The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. Sepia photograph of Hopwood's Punt, showing the gangway extended to river bank. There are 5 workmen, dressed in work clothes and boots, at the front of the punt and 2 gentlemen, dressed in coats and umbrellas. Stock, produce (possibly wool bales) and people are on board. There are 3 horses hitched to a wagon and behind there looks like a large consignment of wool bales. There appears to be women at the side of the punt (1 with an umbrella up). At the side of the punt there appears to be a passenger landing. There is also a small row boat tied to the side of the punt. Wagons, barge and possibly other punts are in the background. There was a painting of this scene by J. C. Armytage around 1857.This is a very good example of the cargo, people, produce and animals, that were using the punt to cross the Murray river in the late 1800s. One of the toll bags used to collect tolls on the Great Ocean Road. First "Toll Gate" at Sunnymeade Estate as the road went through land owned by Mr C J Lane. Toll gates followed at "Stradbroke Point",later changed to "Stradbroke Knoll" named after the Govenor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke, Grassy Creek and "The Springs". Mr W D McKay first toll keeper, then Mr & Mrs Wright. Toll commenced circa 1925 and ended 2nd October 1936. Cars were charged at 2/6 for car and driver and 1/- for each passenger. Motor cycles 2/-. Stevenson, Robert, Kangaroo Ground, was born in the County of Evelyn, Victoria in 1845, He is the son of the late Joseph Stevenson and retains the property purchased by his father, with 47 acres adjoining, making in all 127 acres, where he carries on farming, and also a vineyard, the grapes from which have taken a number of prizes at agricultural societies’ shows at Heidelberg and other places. The photograph features many prominent members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society during the early 1920s a number of whom were founding members of the Society, including A. J. Lucas (Lekatsas) the founding president and Angelos Lekatsas (Lucas) who was the second president. Archimandrite Irineos Kassimatis is pictured with the group. Most of the group are wearing a buttonhole pin on their jacket lapels which indicates the photo was taken at gathering to celebrate a baptism. It was traditional that following the baptismal service a small icon or cross was pinned on each of the guests to symbolise they were witnesses to the baptism. This pin is called a 'martiriki' derived from the Greek word 'martiras', which translated means a witness. Dewrang Guest House is situated at the corner of The Crescent and the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road at Sassafras. It belonged to the Green family who owned the garage and coach service which operated from the site of the current Sassafras Tavern. Dewrang burned down in 1931. Gunpowder is very volatile and can be ignited by the smallest spark. Several horrific accidents resulted in NSW passing legislation to cover the safe storage of gunpowder but initially these laws did not apply to Victoria. this was rectified and the first Melbourne magazine was erected on Batman's Hill in 1845. The Victorian Gunpowder Act (1857) made local councils responsible for the safe storage of gunpowder. The Victorian government made L.909 available for a suitable building in Sandhurst. Built on Camp Hill it was finished in April 1857 and the first keeper, Mr J. F. Kerr was appointed in October 1857. The waterbody was the site of a quarry that existed between Grovedale Road and James Street, Surrey Hills on land owned by J B Maling (senior). Clay from it was used to make bricks for local houses. The quarry became a hazard and after several drownings was filled in. The Grovedale Park now occupies the site. Muriel Hedwig Lucy Pornitz, also known as Muriel Pornett, lived locally. She was born in Melbourne in 1894 and studied at the South Australian School of Arts & Crafts in 1911 under James Ashton and Fred Britton, and at the Australian School of Etching in Sydney. She was also an illustrator and cartoonist. She died in 1982.A small oil painting on canvas board in a dark wood frame of a water body with a clay bank behind and 2 trees above the bank. John J. Huntly appears to have been the only licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, built in 1858. Commercial Hotel Bank Street Port Fairy Formerly known as The Royal Oak and then renamed The Royal Oak in the 1990's. A verandah was added in 1900. Around 1877 the hotel various rooms for visiting doctors and a dentist. Dr Berncastle who was associated with the Sydney Eye Infirmary performed several operations there on those suffering from cataracts. It was the meeting place for the Port Fairy Freemasons, before their lodge was built in James Street and all local sporting clubs at one time or another. This was later changed to a Combined Division Race on PHD handicap then again changed to IRC handicap. In the late 1960s the area in Wodonga between Hovell and Havelock Streets was zoned for civic purposes. By 1969 Melbourne architect Bruce Marshall had designed the civic centre which included a library, theatre and senior citizens' rooms. The main hall had a seating capacity of 1,000 people but could be divided by a sliding door. into smaller areas. It also included meeting rooms and kitchen facilities. The Civic Centre was officially opened by the Honorable Sir Henry Bolte, K.C.M.P., M.P., Premier of Victoria who was accompanied by the Honorable R. J. Hamer E.D., Minister for Local Government. Daisy Livingstone Smith was born in Linton in 1903, a daughter of Shire Secretary Alfred John Smith (Alf J Smith) and Ada Smith née Watson. After first being privately educated, she attended Linton State School from 1911, and went on to Queen's College in Ballarat (a Church of England grammar school for girls), where she was Dux in 1918. After leaving school she worked as Linton librarian, and then as a financial officer for the Shire of Grenville. In 1941 she married Roy Brown. The "letters to Lillie" show the international nature of the Mission to Seafarers. They are an important display of the handwriting style of the time, revealing courting attempts and give us an insight into life in 1925.Lillie Duncan was a member of the Harbour Lights Guild and this letter forms part of a collection of letters sent to her by different seafarers.Letter addressed to Miss Lillie Duncan, 11 Paxton St, East Malvern, Melbourne, Australia from J. The work took place from October 1979 to May 1980 on the southern boundary of Hubbard Reserve, North Ringwood. The collection was presented to the Ringwood Historical Research Group by J Clarke on 9th June 1980.
