Dross Drossou established a cordial factory in Orbost in the 1930s. He sold his cordial manufacturing business to Phillips and Stone, a Bairnsdale company, in 1948. Glass bottles were refillable until the 1960s, creating a demand for their collection and onsale back to beverage manufacturers via ‘bottle merchants’. A deposit on the bottles was added to all sales as they left the factory. The returned bottles were washed and the old label removed. The inside was cleaned by pushing the bottle onto a revolving brush. The reusing of the bottles went on until the bottle was broken or the top became chipped. The first owner, who also had land locally, was Frederick Nichols (1833-1904). The Buxton Hotel is located directly opposite the General Store. It was fronted with two huge oak trees and bordered and backed by large pine trees. It was a weatherboard structure with a painted corrugated iron roof. Booklet, The Ballarat Historian: Journal of the Ballarat Historical Society - The History of Mt Clear High School, June 1983
The Mt Clear Technical High School was an amalgamation of several schools. The Ballarat Junior Technical School was started in 1913 to bridge the gap between primary schools and senior technical colleges at the old Dana Street National School under the administration of the School of Mines. The Ballarat Girls Technical School which was commenced in 1951 and the Girls High School which can be traced back to 1874, both had several incarnations before joining together. The Mt Clear Technical School separated from the School of Mines in January 1977 and was officially opened on 10th October 1981.Called 'A marriage of convenience', this 7 page, A4 booklet is stapled at the top left hand corner and is a photocopy of the vol.1, no.9 issue of The Ballarat Historian. It contains a history of the the schools in Ballarat which eventually merged and formed on the completion of the buildings in 1981, the Mt Clear Technical High School. It was written by J A Chisholm who was the Jnr. Vice-President of the Ballarat Historical Society. It was listed as Vol.1, No.9 as the Journal of the Ballarat Historical Society.ballarat historical society, journal of the ballarat historical society, the ballarat historian, j a chisholm, mount clear technical high school, mount clear high school, jack chisholm, j.a. chisholm, mt clear -

Ring pessary associated with Dr Frank Forster
This was one of the older types of ring pessary and resembles a watch spring pessary. They were made in a wide variety of sizes and thicknesses, and came either just as a ring or with a perforated indian rubber septum. A new type of ring pessary was later made which improved on this design. Whereas this hard rubber/vulcanite style pressed on the vaginal wall, the new style instead provided a soft cushion thanks to a patent fluid filled design. This meant that the pessary did not collapse in the way air filled pessaries did, and meant that the pessary could remain in place for a much longer period without discomfort to the patient.Circular pessary made of black vulcanite. intrauterine device, pessary -

The funeral train Puffing Billy ran to farewell their Board chairman and Society Treasurer Graeme Breydon. G42 hauled a long train of passenger cars to Gembrook, and tucked in behind the loco was an NQR open wagon carrying Graeme's coffin. And in what is an old British tradition, the top layer of coal in the bunker was painted white (although the resulting smoke was still fairly black!). Two photos are attached. Caption reads: "This is the Rutherglen police station, which was described as a 'disgrace' at Rutherglen Shire Council's meeting last Friday. Walls of the tiny station are riddled with white ants and the two lock-ups at the rear are primitive. The station is said to be more than 80 years old and entirely out of character with its surroundings -- the pleasant civic square. The condition of the buildings will be brought to the attention of the Victorian Police Commissioner and Public Works Department." The two lock-ups mentioned are now (2018) property of the Rutherglen Historical Society, and are located at the back of the Museum awaiting renovations to make them into a display.Black and white photocopy, that seems to have been from a newspaper article, showing a photograph of a small cottage that served as a police station in Rutherglen for some years.
