These photographs are a pictorial and historical record of the photographer, Ronald George Thorn, of his days as an engineer with SECV. He worked in the Kiewa area as a cadet engineer from 1948 to 1950 and then in 1953 to 1956 as an electrical engineer grade 2.The photographs tell the story of one man's involvement in the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme during his employment with the state Electrical Commission of Victoria.A foolscap sized sheet of lightweight cardboard, brown in colour, with 8 small black and white photographs on page 9 and 4 small photos on page 10.Number 9 is written in ink on a small square of white paper and adhered to the page with sticky tape. Document - NEWSPAPER AND PARCEL TICKETS
Nine pages of notes and one page of copies of parcel tickets between the years 1937 - 1972. Included is some of the history of the SECV tramways. Also a short history of the tramways in Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Descriptions of the various tickets, quantities, stock on hand and the number used during the year. There are also notes on the closures of the Provincial Tramways. Attached to the front are two letters, one to Mr Hayes from Felicity Kingerlee thanking him for his article. The second is a letter from Mr Hayes to Miss Kingerlee about enclosing notes on parcel tickets of the SECV Provincial Tramways. In 1940 Field Headquarters for the Kiewa Scheme were established at Bogong with office, workshop facilities and accommodation for workmen, staff and some families constructed. (There had been a 'tent camp' on this site in 1939 but was destroyed by bushfires) Construction of accommodation continued until 1947. A total of 40 houses plus a hostel for single staff, post office, police station, medical centre and primary school all with water and sewerage and electricity supply. The staff hostel was known as Kiewa House and is now occupied by the Education Department. Lake Guy was named after Mr. L.T. Guy who was the Resident Engineer in charge of construction work and associated activities on the Kiewa area. He held this position from 1939 to November 1946 when he was transferred to Head Office. The Bogong Township was developed firstly as an accommodation centre (base camp) for construction workers employed under the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. Due to the influx of European workers into the Township the beautification of the immediate surrounds (gardens etc.) had a distinct European flavour. This environment has been very beneficial for tourism in later years. At the completion of the scheme, in the 1960's, the village was opened to public/tourism use. Strict environmental control has not allowed for any extensive redevelopment in tourist accommodation and basically restricted it to the accommodation initially built for the construction workers. Activities such a bike riding, snow skiing, restricted horse riding and bush walking on the Alpine plains and mountains are now a viable part of the Kiewa Valley Tourist Industry. Bogong Primary School opened in 1941 to provide an education for the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The school had up to date equipment and received glowing reports from school inspectors. It closed c1986.The Bogong State School was opened for the children of S.E.C.V. workers who lived in Bogong in a remote part of north east Victoria. The new State Electricity Commission construction camp at the head of the Kiewa Valley was for workmen on the second power station in the project expected to be the most modern and best equipped in Australia… In contrast to the early Kiewa days of horses and canvas tents, the new camp, with its modern amenities, compared favourably with any country town. Administration of the Kiewa Scheme was moved from Tawonga to Mount Beauty in 1946. The first house in Mount Beauty, in Hollonds Street, was occupied by the co-op store manager from November 1946. The new Mess Hall at Mt Beauty was opened with much ceremony in early November 1946. The houses up to Nelse street were erected from 1946 onward and then the township was extended beyond Nelse Street in 1950. The workmen's camp was enlarged in 1950 to the extent of providing accommodation for a total of 1,200.Shows early construction in the town of Mt. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) implemented the conversion strategy from mainly brown coal supply to hydro - electricity. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. Clover Dam and Power Station were built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the late 1930's to the early 1940's. This dam was constructed to supply water to feed four turbines (62 mega watts) at the West Kiewa Power Station. This was at the forefront of sustainable "Green" energy. Costs associated with power supplies is still a major incentive of governments, however environmentally friendly alternatives such as wind and nuclear have also made inroads. The Kiewa valley and its surrounding alpine catchment were looked at(Victorian State Government), from the beginning of the twentieth century as a source of alternate power for an ever-increasing demand for electricity by growing population and heavy industrial areas within Melbourne City and State regions. Construction of dams, such as Clover Dam provided the large quantity holding areas of water required to turn the turbines at the various power stations to provide the electricity needed. The impact of these controls by moderating water run-off from the alpine regions is beneficial in reducing flooding from thawing of snow on the alps. Photographs – SECV– Clover Power Station
The Junction Dam and Clover Dam Power Station, stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, were needed to meet the increased power demands of the wartime industry in Victoria. Clover added 26 megawatts to the grid. Junction Dam was completed and ready to hold water by September 1943, but was emptied in December 1943 and not filled again until May 1944. Photographs –Collection of 10 copies and original black and white photographs and printed articles relating to skiing on the Bogong High Plains
After World War II, the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was started in the Kiewa River Valley by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. On land previously used only for summer cattle grazing in the natural alpine grasslands, the first ski lodge was built in 1948 by workers from the hydro scheme as skiing was a popular recreation. Many of the hydro employees were of European background and had grown up enjoying skiing and snow sports in their homelands and were keen to continue to pursue their winter sports interests. The first lift, a rope tow, was built in 1951 at Falls Creek and the first chairlift in Australia was constructed there in 1957. Two T-Bars were opened in 1961. In 1964, the Victorian Municipal Directory recorded that Falls Creek had 29 ski club lodges and 16 commercial lodges. The area became a popular tourist destination for both winter and summer sports.: Employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in the Kiewa River Valley were the earliest skiers on the Bogong High Plains and built one of the first ski lodges at Falls Creek. They were amongst those pivotal in the development of the skiing and tourist industry at Falls Creek and on the Bogong High Plains. Yields information about the appearance of Bendigo Birney trams early 1970's and the Charing Cross area.Black and White Photograph of Bendigo No. 11, Birney, stored in the Bendigo tram depot, early 1970's following an accident. "In 1968, the SECV assessed damage to the tram after an accident with an automobile. Upon inspection, it was found that the side bearers of the tram body had spread, and the centre bearers had been severely distorted because of the impact. Repairs of this nature required costly engineering work and with the closure of the tramway being imminent, it was decided to place Car 11 in storage on 6 road until the cessation of SECV services in 1972. Work commenced on the restoration of this tram in 1975 and it returned to service in 1986, being painted in the SECV livery of the 1950s." Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme - Extract from 'Water Power' June 1962 & 'Kiewa Keynotes' from SEC Magazine
The SECV produced a magazine from the 1930s describing each of their locations where their employees were working. Bogong and Mt Beauty were the towns where the workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme lived as well as in camps on the Bogong High Plains. Black and white photograph of tramcar 76 at Batman Avenue terminus in 1925. The tram is a single-truck California combination tram, one of 20 built for the P&MTT in 1915. The photo was taken at Batman Avenue in 1925 and shows a driver or conductor adjusting the trolley pole. The photo shows the Batman Ave terminus and Flinders St station in the background. Tram 76 was built in 1915 by the Meadow Manufacturing Co in Sydney for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust before transferring to the MMTB in 1920. The J-class tram was bought by the SECV in 1931 and moved to Ballarat as tram No. 19. It operated in Ballarat until it was transferred to Bendigo in 1960 as tram No. 7, operating as public transport until 1972. It is now in operating condition at the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria in Bendigo. Folder - Alex McCullough's Autobiography, Kiewa Its History From A Human Point of View By Alex McCullough
Alex McCullough (1916 - 2011) was a prolific writer, an historian, a family man and resident of Mt Beauty, an employee (foreman) of the SECV, served in the war and was on the committee of many clubs (27 at one stage) and associations including the Bright/Alpine Shire (1961-1981).Alex McCullough gives an insight into the development of Mt Beauty township and its community. Due to his heavy involvement at committee level of so many clubs and associations he has been able to document the town's history during his life time enabling the reader to see the changes at all levels and to compare life during that time with that of today.Typed pages on A4 paper held by metal fastener. Visitors Book - Nissen Paradise, Welcome to our Nissen Paradise - Ski Nissen School - 1953 to 1960
Nissen Lodge was built by 1953 at Falls Creek. The first lodge at Falls Creek was built in 1947 by SECV staff members. By the 1954 Ski Season, Falls Creek Alpine Village had 10 club lodges, plus a ski tow house and a commercial lodge that both provided skier accommodation. Several other club lodges were under construction. The Nissen Alpine Club operated a rope tow with a 240m rise in altitude..Ski lessons were also available. Re: Tony and Skippy St Elmo Beveridge See KVHS 1113 By 1953, the SECV was issuing entry permits for private cars used by skiers with bookings in a Falls Creek lodge.The Nissen Ski Lodge was one of the early ski lodges at Falls Creek. Toni St Elmo Beveridge was involved in the early development of skiing at Falls Creek including assisting with the building of the early lodges, and establishing the Nissen Ski School. See KVHS 1113. The book was later used for visiors to the KVHS museum located in the old Tawonga South School.Deep red, bound, thick cardboard book with gold outline of Australia and 'Visitors" on the centre front. Many pages each with a column for Date, Name in Full and Address in Full. Written in ink and pencil both sides of each page with the first date being 14 - 6 - 1953 to 17th September 1960. Entries follow from 1985 to 1994 when the closure of the display at the old South Tawonga Primary School is noted by the KVHS Secretary. Booklet - S.E.C.V, How to Prepare & Store Frozen Food
The SECV's Home Advisory Service prepared this book to advise customers on the use of home freezers.They also assisted with advice and information on other electrical appliances. The SEC had Showrooms in regional Victoria including one at Mt Beauty where this booklet came from.The S.E.C.V. constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme employing many workers. They built the townships of Mt Beauty and Bogong and assisted with the infrastructure required to support the influx of population. In the Mt Beauty shopping centre, one of the shops was the SEC Showroom which sold electrical appliances and gave advice on their use. This book gives advise on the use of freezers.Booklet with 22 pages held together with two staples. There were two gateways at Mt Beauty. One at the West Kiewa River closing off entry to Mt Beauty township and another leading to the High Plains from Mt Beauty. Folder - Bogong Village in c1997
Bogong Village was constructed in the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Employees of the SECV lived there before the town of Mt Beauty was constructed in the late 1940s. By 1997 the village was owned by Southern Hydro who didn't want a 'non-core service' and wished to sell it.The history of Bogong Village is that of a construction town that no longer has a use for its owner. However, it has an emotional significance for people in the area, especially those who worked and lived there. It is also a tourist attraction and includes the Outdoor School - Bogong Campus which was called the Bogong Outdoor Education Centre in 1992. Its history began in 1968 when the Victorian Education Department acquired the camp buildings and four houses from the SECV.
