This photograph was given to Horace Lawson on the occasion of his retirement in 1918 as Town Clerk of Warrnambool. The photographs are of the Town Clerk, the Town Surveyor, the Mayor and Councillors in June 1918. The Mayor, William Swinton and the Town Clerk, Horace Lawson are in civic robes. Horace Lawson had a distinguished career as the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1893 to 1918 (which is actually 25 years, not 30 years as stated on the photograph). Lawson was a keen cyclist and a member of the Warrnambool Volunteer Army Corps. He left Warrnambool in 1918 to take up the position in Melbourne as Secretary of the Municipal Association of Victoria. The photographer, Arthur Jordan, working in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century, was well-known, particularly for his photographs of civic affairs. This photograph is of considerable interest as it concerns the retirement of Horace Lawson, an influential and highly-respected municipal officer in Warrnambool at a time of great growth in the town/city.This is a black and white photograph in a wooden frame with a heavy card inset and glass covering. This Association was founded in 1946 and continues today, providing umpires for football matches in the Warrnambool District including the Hampden Football League.This uniform came from a Collectables Shop in Fairy Street, Warrnambool but the original owner is unknown. This medallion was awarded by the Commissioners of the Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition to ten boys from the Kew Asylum who sent handmade items (basketware, matwork etc ) for display at the Education Court of the Exhibition. The Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, held in Warrnambool from December 1896 to March 1897, partly to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, was a signal event in Warrnambool's history, with one report suggesting that over 70,000 people attended the various activities held over these months. These included concerts, operas, displays, business stands, sporting events and competitions. The earliest surviving voice recordings made in Australia were produced in Warrnambool at this Exhibition and there were various other 'firsts'. The medallion awarded to the boys at the Asylum for the high quality of their work, was made by the Melboune firm of Stokes and Sons who had a stall and machinery at the Exhibition and made small souvenir Exhibition coins on the spot for visitors to buy. As well as the gold medallion the boys were also given by the Commissioners some small souvenirs to the total value of 12 shillings. This medallion is of great historical value as it is a precious and rare memento of the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, an important event in Warrnambool's history..1 A round gilt-bronze medallion with a bust image of Queen Victoria and lettering on one side and a laurel wreath and lettering on the other side .2 A square black box with a metal hinge and clasp. This suit was made to order in 1975 for Ted Henry at a Fletcher Jones factory, probably the one in Warrnambool. The other items were obtained at the same time. David Fletcher Jones began his business by opening shops in Liebig Street Warrnambool in the 1920s. His Man's Shop sold suits and overcoats and manufactured men's clothing on site. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and a factory was opened in Warrnambool in 1948. The Fletcher Jones and Staff Company expanded and became well known throughout Australia for the quality of its men's and women's clothing. The Company ceased business in 2011. The surname "Henry" is well known in Warrnambool and district. This poster has been produced as a saleable item by the firm of McCarron Bird & Co of Melbourne about 1900. This firm was founded in 1872 and is best known for its publication of the two-volume work, 'Victoria and its Metropolis' (1888). The poster was intended to be hung on a wall for decorative and advertising purposes. It contains four attractive lithographs of the towns, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Portland and Hamilton and a great number of advertisements and illustrations, some from Melbourne and the rest from the Westen District towns mentioned above. One Warrnambool advertisement is for the general merchant business of William Caffin in Kepler Street and two others are advertisements for the coastal ships, Flinders, Dawn and Casino which came into the port of Warrnambool. This cup, made in Melbourne, is a 1946 award for a table tennis competition in the Warrnambool district. The P.C.S.A. may stand for Presbyterian & Congregational Sports Association, with the trophy being won by the Congregational Church team. The donor’s initials, W.Y.M.C., may stand for Warrnambool Young Men’s Club. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 with a church opened in Liebig Street in 1864. This church was sold and a new one opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1979, after the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church, the Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army.This cup is of interest as an example of a Warrnambool sports trophy given over 70 years ago.This is a small silver cup mounted on a brown Bakelite base. This plaque comes from the Warrnambool SoundHouse building in Timor Street, Warrnambool. The Warrnambool SoundHouse was one of the Australian SoundHouses foundations which were established to promote music in schools. It was sponsored by Brash’s Music Store in Melbourne but when the Brash company ceased business in 1998 the funding for the Warrnambool SoundHouse stopped and the foundation closed. Thi plaque is retained as a memento of the Warrnambool SoundHouse foundation which promoted music in the local schools in the 1980s and 90s. This is a gold-coloured metal plaque with black printing. They include a search made of the title of this property in 1937 and information on later purchasers of the property. The first owner of this property was James Cust who purchased it in April 1853. James Cust (1815-1860) came from Ireland to Australia in 1841. From 1847 on he farmed first at Woodford and then moved into Warrnambool and began land speculating.. In 1856 his property was valued at £20,000 but by 1858 he was declared insolvent following the insolvency of his financial backer, William Bateman and his properties were sold. He died in 1860 following an accident at a Ballarat gold mine. Other notable Warrnambool identities who owned this property on Pertobe Road included Thomas King, Christopher Beattie, Thomas Goodall, William McMahon and Alan Lane.These documents are of interest as they detail the history of a property in Warrnambool up to the 1960s. These are souvenir medals of the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. This exhibition organised by a local committee under the chairmanship of the Mayor, Walter Hickford was one of the most important events in Warrnambool's history. It ran for three months and was said to have attracted 70000 visitors. It was held in Liebig Street and utilised both the civic centre buildings and temporary buildings erected for the event. It had several exhibition courts featuring art worksand business exhibition stands, competitions,entertainments and visiting experts in various fields. These medals were made at the exhibition at the stand of Stokes and Son. Visitors to the exhibition were able to get a gold silver or bronze medal made while they watched and the medal was then perforated ready to put on a watch chain or pendant. Thomas Stokes came to Australia in the 1850's and established a successful business in Melbourne manufacturing buttons, medals and tokens. The business was called Stokes and Son following a fire in 1893.These medals are of great significance as a memento of an important event in Warrnambool -The Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. The business was founded in 1661 and ceased operations in 1967. The picnic set belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) who was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in Warrnambool community affairs (Foundation President of Warrnmbool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee). Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, golf and bowls. He also had a motor car and this picnic set would have been used for family picnics. This picnic set is of considerable significance because: 1. It is a good example of the luxury picnic sets owned by more affluent people in the 1930s and 40s. 2. It has important local provenance as it belonged to Horace Holmes, a doctor associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular wooden box with a leather covering. It has metal hinges on the corners of the box and two two metal catches on the side with a leather belt and metal buckle on one of these catches with one leather belt missing on the other side. These leather straps were to attach the picnic box to the running board of the car. There are also two metal catches or locks on the front of the box. Inside the box there is a white lining with a plaited wickerwork insert containing spaces for the following: 1. large china container with a silver top 2. smaller metal container with a silver lid 3. small rectangular metal tin with a silver lid. This container still has some loose tea leaves inside 4. four china cups 5. two circular china dishes for jam and butter 6. four china saucers 7. one glass bottle with a silver top 8. one metal phial, silver-coloured 9. one amber-coloured glass bottle (probably not an original) 10. four nickel silver spoons 11. three metal forks 12. three white enamel plates, blue edged Numbers 10,11 and 12 are held in place by leather straps on the inside of the lid of the box 13. two loose metal straps 14. one metal kettle with a handle with cane strapping, a brass lid, a brass spout with an end chain and a metal inscription 15. This waistcoat was made for Mr Alan Vinnell by the Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop in 1946 and was worn by Mr Vinnell at his wedding in Lang Lang on 27/4/1946 to Miss Madge Ridgway. Alan was the son of Albert Vinnell and Ada Rose Wood. He attended school in Macarthur about 40 kilometres northwest of Warrnambool. The Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop was located at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets in Warrnambool. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street and in 1928 he moved to the Koroit/Liebig Streets intersection with his Man’s Shop. He manufactured men’s clothing on site. In 1931 a new set of two-storeyed buildings was erected on the site and Fletcher Jones moved into the building. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Raglan Parade, Warrnambool with a new company, Fletcher Jones and Staff established in 1951. This company became known Australia-wide, firstly for the production of men’s trousers, and later men’s and women’s clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company dissolved. This waistcoat is of historical interest as an example of the high quality work produced at the Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop in Warrnambool in the mid 1940s. The Fletcher Jones business became one of the most important ones in Warrnambool in the 20th century and the early 21st century.This is a sleeveless woollen waistcoat made of blue striped material with a black cotton backing. The back has two black cotton flaps with a metal buckle to allow for the tightening of the coat across the back. The inside is lined with a cream, yellow and grey striped cotton material. The waistcoat has one inside pocket with a button enclosure and four outside pockets. This book belonged to Robert Giles. He obtained it in 1914 and the bookseller was Mrs Tilly Rowan who was a well-known businesswoman in Warrnambool with a book shop and newsagency in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street. Robert Giles (1895-1967) was born in Wangoom and went to the Wangoom State School and the Warrnambool Agricultural High School. He served in World War One and worked at the State Savings Bank in Warrnambool from 1911 to 1921 (excluding war service). He later worked in banks in Koroit, other Victorian country districts and Melbourne and retired to Mailors Flat. He was married to Vera King and they had one child, Joyce Aurelin. A Warrnambool branch of the Savings Bank was opened in Warrnambool in 1859 and it moved into a new building in Timor Street in 1885. (This building in now part of the Archie Graham Senior Citizens’ Centre). The State Savings Bank became the State Bank of Victoria in 1980 and in 1990 was subsumed into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This book is retained because it belonged to Robert Giles who lived in the Warrnambool area for part of his life and who worked at the State Savings Bank in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 408 pages. The cover is red with a gold-coloured image of a horse and a mounted policeman on the front cover and gold printing on the spine. This book, written by Inspector Robert Haldane, details the history of the Police Force in Victoria up to the late 20th century. The history of the Police Force is mirrored in the history of the police presence in Warrnambool since the early days of settlement. One important ex-Warrnambool policemen featured in the book is Thomas O’Callaghan, an Inspector of Police in Warrnambool in the 1880s and the Chief Commissioner of Police from 1902 to 1913.This item is of interest firstly as a book giving comprehensive details on the history of the Victorian Police Force and secondly as book containing information on police members who were connected with the history of Warrnambool. .1 This is a hard cover book of 372 pages with a blue cover and silver printing on the spine.
