The new State Electricity Commission construction camp at the head of the Kiewa Valley was for workmen on the second power station in the project expected to be the most modern and best equipped in Australia… In contrast to the early Kiewa days of horses and canvas tents, the new camp, with its modern amenities, compared favourably with any country town. Administration of the Kiewa Scheme was moved from Tawonga to Mount Beauty in 1946. The first house in Mount Beauty, in Hollonds Street, was occupied by the co-op store manager from November 1946. The new Mess Hall at Mt Beauty was opened with much ceremony in early November 1946. The houses up to Nelse street were erected from 1946 onward and then the township was extended beyond Nelse Street in 1950. The workmen's camp was enlarged in 1950 to the extent of providing accommodation for a total of 1,200.Shows early construction in the town of Mt. The Hallford truck was made by J & E Hall, of Dartford, England, whose business commenced in 1785. In 1926 the Fisher family of Mongan's Bridge took delivery of the 1923 Hallford truck which was used on the farm to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory in Tangambalanga. In 1967, the truck was sold to Mr Greg Bedstead and other members of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for the KVHS who reimbursed them at a later date. The truck was housed at the Butter Factory for many years and was paraded on special occasions.This truck was used to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory from the Fisher family's dairy farm at Mongan's Bridge. At other times a tyre was removed and a belt attached to run a chaff cutter. This truck has historical significance as it is presentative of vehicles which were used by farmers to transport cream to the butter factories by a local family. Furthermore, it has social significance as KVHS members combined their finances to purchase this truck so it would be part of our collection. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Much of the temporary accommodation that housed groups such as the Albion Quarrying Company were in the area now under water.This group of photographs are a pictorial record of the early history of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, the people who worked in the background supplying administrative support and the workers and their families. In December of 1939 the excavation of a diversion tunnel was commenced to divert water from the East Kiewa River to allow construction of the dam wall. This was completed in February 1940. Lewis Construction Co. had the contract with excavation starting in February and the first batch of concrete placed in September. In 1942 the S.E.C. took over the construction and the wall was completed in March, 1944. Type of construction: reinforced concrete slab buttress.Of historical importance in the Kiewa area as it shows the form work and preparation necessary before the pouring of concrete for the first dam in the hydro electric scheme. The SECV had chalets, cafes, mess halls and tea rooms all over Victoria including their construction sites. The SECV had a stores system which purchased thousands of sets of crockery & cutlery for use by personnel. there was a system of chefs, cooks, tea persons etc. to supply food and beverages to the workers. 1921 signified the year the SECV was formed.This dinner plate was used at one of the sites on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which began construction in 1938 and concluded in 1961. 11 of the 13 photos were taken by Tor Holth and used in his book "Cattlemen of the High Country" first published in 1980. Co writer was Jane Holth (Barnaby). Of the other two photos, one was taken by C. Roper (2 old gentlemen of the High Plains) and the other (Fred Roper, Tom Hollonds, Kyran Marum - early cattlemen) unknown photographer. The book tells the story of the lives of the mountain cattlemen of Victoria's high country, the harsh conditions and challenges they faced when they mustered their cattle before winter to bring them down to lower pastures. Huts were built of any materials available and were scattered about the high plains to provide shelter from the elements. Some are still standing despite the many bushfires that have ravaged the area.The photographs are of historic significance as they are of early pioneers in the cattle industry in the Kiewa Valley. The huts are of significant interest as they show different types of construction and materials as does the cattle yard at Bogong Jack's. The township of Mt. Beauty was built to provide family accommodation for personnel working on the construction of the Kiewa Scheme. construction commenced in 1946. Photo 1 is looking towards the corner of Lakeside Ave. and Kiewa Crescent. The Post Office is on the corner and the original building housing the Co op store was in Kiewa Crescent. Photo 2 is taken at a later date as the garden in front of the Post Office is well established. The Community Centre is centre left of the photo and the back buildings are the staff accommodation called "The Chalet". Photo 3. Farming country taken from Wallacedale. The Wallaces were one of he early farming families in the Kiewa Valley. Photo 4. This photo is of Junction Camp at Bogong Village and was commenced late in 1939 and by 1940 accommodated 96 men who were engaged in work on Junction Dam. Sleeping accommodation was provided in hutments, each of four rooms, each room being approx. 12 feet by 10 feet and provided for the accommodation of 2 men. This camp remained in use until November 1962.These photos have both historical and social significance. They show the type of accommodation available for workers during the construction of the SEC Kiewa Hydro Scheme as well as early streetscape views of Mt. Beauty. The photographic developers were used to develop plates, films and lantern slides. They had to be mixed as per instructions on the bottles and boxes. Students attended Sunday School at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church and were given prizes. The students included those aged between 8 and 12 years and included boys and girls. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. Clag was used in homes, schools and offices for sticking mostly paper and cardboard together. It was applied with a brush. In later years adhesives became varied with chemicals being combined enabling many different surfaces to be stuck together. Clag is a very basic form of adhesive.Clear glass round bottle gradually tapering from base to opening. It has an orange and white label with blue and white writing and titled 'Clag'. This bowl was used by the SECV in their mess rooms for workers during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The imprint of the year '1921' was to identify the year that the SECV was formed which relieved the private VHEC (Victorian Hydro-Electric Company). As the scheme was of such a huge scope, isolated and time consuming nature, the feeding of its workers was quite demanding of cutlery and crockery. (See more KVHS 0113)This bowl was used by SECV workers working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (1938 - 1961) in camps and mess halls and at the Mt Beauty chalet. (See more KVHS 0113)This item is a white ceramic State Electricity Commission of Victoria bowl. It is made in England and is of strong and durable ceramic. The 5 mm thickness of the ceramic suggests this bowl (cereal / soup) belongs to a commercial kitchen environment and not domestic. The indent bottom of the bowl is 5 mm deep with a side curvature ratio of 2:5. The ceramic is glazed to a commercial standard (workers' mess). This is a pennant from the Warrnambool District Bowls Association. This association is a division of the West Coast Bowls Association and the members are the Bowls Clubs of Dennington, Koroit, Lawn Tennis Club, Mortlake, Terang, Port Fairy, Timboon, Warrnambool and City Memorial. This pennant was awarded for the premiers of 1975/76 and, as the pennant came from St.John’s Bowls Club (Presbyterian Church Warrnambool) it is presumed that this club was the winner of this pennant. St. John’s Bowls Club, in Princess Street, Warrnambool, was prominent in the 20th century but has now been disbanded (early 21st century) with the land sold in 2014. The maker of the flag, Evan Evans Pty Ltd, is a well-known Australian flag-making business. It was founded in 1877 and a member of the family was a co-designer of the Australian flag in 1901. This pennant is of some interest as it was awarded by the Warrnambool District Bowls Association to St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. As the St. John’s Club no longer exists it is an important memento of this Warrnambool sports club. Bowls is a popular sport in Warrnambool. This is a large triangular-shaped pennant from the Warrnambool District Bowls Association (1975-6). It is a white cloth pennant made in two sections with stitched hems on the edges and through the centre. The side holding the cord is made of thicker folded cloth with a white plaited cord inserted. The lettering is made of blue cloth and machine stitched on to the pennant. The material is nylon and wool. The business of Kitchen and Sons began in 1856 when John Kitchen began to make tallow candles in their backyard in Emerald Hill but had to move two years later due to it being an offensive trade. Bad luck plagued them again after two years when fire destroyed their premises. However after rebuilding , the expanded and moved to Footscray ten years later. Over the next 30years the business expanded further employing upwards of 300 people and became one of the leading manufacturers of soaps, candles and associated products in Australia and New Zealand. They were makers of long standing brands such as Velvet soap and Solvol and by the mid 1920's were employing about 1400 people. It was around this time that they merged with the Lever Co of Sydney and after absorption of other soap companies over the next 40 years , the company became known as Lever & Kitchen in 1962. This box contained gift soaps and probably belongs to the period prior to 1924. Miss C M Trigg of Wangoom was the owner. Fletcher Jones Clothing Factory was a key industry in Warrnambool from 1948 to its closure in 2005. The business was founded by David Fletcher Jones (1897-1977), a clothing manufacturer and retailer who worked as a hawker in the Western District following service with the A.I.F. in World War One. In 1924 Fletcher Jones opened three shops in Liebig Street selling men’s wear, hosiery and linen and operating a small tailoring business. He moved his shop to another location in Liebig Street and began to concentrate on men’s trousers production. In 1946 he opened a shop in Collins Street in Melbourne and eventually had stores and factories all over Australia. In Warrnambool he opened his factory at Pleasant Hill in Flaxman Street in 1948 and became a major Warrnambool employer, with over 1000 employees at one time. He transformed his business into a co-operative, with the name, ‘Fletcher Jones and Staff’ registered in 1947. The business diversified into other ranges of clothing for men and women but failed to compete with cheaper overseas clothing imports and the factory and shops were closed in the early 21st century. 001143.1 Project Book. This poster has been produced as a saleable item by the firm of McCarron Bird & Co of Melbourne about 1900. This firm was founded in 1872 and is best known for its publication of the two-volume work, 'Victoria and its Metropolis' (1888). The poster was intended to be hung on a wall for decorative and advertising purposes. It contains four attractive lithographs of the towns, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Portland and Hamilton and a great number of advertisements and illustrations, some from Melbourne and the rest from the Westen District towns mentioned above. One Warrnambool advertisement is for the general merchant business of William Caffin in Kepler Street and two others are advertisements for the coastal ships, Flinders, Dawn and Casino which came into the port of Warrnambool. This poster has local historical significance as it has a descriptive drawing of the town of Warrnambool about 1900 and shows the buildings that were existing at that time.This is a cream-coloured sheet of paper with a coloured centre piece showing the title of the poster, four coloured lithographs of Western Victorian towns and advertisements printed and illustrated in black and white.
