The coloured photograph shows the Lighthouse Keepers' Quarters at Flagstaff Hill, Warrnambool. The building was erected in the 1850s on Middle Island, Lady Bay. It was relocated to its current location in the late 1870s along with the two lighthouses, the chart room and the privy. The Warrnambool City Council replaced the iron roof on the cottage in the 1970s and further work has since been carried out. The picture shows the poor condition of the stonework on the right hand side of the cottage. After the cottage ceased to be used by lighthouse keepers, it was rented out by various organisations and later became disused. The Historical Society requested the re-connection of power. The right hand side of the cottage was repurposed for use by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. in the 2020s it was restored and fitted out as the Alexander Farncombe room, which is used for temporary exhibitions. This photograph, a print, is one of a set of five that show the site of Flagstaff Hill. It is presumed to have been taken by John Lindsay, Founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. One of the photographs in the set has the pencil inscription "Photo J Lindsay". It was taken in the early 1970s during the initial stages of the development of Flagstaff Hill as a Museum and Maritime Village. The photographs belonged to the donor's grandparents, who lived in the Warrnambool district of Allansford/Naringal. The photograph is a record of the Lighthouse Keepers' Quarters at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village before its development and opening in 1975. It shows the condition of the building at the time and some of the recent re-roofing. This type of steam boiler is called a Scotch Marine boiler. It was manufactured in Dordrecht, Netherlands, possibly in 1918 by 'DeMan & Teveldhuis'. The only history that we have was that the boiler was found in an unknown paddock. It had an attached tag labelled "Melbourne Steam Club" but never collected by them. It was eventually brought to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village for display.This boiler is an example of equipment used for a steam driven machine.Boiler, Scotch Marine Boiler design, cylindrical shape with rivets on the enclosed end, pipe fittings on top and apertures and open pipe ends on the other end.. This photograph of the site of the "Old Barn" (now Pope Place Greensborough) was taken in 2013 to show changes over 40 years, based on Ron Reynold’s sketches in the 1973 publication “Greensborough and Greenhills” published by Cypress Books. AGL took over the operation of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and constructed the 'Bogong Power Development Project. This involved the construction of a new underground Hydro Electric Power Station on AGL Hydro's Junction Dam regulating pondage near Bogong village in Vctoria's High country. Sawbridgeworth was built in 1887 by Arthur Wiseman. The house was named after the little English village in Hertfordshire where the Wisemans had lived for hundreds of years. Arthur's brother, Albert, built his mansion, called Ashleigh, which also fronted Widford Street. It has only a small permanent population but in the summertime it comes alive with tourists who enjoy the restaurants and cafes that line waterfront. The late Robert Ulmann (1927-1999) was a well-known local Warrnambool artist, creating murals, sculptures and art works. The sculpture 'Lady in the Wind' was presented to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Dr Ivor (Ivor Philip Quentin Scott 16-08/1928 - 1/11/2016) and his wife Deirdre Scott (dec.). This sculpture is significant for being a creation of Robert Ulmann, well known local Warrnambool artist. The sculpture titled "Lady in the Wind" by Robert Ulmann. Subject is a robed woman moving forward, long hair streaming behind her, clutching fabric of skirt in each hand. Created in 1975. Made of Mount Gambier stone. Plaque describing the sculpture is on a nearby wall. This book was published in 2017 to mark the centenary of the Warrnambool sub branch of the Returned Services League of Australia. It was produced by Avis Quarrell herself a world war 2 servicewoman and well known in the Warrnambool district for her photography, historical writing and involvement with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. The Warrnambool R.S.L. was established in 1917 and the War Memorial was erected in 1926. The Warrnambool R.S.L. is one of the oldest in Australia and this book records its history at the time of its centenary.This is a soft cover book of 100 pages . Marie Lion migrated with her sister, Berthe Mouchette and her husband in 1885. Berthe established an art school in the city. After the death of her husband the sisters purchased a school, Oberwyl, in St Kilda in 1885. The school was later one of the LHLG schools. Berthe was the founder of the Alliance Française of Melbourne in 1890. With the Great Depression, the sisters had to sell Oberwyl and moved to Adelaide. They returned to France during WWI to nurse wounded soldiers. And returned to Adelaide in 1916 after Marie contracted an infection. She was the South Australia representative of the "Société d’assistance maternelle et infantile". After the end of the war a number of French villages were ‘adopted’ by cities in Australia. Dernancourt, a small village in the Somme was adopted by Adelaide, and Mme Mouchette and Mme Lion worked to raise funds to help in the rebuilding of the almost completely destroyed town.The picture shows the link with the French community. Ethel and her sister Frederica Godfrey could speak French and were well acquainted with the members of this community: Charlotte Crivelli for example. Holmes Family WW1 memorabilia Kemmel village is around six miles south-west of Ypres. Located just to the north of the village centre is Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery. The cemetery was established early in the war, in December 1914, taking its name from Kemmel Chateau which stood to the rear of the cemetery location. The chateau at certain stages in the war housed an Advanced Dressing Station (ADS), and the cemetery continued to be used until March 1918, when Kemmel was taken by the Germans. Although it was retaken later on that year, both the cemetery and the chateau suffered from shelling with the chateau being destroyed. In total there are 1,135 First World War soldiers buried here, all but three being identified. A book about the fighting around the French village of Pozieres in 1916. Many of the early legatees fought on the Western Front and some, including founder Stan Savige, fought at Pozieres. There is a photo in the book of Brigadier-General Gellibrand and his staff, including Savige, eating breakfast in a shell hole. Back in Australia after the war Gellibrand inspired Savige to found a club like the Remembrance Club he had founded in Hobart. Thus Savige founded Legacy. Speeches by Legatees Kemsley and Armstrong in later years showed they had also fought in the Pozieres area. Some research has shown: The fighting around Pozières was part of the brave actions of the Australians during the battle of the Somme from July 1916. Between 23 July and 5 August 1916, the Australian 1st and 2nd Divisions captured Pozières village and Pozières heights, a ridge 500 metres east of the village. The 4th Division then continued the attack north along the ridge, the Australians in ten days of continuous action reached Mouquet Farm. The farm resisted capture until 26 September 1916. In less than seven weeks in the fighting at Pozières and Mouquet Farm three Australian divisions suffered 23,000 casualties. Of these, 6,800 men were killed or died of wounds. Invented by a member of the Abbott family of Bendigo, scalebuoys came in various sizes and had a variety of uses such as the mining industry to prevent scale build up in boilers, automotive for car radiators and domestic for water purification. Its essential part is a sealed glass bulb containing a small amount of mercury and a combination of gases.This particular variety was made to be connected to a water tap with a screw attachment and a small outlet pipe. Scalebuoy sent to Alan Cowling from work colleague, Pat Curran in Tasmania. Pat Curran was working as the CEO of a retirement village and found the scalebuoys in the equipment there. Noting the Bendigo manufacturing logo, he decided to send it to Alan. The original owner of the scalebuoys is unknown.sciences, instruments - general, scalebuoy

The Old Colonists' Association Ballarat Inc. is a not for profit charitable organisation providing accommodation for elderly people. It manages a 27 Home retirement village at Charles Anderson Grove Ballarat. Accommodation is offered at significantly below market rates. It has been providing low cost accommodation to the elderly since the 1920s. The Association Council overseas the running of this facility on a voluntary basis. OLD COLONISTS' ASSOCIATION OF BALLARAT. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) BALLARAT, WEDNESDAY. This association, which was founded in August, 1883, and at first known as the Old Identities' Association, now has a roll of 450 members. The objects of the association are "to aid and assist indigent or suffering old colonists ; to raise a fund, by the voluntary subscriptions of the members and the aid of outside donations, for the purpose of relieving members in sickness and old age; for assisting those in extreme distress, to provide the shelter of a home for old and indigent pioneers of the gold fields, their widows, or anyone connected with the association, and in the event of the death of any member to have his remains decently buried, the association defraying the expenses of the funeral (providing that no funds or property are left by the deceased), and to attend the funeral if so desired by the relatives." The qualifications for member ship are good character and repute, and residence in the colonies for a quarter of a century. For some time the association had no property except the regular subscriptions, but about a year ago they obtained from the Minister of Lands the grant of a very valuable block of land in Lydiard-street, the Crown grant of which they received last week. This block has a frontage of 66ft to Lydiard street, worth at least £100 a foot. The ground was given to the association as a site for them to build a hall upon, and with so valuable an asset they had no difficulty in borrowing at 7 per cent, enough money to construct a hall. For revenue purposes the ground floor of the building has been made into four shops, and the rental from these, judging from the rentals of shops in the vicinity, will not only pay all the interest on the borrowed money, but over £200 a year towards clearing off the principal. The officers of the association are Messrs J. P. Murray, President; J. W. Graham and T. Stoddart, vice presidents; D. Fern, treasurer; and J. Fraser, secretary. The Old Colonists' Hall is an elegant looking building in Lydiard-street, lying between the newly-opened mining exchange and the Commercial Club house, and a few doors north of the Post Office. The style of the facade is classic. The lower portion of the front is constructed of Waurn Ponds stone, forming piers, and the upper portion of brick and cement, the background being tuckpointed. The centre bay is carried by two three quarter columns with Ionic cups, which support a pediment on which is set a cast of the Ballarat coat of arms. The four other bays are supported by pilasters with Corinthian caps mid partly fluted. The entrance is through a spacious circular headed doorway, the keystone of the arch of which bears a sculptured head, in marble, representing that of the president of the Old Colonists' Association here, Mr. John P. Murray. An ample vestibule leads to a wide stone staircase which ends at a spacious landing. The landing has a dome over the centre, with cornice and enrichments, and is lighted from above. The walls round the landing are panelled with marble slabs, which are to be appropriately inscribed in the future. On the first door are the rooms appropriated to the association. The principal of these is a hall 44ft x 33ft and 17ft high. This room is well ventilated and lighted from the back of the building with large windows, and the walls are finished with Keene's cement. The other rooms are committee room, 14ft x 16ft; secretary's, 14ft x 17ft, 6in; kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, &c. The front portion of the first floor is arranged so that it may be let for offices, or utilised for club purposes. Suitable provision has been made throughout for lighting, ventilation, and means of egress. The architect for the edifice is Mr A. G. Legge, of this city, and the contractors are Messrs. Whitelaw and Atkinson, Irving and Glover, Reynolds, and J. Donaldson. The total cost of the building when completed, which will be in a few weeks, will be about £4,000. Jim Keogh owned Lot 7 of the Village Settlement. When the new CRB road went through c1920 his block was cut through leaving a small triangle of land on the high side of the CRB road. A group of British lancers moving through a village in France in 1917. For much of the war the British High Command kept immense reserves of cavalry behind the front line in the belief they could exploit successful thrusts by infantry into enemy lines. Pitted against the heavy artillery and the elaborately fortified trenches that typified the First World War, horses proved next to useless. Captain Cook's Cottage was dismantled in his village in England and rebuilt in Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens in the 1930s. Since then it has been an attraction for many visitors although there is little relationship between Captain Cook as he never set foot anywhere in Victoria. The couple in the photograph are Ioulia and George Raftopoulos (Klapatsouras) who were the parents of Effie Cominos and Aspasia (Sia) Koutsouvelis. Ioulia was from the village of Stavros and George from Frikes. They arrived in Australia from Ithaca in the 1920s and settled in Park Street Brunswick. Following George's death moved to Cromwell Road South Yarra close to her daughter Effie. A scanned studio photograph mounted on a brown board of a smartly dressed man and lady. The photo is taken at Marmaka beach, located in northern Ithaca near the seaside village of Frikes. Marmaka is known for its crystal clear waters and white pebbles. It was a favourite spot for locals to picnic and was usually reached by boat. A marsh located behind the beach was in the past used for mud bathing. The Battle of Amiens, also known as the Third Battle of Picardy (French: 3ème Bataille de Picardie), was the opening phase of the Allied offensive which began on 8 August 1918, later known as the Hundred Days Offensive, that ultimately led to the end of the First World War.By the end of August 8—dubbed “the black day of the German army” by Ludendorff—the Allies had penetrated German lines around the Somme with a gap some 15 miles long. Of the 27, 000 German casualties on August 8, an unprecedented proportion—12,000—had surrendered to the enemy.
