Transcript of two articles in the Ballarat Star about horse tram accidents. 1 - item dated 5/9/1894 about a runaway of two harnessed horses from the Sturt St terminus at Grenville St. One of the horses was finally stopped at the Miners' Racecourse. Sign with equal red bands at top and bottom, white band with letters "HAIL CARS HERE" on both sides to indicate to drivers a request stop, that is, the intending passenger had to indicate or hail the oncoming tram for it to stop and allow them to board. The same sign was used for the same purpose in Melbourne. Has three holes for screws on the upstand or folded section. See item 7395 for a "CARS STOP HERE" version. The site on the north side of High Street, Kew, on the corner of Disraeli Street is now the location of the Kew Recreation Centre. The current (as of 2020) swimming pool was formerly situated further west on the site but was relocated closer to Disraeli Street during the 1980s. Previously, this was the site of a Kew Council depot, and before that a horse tram shed. The horse tram (1887-1914) ran from the Victoria Street Bridge to the entrance of the Boroondara General Cemetery. Rusted horse shoe, excavated from the site of the Kew Recreation Centre on the corner of High and Disraeli Streets in Kew. The shoe was donated by Mr Poulter, City Engineer, City of Kew. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s.
