This meat safe has no known local provenance but it would be typical of the safes used in a domestic situation to house fresh meat. Usually the safe was hung in a house corridor or verandah or outside in a cool place where there was a breeze that passed through the mesh and kept the contents cool. The mesh also prevented flies and other insects from getting into the safe. Meat safes were widely used in Australian homes in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century, sometimes in conjunction with ice chests, until they were replaced by refrigerators. The bowler hat was first made by the hatters, Thomas and William Bowler, in 1849 and was said to have been commissioned by the owners of Holkham Hall, England, for use by gamekeepers on horseback to protect their heads from low-hanging branches. This docket from the firm of Wilson and Anderson, auctioneers, gives details of the sale of 10 bullocks on behalf of C.E. Tilley of ‘Aringa’, Port Fairy. The total profit for Mr Tilley was £217-10-0. Wilson and Anderson were stock and station agents operating in the early 20th century from the Royal Chambers in Kepler Street in Warrnambool. C.E. Tilley was a member of the Tilley family, with Joseph Tilley running the property of ‘Aringa’ in the early 20th century. Joseph Tilley was also the owner at the time of the Penshurst Hotel. This docket is of some importance as it is an original one and gives details of a 1916 sale of cattle with the names Wilson and Anderson and Tilley of some local interest. This item was supplied by William Ferguson, a jeweller, watchmaker and optician in Timor Street, Warrnambool in the early part of the 20th century. He was Mayor of Warrnambool in 1901-2. It is not known to whom the spectacles belonged. This item has no specific provenance but it is of importance as an example of the type of object supplied by William Ferguson, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the early 1900s. This is a spectacles case made of stiffened leather with a leather handle at the top that slides back to allow the case to be opened. The top of the case lifts up to allow the spectacles to be removed. The case has the name of the supplier (W.Ferguson) stamped in gold print on the side. This book belonged to a Marian Adams from Limerick but, unfortunately no information has been found on this person or the connection to Warrnambool. There were several families in the Warrnambool area with the name ‘Adams’ in the 19th century. This book is kept as an interesting 19th century book but it will be of greater interest if information is found on Marian Adams. This is a hard cover book of 516 pages. The cover is brown leather with gold embossed ornamentation and gold lettering on the spine. The pages are gilt-edged and the cover has become partly detached from the binding. The pages are much stained and the cover is very rubbed. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. There are eight engravings on steel in black and white and all are protected with white tissue. He ministered to and advocated on behalf of the seagoing fraternity both merchant and Naval forces and was an instrumental force in the stamping out of the practice of crimping and the exploitation of seafarers. He received and forwarded the letter from 22 sea captains (MTSV 0030 requesting the establishment of a Mission in the vicinity of the Australian Wharf. This butter cooler was used in households to prevent butter from melting in the warmer weather. Ice would have been used in the butter container. The top of the container is domed, indicating the shape of the butter at that time (late 19th century). This butter cooler would have been a costly item and would have graced the dining table of a family that had considerable means. It would have been used on a dining table even after the invention of refrigeration in the 1880s as the eating rooms would have had little or no cooling mechanisms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This butter cooler has no known local provenance but it is a very attractive item and is retained as a good example of a household item no longer in use. It will be very useful for display.This is a silver butter cooler with a circular base with an ornamented edge. The base has a stem holding two highly ornamented arms branching out from the sides. These arms hold an oval container which has a chased silver base and an overhanging chased silver top. Inside the container is the space to hold ice or cold water. On top of the inside of the container sits a small round lid which holds the butter and the ice. The lid has several small holes for the ice water to drain underneath. The base of this lid is impressed with moulded fruit and leaves. The oval container has an over-arching handle attached. This is highly ornamented in fretwork. The sides of the container have two projecting pieces for holding the butter cooler and two other smaller projecting pieces with chains attached for hanging the object. One of these pieces has an oval holder for turning the hinged top of the container to close the container. This top has a chased silver patterning on its top. THE CARRON COMPANY The Carron Company established its ironworks on the banks of the River Carron in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, in 1759, and became an incorporated company in 1773. The company was the largest ironworks in Europe during the 19th century. It supplied ammunition and armaments, steamboat engines, pig iron, cast iron goods such as flat irons, balustrades, fire grates and bath tubs, pillar boxes and telephone boxes, and even cast iron rings for underground tunnels. In 1982 it became insolvent and was taken over by the Franke Corporation, using the brand Carron Phoenix.This iron is representative of the domestic appliances used throughout Australia up until electricity became widely available for domestic use.An antique Carron iron made of solid cast iron. Item used around the first quarter of the 20th century The suitcase didn't catch on until the end of the 19th century, it was quite literally as a case for suits. A typical suitcase came equipped with an inner sleeve for storing shirts, and sometimes a little hat box on the side. But even in the early 20th century, the "dress-suit case" was only one of countless styles of container travellers could buy, from steamer trunks to club bags. By the late 19th century a significant point was reached in the history of transportation, it was the beginning of mass tourism, rather than travel for travels sake made use of by the wealthy in society. Travel wasn't just for the wealthy any more but everyone. Suitcases began as an afterthought in the luggage and leather goods business, but they soon became the very symbol of travel. An 1897 wholesale price list included the words "suitcase" only twice in a 20-page list of luggage types. In America a 1907 T. Eaton & Co. Catalogue, trunks took up a full page while suitcases share a page with club bags and valises. In a 1911 a United Company catalogue, now displayed around 40 per cent of the advertisements were for suitcases. Early suitcases were lighter and more portable than trunks, but they were still bulky by today's standards. Leather, canvas, wicker or thick rubbery cloth was stretched over a rigid wood or steel frame. Corners were rounded out using brass or leather caps and some had wooden rails running around the case. Until steamship travel declined during the mid-20th century, many of these types of the case were advertised as waterproof with some lightweight models marketed specifically to women. The item gives us a snap-shot as to how people undertook travelling during a time when undertaking a journey for pleasure at the end of the 19th and early 20th century was mainly only for the wealthy. This time saw the beginnings of change from the wealthy in society being able to travel, to the onset of mass tourism. Proudfoots’ Boathouse was built in 1885 by Thomas Proudfoot and has remained an important historic building in Warrnambool to this day. In the late 20th century the original buildings were lifted and renovated and a new building constructed in front. This booklet is of high interest because of the many names listed from Warrnambool, Panmure, Framlingham, Nullawarre, Nirranda, Ballangeich, Allansford, Port Fairy Grasmere and other small towns. The booklet not only lists those residents at that time in history but also tells us something about those people, their philosophies and attitudes, through which sayings they chose. Well-known names include those of Terrington, Fidler, Burnie, Uren, Tomlinson, McGinness, Peacock, Murnane and Dallimore. This is a soft cover booklet of 22 pages.
