This Bible was given in March 1916 to Private Henry Havelock Rogers (1895-1917), the son of Joseph and Ellen Rogers of Warrnambool. He left Australia in April 1916 as a member of the 14th Battalion (17 Reinforcement Group) and died in France in April 1917 as a result of wounds. The cousins named on the card were the three older children of Arthur and Agnes Rogers, also of Warrnambool. Joseph and Arthur Rogers were brothers. The Bible was found in the MacDonald Street, South Warrnambool home of Bill Rogers, another son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers not born until the 1920s (deceased estate item). This item has a particular poignancy as it was given to a Warrnambool World War One soldier who was killed in action. Perhaps he carried the Bible with him and it was returned to his family after his death. This is a brown leather-covered book of 822 pages. The cover extends over the edges of the pages and has gold lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged and there are several colour maps at the end of the book. There is a blue ribbon marker encased in the binding. This letter has been written from France in 1917 by Private Edwin Johnson Carter to his friend Mrs Maggie Craig. It gives details of events in his life at the time – in the trenches in World War One. Private Edwin Johnson was a farmer from Nullawarre who enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He was drowned when the mail boat R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Irish Sea in October 1918. Private Johnson was returning from a visit to Ireland while on leave. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. I am somewhat calm to it now but if I am spared to return I fear it shall be my nightmare.” He did not return but we have this letter to remind us of the horrors men such as Private Carter endured. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. This is a souvenir vase produced for the tourist trade in Warrnambool. The vase was made by Victoria China in Czechoslovakia and the image of the Warrnambool War Memorial has been added for sale in Warrnambool. Similar items with suitable illustrations would have been produced for the tourist industry for other towns and places in Australia. Tourism has been an important industry in Warrnambool since the late 19th century. This vase is of interest as an example of the souvenirs available to tourists in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It is both a decorative and a useful item. This is a white china vase with an elliptical-shaped body and a circular neck with a wider opening at the top. There is a faint brown-gold colouring on the neck of the vase and this colouring is stronger on the under-side of the top opening, There is a colour illustration of the War Memorial at Warrnambool on the side of the vase. This cast iron "boiler" was produced by one of the largest foundries in England during the late 1700's and onwards. These products were "shipped to the far realms of the "British Empire". This source was one of the only ones available to the early settlers in Australia until the mid 1900's. The catch cry of those "early " times was "the best of British" which was ingrained into the early (Australian) settler's iron and cast iron purchasing mind set. It was not until after World War II did that mindset change, when both American and Asian based manufacturers' products were accepted by the Australian consumer. The city based consumer embraced the swing a lot earlier than the more "traditional" rural consumer. This cast iron 8 gallon "boiler" is very significant to the Kiewa Valley not only that large "boilers" were used to "boil" clothes clean, over an open flame source, but also because it demonstrates one of the most important "rural" mores founded by the "early" settlers in this region. That more was the very "close" tie to "Mother England" and the "establishment". The social and "family" values from the "English" way of life was ingrained until well past the day of the "Australian Federation". It was not until the friendly "American soldier" invasion during World War II that the "Empire" bondage was being eroded away. The transition from the good "rural war cry" of "Australia prospers off the sheep's back" was slipping away and the industrial monolith started its challenge. This change was the slowest in semi remote rural centres such as the Kiewa Valley. The "old English" values lingered on until the mid 1900's.This large (8 gallons) cast iron boiler is oval in shape and has a cast iron (swivel) carrying handle. The handle has a "bend" in the centre position to allow hook and straight type rods to facilitate the positioning of a "hot" boiler. This boiler would have been used over an open fire or placed on top of "coals". On the top rim and evenly spaced between the fixed handle joins is a slightly semi curved balancing/control lip.At the bottom (underneath) "CLARK & Co. PATENT", Below this a six star triangle with the letter "C" in the middle.. This book was produced after the Royal tour of Australia and New Zealand 1954 . Many people went to see the Queen as there was a lot of interest in the occasion. This was the first time a reigning monarch had toured Australia and Queen Elizabeth being a new young Queen was very popular and attracted very large crowds where ever she went. Mt Beauty residents including Cubs, Brownies, Scouts and Guides travelled to Benalla Railway Station to see the Queen on the Royal Train. Historical: At the time there was a lot of interest in Royalty. Provenance: Clare Roper, a local lady from Tawonga visited the Queen at Buckingham palace as a representative of CWA and therefore was particularly interested in the Queen's visit. KVHS has the dress that Clare wore, in their collection. Local residents recall travelling in 1954 to Benalla Railway Station to see the Queen on the Royal Train.This book has a blue hard cover with its original shiny paper cover over it. This paper cover is the Australian flag with white writing of the title, some of the stars and the red part in the top left corner. The back of the paper cover is blue with the Southern Cross. On the inside of the hard cover is a full size picture of the Queen meeting a group of early Australians & settlers with a group of soldiers in line saluting and a ship in the background. This album contains photographs of a family, (the Horns of ‘Wildwood’, Warrnambool) and other photographs of Warrnambool – the foreshore, the Soldiers’ Memorial, the Breakwater, the Hopkins River, Liebig and Timor Streets etc. It has been made by a member of the Horn family and given as a Christmas present to other members of the family. Charles James Horn came to Australia in 1881and was a tutor to the Barber family of ‘Staywood Park’, Wangoom. He and his wife Emma then worked a property at Cudgee before settling in Warrnambool at ‘Wildwood’ in North Warrnambool. One of their sons, Charles Bernard Horn married Margaret Cairns in 1916 but died in 1927. Another son, Leslie, was killed in World War One. This little album is of great interest because it contains photographs of the Horn family and other photographs of views in Warrnambool. It is therefore of considerable historical interest and will be very useful to researchers. As it is a handmade item it is also of interest because it is an example of the sort of homemade items made as presents at a time (the late 1920s) when finances for something more expensive may not have been available. These are two items which are believed to be linked. One is an envelope marked ‘C.J. Horn, Wildwood, Warrnambool’ and the other is a blue-covered homemade album of photographs bound with red wool. The front cover has ‘Warrnambool’ written in red ink and the back of the front cover is stamped ‘Ralph Barnes, Chemist, Warrnambool’. There are 22 sepia-coloured photographs of a family (the Horns) and other views of Warrnambool. All have a label on the back. The dead man's penny is a commemorative medallion which was presented to the family of soldier s who were killed in the First World War. The images of Brittania the dolphins and the lion represent Brittain and the eagle represents Germany. The name of the soldier is presented without rank to signify the equality of all sacrifice. This medallion was to commemorate Daniel Nicol Peters who came from Scotland but enlisted in the AIF in Blackboy Hill Western Australia. His regimental number was 3200. he was Killed in Action on 26 August 1918. His father was John Peters of Greenside Fifeshire Scotland. From a country with a population of approximately 5 million people, there were more than 60000 soldiers killed. This object represents but one of these soldiers. This medal was awarded to Ernest Henry Swan. He served from December 1941 to July 1942 in the Citizen Military Forces and from July 1942 to September 1944 in the Australian Imperial Forces. His reason for discharge was reserved occupation. He held the rank of corporal in 26th Motor regiment. He was born in Colac 19/11/1919 to Ernest Swan and Daisy Johnson. He died 04/08/2009 and is buried at the Warrnambool cemetery. During his life he farmed a soldiers’ settlers block in the Grasmere area, north of Warrnambool.A common item which commemorates the service of many military personnel which fought in World War 2.This medal is round and silver metal with a crowned image of George VI on the obverse and the reverse side has an image of a lion standing on top of a dragon like creature. The Australian Comforts Fund was formed during the first World War and was an amalgamation of various organisations which were sending items of comfort such as toiletries, clothing and food to Australian troops who were fighting overseas. It ceased its work and was dissolved in 1920 at the ceasation of the war but was started again to continue the same work in 1939.In Australia it rivalled the work of the red Cross and many of the volunteers involved were women. As well as making and providing items themselves there was major fundraising to purchase further items. Over the course of the war they provided over 1.5 million hampers. This certificate was presented to Mrs Steward for valuable services rendered to the Australian Comforts Fund during World War 1939-1945. The Australian Comforts fund was wound up in June 1946.This certificate recognises the work of one of our residents to a fund which was Australia wide and would have been one of numerous certificates presented around the country. The Australian Comforts fund was an organisation with which numerous people would have been affiliated and which also assisted many soldiers over the years. This post card has been sent from a military camp in England by Private George Hall to his niece Myra. Private Hall was a farmer from Purnim who enlisted in August 1915 (14th Battalion, 15 Reinforcement Group). He was aged 30 at the time. He left Australia in 1916 and transferred to 3 Field Artillery Brigade. He returned to Australia in 1919. The card gives no details of Private Hall’s activities at the time but indicates that he had sent several post cards to members of his family. This post card is of interest as an example of the many beautiful embroidered post cards that were sent by Australian soldiers to family members during World War One. The cards were usually made in France and sent from there but in this case was sent from England. The card is also of interest because it is a personal message sent from a local soldier from Purnim during World War One This is a post card from World War One. It has a written message on the back from Private George Hall to his niece Myra and it has a piece of embroidery on the front of the card. This depicts a black cat with the British colours of red, white and blue around its collar and other ornaments – a white horseshoe, a Union Jack, a white pedestal and red, green and white greenery. The words ‘Good Luck’ are stitched in yellow. The stitching is on white silk which is somewhat stained. There is a crimped border in lightweight cardboard around the embroidery. The Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Imperial League of Australia was formed in 1916 as welfare group to assist military personnel returning from the overseas active service. In 1965 the organization was renamed the Returned Services League of Australia and assists military personnel, and their families, both past and present. The Women's Auxiliaries assisted in the past with the work of the R.S.S.A.I.L.A. and today assist with the work of the Returned Services League. (The K.G.Luke company was founded in 1925 and continued until the 1980s.)This badge is of interest as one issued by the Women's Auxiliary of the R.S.S.A.I.L.A. The soldiers' settlement scheme operated after the first and second world wars in an effort to more closely settle the land and also give opportunities to returned soldiers. Crown land and other larger estates were acquired for the purpose. Most of these maps relate to the area north of Warrnambool where many of the subdivisions were parts of larger estates.These maps pertaining to the Soldiers' Settlement program, relate to an interesting part of Australian and local history. This booklet was issued to householders in Australia giving information on meat rationing during World War Two. Meat was rationed because much of the meat processed in Australia was sent overseas to Britain and to soldiers in war areas. The booklet includes hints on how to make the most of the meat ration. Meat and other key foods such as tea, sugar and butter were rationed during World War Two. Each person in Australia was allowed two meat coupons a week and, depending on the type of meat, this equated to one pound to two pounds of meat per coupon. Products such as sausages, brains, tripe, poultry, rabbits, bacon and ham were not rationed (but few people could afford poultry). This frame contains two as yet unidentified soldiers from two of Australia’s earliest overseas conflicts. The WW1 soldier has the rank of Captain and the Boer War soldier has the three stripes of Sergeant. It is possible that he belongs to the Coronation Contingent of Edward V11 in 1902.These soldiers were selected form all over Australia with 42 coming from Victoria. The Australian War Memorial cites a number of approximately 16000 soldiers who fought in the Boer War from 1899-1902. Of that number 282 died in action or as a result of wounds while around 320 died as a result of disease and accidents. Six received the Victoria Cross as well as other awards for bravery. The First World War had more drastic consequences for Australia. From a population of less than 5 million, 416809 men enlisted of whom over 60,000 were killed with 156000 wounded gassed or taken prisoner. Australian fought from 1914-1918 from Egypt, Turkey, and the Western Front in Europe. These photographs are representative of many photos which are kept in remembrance of Australian soldiers who fought in wars particularly the two world wars. The Boer war photo is a rarer one.This bi- fold photo frame is rectangular in shape with a rounded section at each top. It is leather in composition and has the Rising Sun insignia in each arch which appears to be metal. There are glass covering two photographs one of a Boer War soldier and the other of WW1. It is hinged in the middle with a double layer of leather which is broken .The Boer war photograph has a coloured flag and medal ribbons. This shield was awarded in 1909 by the Rifle Clubs of South Western Victoria for a rifle-shooting competition. Rifle Clubs operated in Warrnambool from 1860 and possibly earlier and in 1904 a union of rifle clubs in the Warrnambool district was formed - the South Western District Rifle Clubs' Union. Edward Geary was a member of the Mounted Rifles, G Company in the 1890s and served as a sergeant in the Boer War, 1899-1900. He was commended by the founder and commandant of the Victorian Mounted Rifles, Colonel Tom Price, for his bravery in South Africa rescuing wounded soldiers under heavy fire. After the Boer War Geary continued to serve in the Mounted Rifles local unit (later called Australian Lighthorse). He was also a long-time member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club and won this trophy as a member of a Lighthorse unit. This shield is of interest as an example of the early 20th century trophies awarded by the Warrnambool district Rifle Clubs. Gun Clubs and Rifle Clubs have been existing in the Warrnambool district since the 1860s. This is a small wooden shield, lightly polished on the front surface. It has silver-coloured metal plates attached by metal pins to the front of the shield in the form of a scroll, two fern or laurel leaves, printed information and a crown with two crossed rifles. The Australian Red Cross was established in 1914 as part of the British Red Cross and the Warrnambool branch was established in the same year. The local Warrnambool branch volunteers were mainly women who held sewing meetings, organized parcels for the soldiers abroad during World War One, undertook First Aid courses to be of assistance in hospitals and raised funds for the Red Cross, especially the local branch and the Melbourne branch. TOC H was founded as a Christian organisation during the First World War in Belgium in 1915. Talbot House was a venue for respite from the war for soldiers and civilians. During the 1920s TOC H spread around the world especially to Commonwealth countries. In 1923 the Governor General of Australia wrote to The Reverend "Tubby" Clayton indicating that he and Lady Forster wished to endow a TOC H lamp, the symbol of TOC H in memory of their two sons who were killed in the war. The lamp symbol is a replica of the lamp used to provide light to early Christians who sought refuge in the catacombs of Rome. The cross of Lorraine is an indicator of its origins in the Ypres salient.The lamp is a symbol of an ongoing commitment of TOC H to spread light wherever it may be required. These badges are maintained as mementos of the Warrnambool branch of TOC H which operated from a sandstone building in Koroit Street Warrnambool. These spats appear to be part of an army uniform and may have been worn by a member of an Australian Lighthorse unit. The Victorian Mounted Rifles was established in 1885 by Colonel Tom Price who lived in his retirement years in Warrnambool. Many members of the G Company Mounted Rifles from Warrnambool and district enlisted in World War One and served with distinction in the Victorian Lighthorse units which evolved from the Mounted Rifles units. These spats are retained as they are possibly part of the uniform of an Australian Lighthorse soldier early in the 20th century and may have local provenance.These are two spats or leggings made of stiffened brown leather shaped to fit the lower calf of the leg. The Eltham Shire War Memorial, a tower of remembrance, was built with public donations to commemorate the memory of the fallen soldiers from the shire who enlisted in the 1914-1918 war. The tower is reminiscent of the peel-towers or watchtowers that lined the English-Scottish border from the mid 14th century to around 1600 and is constructed from locally quarried stone. This uncommon and picturesque war memorial, which affords an excellent view of the surrounding district was unveiled by His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Stonehaven) on November 11, 1926. In July 1922 a deputation of returned soldiers from Panton Hill, presumably the Panton Hill branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA), proposed to Eltham Shire Council that the monument should be a cairn of local stone “sufficiently high to form a prominent and conspicuous landmark, and crowned with some suitable device”. Eltham Shire Councillor and President of the Panton Hill branch of the RSSILA, Basil Hall, was credited with being the first to suggest a tower, and with organising a Memorial Park committee to raise funds for the monument in the Memorial Park. A meeting for those interested in the establishing a War Memorial monument in the park was held in January 1924 and the Eltham Shire War Memorial League was formed for this purpose. It appears that the broad and rounded cairn that had been recently built was considered by the League a temporary affair, and not the substantial cairn-as-monument, sufficiently high to form the conspicuous landmark, which had been envisaged by the Panton Hill RSSILA. A design competition was held for the monument. The chairman of the League, Councillor Basil Hall, suggested that the site of the memorial in Kangaroo Ground would lend itself to something rugged, instead of polished stone. By April 1924 thirty designs for a memorial had been received from which three designs were selected and of those, the design by the shire engineer Mr McCormack, for a 70ft tower suitable for construction in rough stone, was chosen. Artist Harold Herbert suggested that a peel tower-like design reminiscent of those along the English-Scottish border would be fitting for the site. Herbert drew up a rough sketch that was approved of, and later, Melbourne architect Percy Meldrum volunteered to draw up the design from sketch to architectural drawings. By January 1925 the Soldiers’ Memorial League had adopted Meldrum’s design for a 50ft high tower. Meldrum had also offered his design and supervision of construction free of charge. The Shire provided the stone to the builders, which was a gift quarried from land owned at Kangaroo Ground by Dr Ethel and Professor William Osborne The Shire of Eltham War Memorial, a tower of remembrance, and honour board were unveiled on November 11, 1926, by the Governor General Lord Stonehaven. At this stage a temporary honour roll was painted on the panels on either side of the tower entrance. In September 1930 bronze plates were added above the portal with the names of men who fell in the 1914-18 war. On November 16, 1951, the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks re-dedicated the war memorial tower and unveiled the names of men who gave their lives in the 1939-45 war. Two additional bronze plaques which recognise service in the armed conflicts of Korea, Borneo, Malaya, and Vietnam were unveiled November 11, 2001, by the Governor of Victoria, John Landy, A.C., M.B.E. The tower was first used for fire spotting activities following the Black Friday bushfire in January 1939 in response to a request from Mr R.D. Ness, secretary of the Kangaroo Ground bush fire brigade, who asked Council that the tower be used as an observation tower for detecting bush fires, and asked Council to arrange a telephone to be installed. It was suggested that if the Shire were to appoint a caretaker for the Memorial Park, his duties could also include raising the alarm in the event of a fire. Later in 1939 Council applied for a radio transmitter, which the Forestry Commission planned to install at vantage places throughout the state. The first dedicated fire spotter appointed from December1948, was Mr Smith of Warrandyte. A prefabricated glazed cabin was installed in 1974, which involved the removal of the original stone structure around the rooftop exit door. A new fire spotting cabin, which included the latest technology, was installed soon after the 2009 Black Saturday fires and is manned by CFA personnel on high fire danger days. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898.
