Mary Forrest Gardner was born on 26th April 1845 and married Joseph Bartlett Davies on 6th February 1872 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Launceston, Tasmania. She was the sister-in-law of Sir Matthew Davies, Governor of Victoria. Her father was the Rev. John Gardner. She died on 28th October 1887 and was buried at the Boroondara Cemetery. The Mentone Presbyterian Church was built as a memorial to her. The foundation stone of the church was laid by J. Photograph is part of Old Lintonian collection ; No. 4. Mary Linton, nee Dunlop, was born in 1809 the West Indies, and married Joseph Linton in Scotland when she was eighteen. Mary and Joseph Linton migrated to Victoria in 1839, and took up a pastoral lease in the Wardy Yaloak district which they called Emu Hill. They had eleven children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. Mary died in Ballarat in 1887. Jane Graham Austin purchased Allotment 14, Section 1, Township of Linton in 1871. This property, a house and shop in Sussex Street next to the Shire Hall, had formerly been owned by her father, Thomas Austin, who was forced to sell it after being declared insolvent. Jane Austin mortgaged the property for £20 in 1878. When Thomas Austin left Linton in 1882, his daughter sold the property to Benjamin Dodd, who in turn sold it in 1887 to John Angus.Approximately A3-size sheet of blue paper which has been folded twice. Robert Hobson purchased 148 acres of land in Crown Portion 17 from the Crown Grantee John Brown in 1877, which was sold to George Knowles Parker and John Howard Aylwin in 1887. A major purchaser of this land east of the Greensborough Road was Mary Baird in 1929. Although Baird died in 1944, sales from her estate continued until 1956. Date of the photograph is not known. Criterion House was built by Samuel Steele in 1862/1863. Samuel Steele left Linton in the late 1860s, but it is not known if B. N. Dodd was the next owner of the building. B. N. Dodd was mentioned in advertising as a Linton draper in 1878. He sold the shop and moved to Ballarat in 1887. The upper floor of the building was used as a hospital from around the end of WWI to the early 1920s. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Fortuna villa: originally a resplendent villa of two storeys comprising six rooms in the ground floor and five on the second. It was situated beside the New Chum line of reef and was of 350 square metres. In 1887 Fortuna was enlarged with the addition of a mansard between the billiard and music rooms. The entrance hall was demolished and replaced with the hall which stands today. Work continued until 1904 by which time Fortuna was three storeys high. The building was befitting any prince, and soon became an entertainment centre for notable visitors to Bendigo. The Ballarat Trades Hall building is located at 24 Camp Street, Ballarat. The foundation stone was laid in October 1887. (Architects were Messrs James and Piper and builders were Messrs Lietch and Outtrim.) Over several decades, the façade of the building has fallen into disrepair and was posing a safety risk. Thanks to Victorian heritage grants and ongoing public donations, refurbishment of the façade is currently underway by Troon Pty Ltd. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). That area of Kew bordered by Cotham Road, Park Hill Road, Ermington Lane (now Ermington Place), and Belmont Avenue contained some of the significant homes owned by Kew pioneers. Chief among these was ‘Park Hill’ on an enormous lot facing Park Hill Road. The Jubilee History of 1910 noted, six years after this plan was drawn, that: ‘Park Hill Road, forming the southern boundary of the cemetery, takes its name from Park Hill, the residence of Mr. Thomas Judd, who has resided there since December, 1852.’ Other named houses on the plan include ‘Ferndale’ facing Cotham Road; ‘Ermington’ adjacent to Judd’s Park Hill, facing Park Hill Road; and ‘Gilden’ and ‘Mont Belmont’ facing Belmont Avenue. Mont Belmont was designed by the architectural firm of Reed, Henderson and Smart for William George Lilley in 1887 and was completed in 1888. This is a Bible with a heavily embossed cover with pressed gold panels featuring gold lettering , scroll patterns and images of Biblical scenes and saints. The spine has scroll patterns and gold lettering. Inside the front cover the spine has been reinforced with blue adhesive tape. The spine and the front pages are partly detached. The pages are gilt-edged and contain printed text and black and white and colour illustrations and a handwritten name in black ink. This book was awarded to Roydon Osmond Moore in 1889 for second prize for scripture in the second form. Roydon enrolled in Ballarat College in 1887 at the age of 8 along with his siblings: Leslie Travis Stanley Moore (B.D. 4/2/1877) and Gilbert Kent Moore (B.D. 14/12/1877). In the original register Parent/Guardian is listed as R.T.Moore, residing at 1 Cardygin Terrace/200 Sturt Street. It also documents that Roydon and his brothers previously attended Miss Jago's School II Class.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Arthur Ernest Albert Dawson entered Ballarat College 4 August 1886. The 1887 Ballarat College Sports program lists Arthur's name against Hurdles, Flat Race, and High Jump. Unfortunately the medal is undated. The intriguing inscription 'Twice Second' may refer to Arthur's competition for the College Cup, a highly valued Athletics Prize. The school does not hold sufficient records from this era to confirm any further details. The medal was donated to the school by Arthur's great-nephew, Ken Dawson, in 2019. The medal has social significance. It reveals the very high value placed on sports involvement at the school from its earliest beginnings. William Edward Watkins was born at Carlton, Victoria on 18 June 1887. He entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1922 and completed his course in 1924. He was ordained and inducted at Collingwood in 1924. In 1925 he was assistant to the Rev. John Barnaby in the Group Mission, which included the churches of Fitzroy and Collingwood. He was called to St. John's Ballarat in 1927, South Melbourne in 1930, St. David's Geelong in 1936, Kew Presbyterian in 1942 and Wallan in 1950. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established and the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and situated on Pall Mall was the central distribution centre for receiving and delivering telegrams and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. J.A.Chalk was a partner in the Madam Berry Mines together with Martin Loughlin and William Bailey and was Manager of the Buninyong Estate Co., the Band and Barton Co., the Sebastopol Plateau Co., and the Prince of Wales and Bonshaw Co. mines in 1887. Chalk was a Quaker and benefactor to many Ballarat institutions. He arranged for the Council Chambers to be made available for meetings of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in the mid 19th century.One of a pair of large 19th century ornamented candle holders for use in the Chapel at Nazareth House Ballarat presented by 19th century Ballarat philanthropist and gold-mining magnate.The candleholders are in two separate sections the heavy lead-filled brass base with demountable seven-branched candleholders surmounting the base. The lower portion or base form a single candlestick when the branched top section is removed.
