His mates played an informal competition, in Timboon the first year, but thereafter at Peterborough. The tournament grew in popularity among his mates until the Golf Club incorporated it into their program and it became an annual event open to all.It is still popular with Snow's friends. A class photo of a group of young legatees at a gymnastics class in Malvern. There are 43 boys, of various ages, in gymnastics gear. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. David FERRY (1957- ) Born in Blackpool, United Kingdom. David Ferry studied painting at the Camberwell Schools of Art and printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is currently Professor of Printmaking and Book Arts at the Cardiff School of Art, Cardiff Metropolitan University,Wales. He was Former Associate Professor of Fine Art Media, at the Long Island University, New York, USA, and former Head of Printmaking at the Winchester School of Art, UK. David Ferry was awarded a Fellowship of The Royal Society of Arts for his contribution in the foundation of the Curwen Print Study Centre in Cambridge where he became its first Artistic Director in 2003. In 2010 he was made Professor of Printmaking at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, and a full Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter / Printmakers (RE).Framed screenprint which forms part of a series called ‘Cake walking in Scotland’ which was printed 2015/16. It is a Digital Archive print with gold and silver leaf and glitter and varnish. "Upon entering a strange place, the visitor is disorientated. He looks for key markers that can act as signposts to help him find his way. Photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The photo was taken at a Stanhope reunion held at Kooyong Tennis Club on 3 November 1984. Names aren't labeled but Matron Dorrie Vines appears third from right. The documents include a letter sent to former residents on 27 September with details of the night signed Bill Saggers on behalf of the committee of Alison Ball, Frank Bury, Ron Dennis, John McBain, Bill Saggers. Two pages are a list of names of attendees, including their maiden names and Legatees that were attending. There is also an overseas telegram from Ken Clarke to the Legatee Robertson expressing apologies that he would not be able to attend the reunion. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01837. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. Victorias first quarantine station was established in Port Ormond on 24 April 1840 when the government immigrant ship "Glen Huntley" arrived in the Port Phillip District flying the yellow quarantine flag . The site is marked by a cairn and plaque that was unveiled in 1985. In 1990 a second plaque was affixed to the cairn to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship. [from contemporary reports:] 1981: 16-18 October. “Pioneers of Eltham” and horse drawn vehicle. This year's festival will be held from 16th to 18th October, with the festival parade being held on Saturday 17th. In recent years the Society has participated in the parade and also organised a display for the festival. We have won prizes for our parade entry for the last two years. The committee has given preliminary consideration to our participation and it has been agreed that we should again enter the procession. This matter will be discussed at the September meeting. / The Society's float in the festival parade again won a prize. This year we won the prize for the best effort by a local group, donated by Bob Clarke's Menswear. As in previous years Peter Quirke has allowed us to use his truck as a float. Peter has formerly operated his fruiterer's business at Research and Diamond Creek and has recently opened a shop in the Eltham Village Arcade. Joh Ebeli, with a little more assistance from other members than in previous years, again did an excellent job in decorating the float. Members of the Victorian Folk Music Club again accompanied us on the float and their music helped create the appropriate mood. A new feature of our parade entry was the inclusion of horse drawn vehicles owned and driven by the Hennel family of Hurstbridge. They certainly added to a highly successful day. In the last issue of this Newsletter we mentioned the award won by the Society for its entry in the Eltham Community Festival Procession. In recent years the Society has participated in the parade and also organised a display for the festival. We have won prizes for our parade entry for the last two years. The committee has given preliminary consideration to our participation and it has been agreed that we should again enter the procession. This matter will be discussed at the September meeting. / The Society's float in the festival parade again won a prize. This year we won the prize for the best effort by a local group, donated by Bob Clarke's Menswear. As in previous years Peter Quirke has allowed us to use his truck as a float. Peter has formerly operated his fruiterer's business at Research and Diamond Creek and has recently opened a shop in the Eltham Village Arcade. Joh Ebeli, with a little more assistance from other members than in previous years, again did an excellent job in decorating the float. Members of the Victorian Folk Music Club again accompanied us on the float and their music helped create the appropriate mood. A new feature of our parade entry was the inclusion of horse drawn vehicles owned and driven by the Hennel family of Hurstbridge. They certainly added to a highly successful day. In the last issue of this Newsletter we mentioned the award won by the Society for its entry in the Eltham Community Festival Procession. This photograph is representative of the relationship between the Mission to Seafarers Victoria and the Anglican Church. The image also historically depicts the courtyard at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria from approximately the early 1950s.Reverend Frank Oliver served as Chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria for almost thirty years. The photograph shows the historical ties between the Mission and the Anglican Church towards the end of Oliver's chaplaincy in the 1950s.
