This book is a technical book that was originally from the Wendouree Woollen Mills but latterly was part of a collection of books owned by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. The Wendouree Woollen Mills in Ballarat began in 1870 as a flour mill and became the Doveton Woollen Mill in 1877. In 1918 it became the Myer Woollen Mill (Myer Emporium ownership) and in the 1920s it was a knitting mill. After Myer sold the mill it was known as Wendouree Woollen Mill but it closed in 1975. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in Harris Street, Warrnambool was established in 1910 on the site of an earlier woollen mill destroyed by fire in 1882. It was a successful business for many years and closed in 2000 after 90 years of operations but by that time it had been bought by successive companies including the multinational company Dunlop. In 1968 the Warrnambool Woollen Mills (Dunlop era) purchased Wendouree Woollen Mills and transferred much of its operations to Warrnambool until the Ballarat mill was closed in 1975. This explains why a Wendouree Woollen Mill book was in the Warrnambool Woollen Mill building when it closed. This book is of some interest as a good example of technical books produced in the early 1920s. It would have been well-used by woollen mills workers and foremen at the time. It is also of interest as it comes from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and so it is a memento of a most important and influential business in Warrnambool in the 20th century. A great number of local people were employed at this mill over the years and it enjoyed for many years a national reputation for quality products. This is a hard cover book with a dark blue cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The title of the book is printed in an ornate script and is underlined with two gold lines. The book has 277 pages commencing with page 273 as the book is Volume Two of this title. The book, about wool combing was written by Fred Bradbury. It has a Preface, a Contents page and fifteen chapters commencing with Chapter 21 and ending with Chapter 35, an Index and several pages of advertisements for other technical books. These seven volumes contain of the history of the Second World War from the English point of view. The inscription shows that the books belonged to James Low. Scottish born James Low came to Australia and worked in the Swintons' shoe store in Warrnambool. He served in World War One and in the 1930s he opened his own shoe business. He died in 1976. This is a de-luxe edition of a 1984 facsimile publication of Edward Vidler’s 1907 book, ‘Sixty Years of Progress’. The facsimile book was published by the Osburne Group, a group of three Warrnambool men who reproduced several books that were out of print but were important in Warrnambool’s history. The facsimile book features the photographs and text of the original 1907 book alongside photographs and text concerning Warrnambool in the 1980s. J.B. Dwyer, who was given this de-luxe edition, was a prominent 20th century lawyer in Warrnambool. The original Edward Vidler book was produced to mark the sixty year anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. It is a very rare book today but it is very important because it featured many photographs hitherto-unpublished and an accompanying text that is deemed today to be very accurate in historical terms. Edward Vidler, a publisher, writer, journalist and editor, was in Warrnambool in the early 1900s and, through his membership of the Warrnambool Progress League and the Chamber of Commerce, was responsible for initiating many improvements in the town and he was also responsible for organizing the making of the Pioneer Honour Board with its portraits of 204 pioneer men in the Warrnambool district.This book is of interest as a de-luxe edition of the 1984 facsimile publication of the Edward Vidler book, ‘Sixty Years of Progress’, a 1907 book on Warrnambool’s history. This folder contains cards listing suppliers for the Warrnambool business, Swintons Pty Ltd. The cards date from the 1930s to the 1980s and contain information on the suppliers for seeds and farm requirements such as poultry pellets, calf food and stock salt. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, china, glass and hardware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. After William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, hardware and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger is of interest as one from the Swinton business in Warrnambool. It gives us an idea of the items sold by Swintons Pty Ltd over a fifty-year period in the 20th century and will be very useful to researchers. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street, Warrnambool for 152 years, it is among the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a black Kalamazoo folder made of thick board covered with material (leather?). The material is worn at the edges. The folder has a metal insert affixed with metal studs. The insert has thin metal wires strung across the inside. To these are affixed at the top with metal clips heavy-duty paper cards. There are two green cards with printed black material, one white card with printed blue material and the rest of the cards are yellow. The yellow cards are placed one under the other in a fan design. The yellow cards have printed red lines and printed titles and contain handwritten material, mostly in black ink. These books appear to have been published in successive years as the inscription on one is 1875 and the contents of another deals with the history of India in 1878. The owner of the volumes was William Cassady (1824-1885).In 1846 he settled near the Merri River in the district that is today the Cassady's Bridge area in Caramut Road, Warrnambool. The property was called "Boughton". He married Elizabeth Anderson in 1857 and they had eleven children surviving to adulthood.These volumes are of antiquarian interest as they are an attractive example of the type of books owned by early settlers in the Warrnambool district. The activities of the British in India would have been of interest to settlers in other parts of the British Empire at that time. The books are also of interest as they belonged to William Cassady, a prominent early settler in the west Warrnambool area.These are five volumes of hard cover books with green covers and elaborate scrolls and decorations on the front covers and spines. The title lettering on the front covers is in black and gold. This knitting pattern book dates from about the 1940s. Garments made with a Fair Isle pattern, especially sleeveless vests for men, were popular at that time. In the early to mid 20th century in Australia many of the woollen garments worn were handmade. Today this is not the case and hand-knitted garments are rare. Miss McClure had a lingerie and babywear shop at 114 Liebig Street before the building was demolished in 1953. This book is of minor interest as an example of a 1940s knitting pattern book and as a memento of Miss McClure’s shop in Liebig Street at that time. This is a booklet of 16 pages. These items, 1930s bank books belonging to Michael Toohey, a Woodford farmer, come from the estates of the Ardlie family of Warrnambool and appear to have been stored amongst the office material of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie (1843-1933). He was the son of pioneer Warrnambool settlers, John and Mary Ardlie. William Ardlie established a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1867, initially in partnership with George Barber. Ardlie was a dominant figure in legal and community circles in Warrnambool and continued with his legal practice until the early 1930s. The bank books were issued by the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. A Warrnambool branch of this bank was established in 1927 when it acquired the Bank of Victoria. The Warrnambool branch of the Bank of Victoria at 92 Liebig Street then became the Commercial Bank of Sydney. In 1958 the bank building was demolished and new premises were built. This book belonged to Rolf Crawley who was an engineer in the employ of the Shire of Warrnambool at the time he acquired this book. In 1926 he was the engineer/secretary for the Minhamite Shire, returning in 1935 to the Shire of Warrnambool as the engineer after the death of his father, John William Crawley Junior. Rolf retained this position until 1968. Rolf’s grandfather, father and uncle had all been engineers or shire secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire of Warrnambool which existed from 1863 to 1994. This book is retained as a memento of Rolf Crawley, the engineer with the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. This is a hard cover book of 626 pages. This recipe booklet has been produced as a fund-raiser for the West Warrnambool State School. The production of recipe books such as this one was a popular school project in the 1960s and 70s. West Warrnambool School No. 4899 opened in February 1966 with an enrolment of 183 children and a staff of 8 teachers under the Head Teacher J.J.Godfrey. The West Warrnambool School still operates today in Hoddle Street Warrnambool.This booklet is retained as an example of the recipe books produced for fund raising purposes by non-profit organizations in the second half of the 20th century. This is a book offering the reader ways to combat mental and spiritual stress. The author, the Rev. Gordon Powell (1911-2005) was born in Warrnambool to Louisa and George Powell. His father was a dentist in Kepler Street Warrnambool. Gordon Powell was educated in Melbourne and was a Presbyterian Minister in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and U.S.A. He was an R.A.A.F. chaplain in World War Two and established the Alcoholics Anonymous organization in Victoria. At St. Stephens Church in Sydney he attracted large attendances at both his Sunday and week-day services and became well-known for his religious radio broadcasts. He wrote several books and many articles for religious journals. This book is retained because it is the only piece of writing we have by the Rev. Gordon Powell who was born in Warrnambool in 1911 and was one of the most influential Presbyterian Church ministers in Australia in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 128 pages. This book was a prize given by Warrnambool Technical School in 1934. Warrnambool Technical School was established in Timor Street in 1913. John King, whose name appears on the book plate of this book, was the first head teacher and remained in this position for 29 years. In 1972 the Technical School was moved to Caramut Road, Warrnambool and in 1989 the school was renamed Brauer College. The old Technical School site in Timor Street now houses the South West Institute of TAFE. The book was donated by William Reed who had a bookstore and newsagency in Timor Street at the time. The book was given to Winnie Ferrier. Members of the Ferrier family have been in the South Warrnambool area since the 1850s and the 19th century Ferrier families were associated with Warrnambool port activities. This book is retained as a memento of the Warrnambool Technical School in the 1930s with its references to John King, the foundation Principal, the donor of the book, William Reed, a Warrnambool businessman and the recipient of the book, Winnie Ferrier, with the name Ferrier well-known in South Warrnambool in both the 19th and the 20th centuries. Eight of these letter books contain letters written by the Warrnambool lawyer George Mackay. They are mostly letters written to contacts while he was living in Scotland and letters sent from Warrnambool to Scotland to his daughter, Margueretta (Meta) who was studying medicine. Scottish-born George Sutherland Mackay (1850-1926) opened a legal practice in Kepler Street, Warrnambool in 1891 and in 1893 bought the business of the late James Fletcher, with the business known as Fletcher and Mackay. In the 1920s John Taylor became a partner and the firm of Mackay, Taylor & Co. (later Mackay Taylor) continued until 1999 when it merged with Taits Solicitors to form Tait Taylor (now Taits Legal). George Mackay was a Warrnambool Councillor and the first Mayor to hold office for four successive years. He was instrumental in getting the Warrnambool High School established and was the Chairman of the first School Council. Two of these letter books contain letters written by Ernest Powling. One letter book contains letters written by James Mack, a Warrnambool accountant These letter books are of considerable importance as they contain letters relating to legal matters in Warrnambool and district from the late 19th century to the mid 1940s. These three books contain braille printing and may have come from The Victorian Association of Braille Writers and may have been used by Miss Skirrow in South Warrnambool in 1916. This latter information comes from the loose card in one of the books. Braille writing was invented by the French man Louis Braille in 1824 based on the French alphabet. The original Shire of Eltham was founded in 1871. Prior to its founding, the district was managed by the Eltham District Road Board, which was established in 1856. The initial rate assessment commenced in 1857 for the year ending October 14, 1858. The honour of being recorded with the first assessment went to a farm of 110 cultivated acres at Lower Plenty, owned by John Porter and occupied by Albert Baines. It was assessed at 6d/acre providing for a rate income of £2 15s. In July 2017, officers at Nillumbik Shire Council discovered some early Eltham Road District Assessment books and donated them to the Eltham District Historical Society. The seven volumes were the district’s first six years of rate assessments. This was a unique and significant record of early settlers in the pre-Shire of Eltham. They immediately became one of the oldest and most valuable items in our collection. An article on page 5 in the Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser, Friday, 21 November, 1941 titled: ‘District’s Early History‘ states: “The first rate book which is still in existence at the Shire Office is for the year ending October 14, 1858 and is probably the best record possible to indicate the development of the district. At the time properties were rated as follows: Cultivated land. 6d. per acre; pasture land, 1d. per acre: estimated annual value of buildings, etc., 6d in the (pound). The total amount of rate recorded for the year was £153/14/8. Properties were described as being situated at Lower Plenty, Yarra Yarra, Eltham, Lower Eltham, Kangaroo Ground, Yarra Flats, Diamond Creek and the Yarra.” Given the precious nature of this collection, priority was given to digitise the rate books and place them in suitable archival storage to minimise further handling. Subsequent discussion amongst our Collections team arrived at the conclusion that the most appropriate home for this valuable record was the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV), the archive of the State Government of Victoria and who are charged with archiving and caring for all Government related records. An approach was made to PROV who confirmed these records would complete their collection of rate assessment books for Eltham. The collection has been catalogued into a number of Series. The main series are Series 1: Main Photographic Series; Series 2: Main Transparency Series; and Series 3: Brochures and Published materials. Every Item in each of these major Series has been individually catalogued on a spreadsheet, one spreadsheet per Series. A further 70 Series have been created to catalogue smaller, discrete collections of photographs and negatives and other memorabilia including registers, published materials and objects. The completion of its transfer to the Society was noted in Newsletter No. 159 November 2004. Generally memorabilia items classified as part of Council 's art collection and negatives of historical photographs have been retained by the Council. The items now stored at our Local History Centre are quite diverse. They include many photographs of Council activities, Councillors and Council staff. There are Council brochures, calendars and other publications. All of these items are catalogued and stored in quality archival boxes. Also included is a large collection of old Council registers such as letter books, contract registers, cash books, etc. Many of these are large leather bound volumes, more of interest for their appearance than for their content. The first meeting of the Memorabilia Reference Group was held December 5, 1996. The aim of the group was to facilitate all actions required for the safekeeping of the Shire of Eltham memorabilia. Prepared for Nillumbik Shire Council by Samantha Westbrooke Pty Ltd in association with Peter Mills PhD, Architectural Historian and Roark Muhlen-Schilte, Archaeologist. Covers history of early market gardening in Eltham with the commencement of European settlement in the late 1830s. The site for the village of Eltham was surveyed in 1851 and the Township Plan shows that the property is made up of Lots 7 and 8 which were sold at auction in June 1852 to M. O'Shea. The history of the Bell Street property is closely tied to the West family from the 1860s to 1930s; the earliest rate books for Eltham show William West farming in El;tham in 1864. In the aerly 1930s ownership of the creek side was transferred from the west family to the Fabbro family who shortly afterwards were impaced by the 1934 Diamond Creek flooding. Guido Fabbro relocated the original West home further up the hill and built a new Italianate style modern home in situ. The Fabbro family farmed the property. In 1993/4 Eltham Council acquired the creek-side market garden blocks to the south of 2 Bell Street which was recconceived in 1998 as the Barak Bushland Reserve. The Fabbro house was demolished shortly after and the lots were sold to a developer in 1994. The new Eltham Library was opened 22 May 1994 and celebrates its 30th anniversay in 2024. This audio recording, presented by Harry Gilham, President of Eltham District Historical Society at the time of the opening is a summarised history of the Eltham Library service to 1994. Eltham Library Service 1930s - 1994 Originally collated by Harry Gilham, President, Eltham District Historical Society Inc (1993-2009) (edited 2022) In the Eltham township area, in the early 1930s, library books for adults were available from E J Andrew's newsagency in Main Road. In the newsagency come haberdashery, some shelves were set aside for a lending library of adults' books. In 1935, Mr & Mrs JC Rains purchased the newsagency and continued the lending service until the late 1940s. At this time the business was extended from haberdashery to sell ladies' and men's clothing. The library section was discontinued. In the 1930s a mobile book library was also run by a Mr Foster of Bible Street, Eltham. In the 1950s adult books were available from racks in the foyer of the Eltham Shire Offices which was then located beside the Eltham Hall on the comer of Arthur Street and Main Road. In the early 1950s a referendum of ratepayers was called to seek public opinion on the issue of raising money for a public library for which the rates would have to be increased - the motion was defeated. On 11 November 1965 Eltham Shire Council, in conjunction with the City of Heidelberg and the Shire of Diamond Valley, met to form the Heidelberg Regional Library Service. Eltham was represented by Councillors Charis Pelling and John Lewis. The first library service for the Shire of Eltham from this group came in the shape of a bookmobile van which had, amongst others, a central stopover near the Shillinglaw trees outside the newly opened Shire offices at 895 Main Road, the original site of Shillinglaw Cottage and the former Shillinglaw farm. Present-day Wingrove Park was another stopover and the many recorded requests for this service can be read as denoting the areas of population or gathering points at that period throughout the Shire. 1968 saw the Shire convert the ‘Brinkkotter’ house in Dudley Street to house both adult and children's books. This library was originally staffed from the City of Heidelberg Library and records of committee meetings range from borrowing Heidelberg's old library shelving to trying to increase the Government's subsidy to a dollar for dollar basis. Book loans in the period 1966-67 totalled 30,400 and the following year ran to 52,113. With 2 books plus 1 paperback the limit per person, it was overcrowded and unable to house the range of other services which had become common library stock. Planning to extend the Shire Offices by the addition of the south wing was an opportunity to re-house the Shire's Library. The opening of the library in the extension was carried out on 17th August 1971 by the Hon R J Hamer ED, MP, Chief Secretary of Victoria. Cr Geoffrey Dreverman officiated as the Shire President. The Heidelberg Regional Library Service continued until September 1985 when it disbanded. On 21 November 1985 the Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service was established. At that time Eltham was represented by Councillors Mary Grant and Robert Manuell. By 1987, over-crowding of the Eltham Library and an inability to house the range of other services yet again rose to prominence. At a Council meeting held on 1 June 1987, the Councillors supported a resolution which threatened to close the library on 30 September 1987. Council's frustration arose from yet another re-run of the annual State Government versus Council Library funding and records show first arose in Eltham Council in 1967 with the Government of 1he day. After prolonged public anger and petitions the motion to close the library was rescinded in August 1987. Council, considering the community's concern, set up a ‘Library Review Working Party’ which a year later became the Library Occasional Committee with direct access to Council. This Committee investigated the workings of the 386 square metre library and found inadequate space for storage and display, lack of equipment, out-of-date furniture together with an increasing patronage which resulted in queues of borrowers becoming longer no matter when the library was open. Community consultation took the form of 1,000 questionnaires sent to users and non-users along with noticeboard reminders of what was planned. Council developed a strategy to set aside capital funds from 1988 on an annual basis so that preliminary planning and consultative expenses could be met, and construction could be completed early 1997. The Committee visited metropolitan libraries which were catering for a similar population as was projected for Eltham. Australia-wide Federal Government funding grants under the Local Capital Works Program became available from October 1992 for community projects endorsed by local Councils. The Eltham Council submitted a proposal, based on library findings and requirements accumulated by the Library Occasional Committee, to the Federal Grants Committee to build a new Eltham Library. The Federal Grants Committee supported the funding request allowing commencement of the library project three years earlier than planned. With finance finalised, the Council set up its Eltham Library Re-development Special Committee which was given the task of overseeing what could be the last major expansion of the Shire's Library Service as Eltham's population nears its projected maximum. The new library was designed by Gregory Burgess and Peter Ryan of Gregory Burgess Pty Ltd. Construction of the library commenced in 1993 and was officially opened May 22nd, 1994. The library building was designed to reflect its parkland setting. External features include: the roof which includes interesting aspects when viewed from Main Road; verandahs which provide ramp access and give a sheltered entrance to the building; walls which feature locally made mudbricks, conventional bricks and copper panels; and space for an outdoor courtyard/reading area which will be developed later. Internally there are several features. The building includes a foyer with a fireplace suitable for displays including artwork, a community multi-purpose room suitable for meetings or functions and an outdoor cafeteria. The ceilings are lined with Victorian Ash. The shapes for the ceiling give a free-flowing form to the building. Brush Box has been used for the circulation and information desks. The tree trunk columns are Grey lronbark from New South Wales. Arches and various-shaped windows add interest to the internal structure. The carpet design reflects the Eltham environment and compliments the natural colours and timbers used in the building. Tiles by artist Felix Bosari feature in the building and additional art by local artists added externally and internally to the building. Since 1994 the library has undergone a major extension to cater for children’s services and others. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. October Meeting (Newsletter No. 248, Oct. 2019) It was intended that Dr. Andrew Lemon AM would be our guest speaker at our last meeting on Wednesday 14th August 2019, to talk about Heritage Advocacy - the role of historical research and historical societies. Unfortunately, due to a clash of commitments Andrew apologised for not being able to attend and we are delighted he will now be our speaker at our next meeting on Wednesday 9th October. As mentioned in our last newsletter, this presentation was very well received when Andrew was the keynote speaker at the recent Regional Conference of the Association of Eastern Historical Societies. Andrew is an independent professional historian who has published many commissioned local and institutional histories since his first book, Box Hill, forty years ago. He has now written sixteen books, four of which have won prizes, on subjects ranging from local history, sport, education and biography. Andrew received his doctorate of letters from the University of Melbourne in 2004 because of the excellence of a body of work, not one single piece, as in a thesis.
