains on duty, WIA 8.6.1917 gunshot wound hand severe. He was awarded the Military Medal at Messiness on 7.6.1917. Carrying important messages to the front line he was WIA twice and suffering from loss of blood and exhaustion he refused treatment until he got his messages through. Rejoin unit from WIA 5.12.1917, hospital with Scabies 12.1.1918 to 12.2.1918, WIA 3rd occasion 11.8.1918 gunshot wound to head. This photo of rheumatologist and founder of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV), Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006), was taken in the early days of the Association's existence. In the photo, Dr Koadlow is depicted lying on his side in his office, amongst some paperwork spread out on the carpeted floor. The photograph appears on page 3 of the Vol 9, July 1978 issue of the RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. It is captioned: "The Medical Doctor in his "office" - 5th May, 1978. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. The 8th Light Horse Regiment was raised at Broadmeadows Camp in 1914 and served at Gallipoli, Sinai, Palestine, Transjordan and Syria. At Gallipoli the regiment took part in the ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 and suffered horrendous casualties including the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White. Following the evacuation the regiment was brought up to full strength under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC and went on the participate in all the major actions of the desert campaign culminating in the capitulation of Turkey in October 1918. The regiment was in reserve at Beersheba and came under air attack resulting in the death of Lieutenant Colonel Maygar. Date is approximate. House was built in 1910 and has been demolished. The woman on the verandah is probably Mrs P Falconer, Ron Falconer's mother. Her full name was Emily Victoria Aird (1884-1957), daughter of James Bromich Aird and Sarah Ann (nee Edwards). She married Patrick Henry Falconer on 11 December 1907 in Blackburn. The Falconer family lived in Albert Crescent for many years. Listed in electoral rolls in 1916 through to the 1950s. By 1963 the family were at 33 Weybridge Street, Surrey Hills. Emily and Patrick Henry Falconer had 4 children: Ronald Keith (b1908); Hilda Irene (b 1910); Harold Leslie (b 1913) and Hilah (b 1915).
