The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. While most family members settled in Victoria from 1834, others remained in England and in Tasmania. The daguerreotype was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.Members of the extended Henty family were notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Stephen George Henty's family lived at 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District lived in his final years at 'Field Place', Kew. Numerous members of the Henty family are buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Three quarter length seated studio portrait of Elizabeth Margaret (Milligan) Gaunt, taken using the daguerreotype photographic process, and encased in a standard daguerreotype frame made of tooled leather, velvet and gilt metal. Margaret Gaunt is dressed in a pale silk dress, typical of the 1860s, with a buttoned bodice and wide sleeves. She appears to be holding a book in her right hand. The sitter was the half sister of Mary Ann Lawrence (1821-81), the wife of Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' and 'Field Place', Kew. She married Charles Gaunt (1842-1916) at St John's Church of England, Launceston in 1868. Companion Heaters Pty Ltd was registered in May 1941, with headquarters at 450 Collins Street Melbourne. Using a Swedish design, this blow torch is a number 42, with a kerosene capacity of 1 pint (600ml)A rusted and blackened cylinder nine centimetres diameter, 11 centimetres high. A two centimetre diameter, nine centimetre long metal handle is attached vertically on an angle six centimetres from the cylinder at the bottom and three centimetres at the top. A four centimetre diameter, 12 centimetre long blow torch is attached to the top of the cylinder and secured with a one and a half wide metal strap. The top of the cylinder also has a two centimetre filling cap and a one and a half centimetre diameter pump which is six centimeters long. Advised by Donor that Jack was a "tram employee" between 1919 and 1922, a Gripman - 1924 - 1925 and a Motorman 1928 - 1931. After that he was a signalman. Issac Abraham was born in Ballarat in 1864. His pawnbroker shop was built in 1822. It sold Gold buying, pawnbroker, jewellery, sporting goods, footwear, and clothing. The traditional symbols of the pawnbroker, the three balls or spheres, date back to the Medici family of Florence who slayed a giant using three bags of rocks. The three-ball symbol became the family crest and since the Medicis were so successful in the financial, banking, and moneylending industries, other money lenders and eventually pawnbrokers also adopted the symbol. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905, the daughter of John and Annie (nee Cameron) Gilbert. She had seven sisters and one brother. Four siblings died at a young age. She died in 1989 aged 84. .She was a teacher historian loved and respected by her family and the wider community. Mary Gilbert was not only the founder of the Orbost Historical Society and Museum but was a teacher at bhe Orbost High School for many years. She contributed much to the community as she was involved in so many aspects of it. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. This cask bung came from the brewery of Sheldrick and Co. The New Brewery (Warrnambool), founded by Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price as partners in a company, was situated at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets. It was known as Sheldrick and Co. and operated from 1868 to 1922 with John McGee and Company running the business after 1894. In 1922 the business was sold to Ballarat, Melbourne Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries. The casks, used for wine and spirits, were in 1892 cleaned by steam and a lifting device was used to transport the casks from the cellars to the delivery wagons. This is a most significant item as one with a clear provenance and used in the brewery business of Sheldrick and Co., a major industry in Warrnambool in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is an example of the equipment use in the brewery business more than a 100 years ago. This is circular cask bung or stopper with the outer shell made of brass and the stopper insert made of cork. There is a screw thread on the metal. Both the brass and the cork are slightly worn.Inscribed on the metal:‘Sheldrick & Co. Warrnambool’sheldrick and co., sheldrick’s brewery

Warrnambool, established in 1847, became a Municipality in 1856, a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1883 and a City in 1918. This bottle opener has most probably been produced by the City of Warrnambool for promotional purposes and may have been given as gifts to notable visitors. The logo used is a version of the original ‘By These We Flourish’ seal which was first adopted by the Council in 1856. On the top portion is the Royal Coat of Arms. On the lower section is a sailing ship and a sheaf of wheat. The seal was designed by John Macdonald, a local schoolteacher and auctioneer. This bottle opener is of some interest as a promotional item produced for the Warrnambool City Council. It may be useful for display. This is a bottle opener made of electro-plated nickel silver. It has a badge with blue, white and gold enamelling with the old logo of the City of Warrnambool. This is a school reader used in the 1890s by Maggie Glasgow at Wangoom State School. This school opened in 1865 on the Warrnambool/ Wangoom Road as a Common School but it is now closed. Maggie Glasgow is probably Margaret Glasgow (1880-1954), the daughter of John and Esther Glasgow who were dairy farmers and cheese makers at Blackwood Hill, Wangoom. Jean Glasgow was the daughter of William and Isabella Glasgow who lived in the same area. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has in its collection examples of the Glasgow butter moulds. This book is of interest as an early school reader for Victorian children. Used in the 1890s this book has some Australian content. The Glasgow children that used this book are members of the Glasgow families important at the turn of the 19th century as cheese makers in the Warrnambool district. This is a hard cover book of 400 pages. Several pages are missing. The cover is dark blue with ornamental patterning on the front and embossed lettering. The text contains many black and white illustrations, some of which have been coloured in by hand. The inscriptions and other written material have been handwritten in black ink and pencil. Through the address on the box, this dress has a local connection. Miss Mavis Hedrick operated a dress salon at 162 Liebig St Warrnambool in the 1940's. Her parents lived at various houses in Warrnambool, including Skene, Spence and Princess Sts. She married John William Freeman in 1942 and left Warrnambool some time after that date. From wedding reports of the day it doesn't seem that this is Miss Hedrick's wedding dress. It seems more likely that it was purchased from her frock salon in Liebig St Warrnambool.While the owner and original wearer of this dress has eluded us, the dress has a strong link to Warrnambool through the original box with its identifying labels. The dress is very much in the style of the era of Miss Hedrick's dress shop..This cream silk wedding dress and slip was donated in original cardboard box with the address written in large letters on the front. The dress is cream silk with gold metallic trim in two lines across the bodice.There are silk covered buttons on the front and back of the bodice and it has a high rounded V neckline.It has long lily point sleeves .There is a side opening with hook and eye fastening.The skirt is cut on the cross and a small train flows from the back of the dress. A simple A line slip accompanies the dress. It has ribbon shoulder straps and the top is edged in a fine narrow lace. The large box is rectangular and grey in colour. The addressee's name is written in large lettering in black (possibly crayon) . A label is pasted to the top right hand corner. This plate came from St Ann’s School, Warrnambool. It was probably used in the boarding house section and may have been used for either soup or cereal. St Ann’s School opened in 1872 as St Mary’s Convent of Mercy School, Wyton, with the latter name being the name of the ex-John Ardlie house in which the school was initially established. There were eight foundation Sisters of Mercy. The name changed to St Ann’s Convent School in 1888 and in 1991 it amalgamated with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College to form Emmanuel College.This plate is an interesting memento of St. Ann’s School in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century.This is a round china plate with a green and yellow band around the inner edge of the plate. There is also the emblem of the school with the name and motto. The plate has a dip or recess in the middle. This glass has been issued to mark the end of the name of St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in 1990 and the school’s amalgamation with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College in 1991. This fragment is a piece of a cup that came from the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, Warrnambool, was opened in 1872 with John Tate as the first licensee. Two notable families associated with the Criterion Hotel were the Humm family, (late 19th and early 20th centuries) and the McGennan family ( from the late 1920s on) The name on the fragment is that of Theresa Lynch who was the licensee of the hotel from 1919 to 1926 and the owner for most of that time. The hotel was closed in 2008 and, following a fire, the building was demolished in 2013.This fragment is of interest as it is one of the few items we have that date from the time of Theresa Lynch and the Criterion Hotel.This is a curved piece, one half of a white china cup. The fragment has been broken and mended. This booklet was written by the Rev. J. E. (Eric) Owen in response to the campaign regarding the playing of Sunday sport in Warrnambool in the 1960s. The specific point of contention was the playing of football on Warrnambool City Council-managed grounds. The article written by the Rev. Owen concluded that there was nothing inherently wrong with the playing of Sunday sport. The Rev. Eric Owen served as the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Church in Warrnambool from December 1960 to 1965, dying in office in the May of 1965. Today Sunday sport, both organized and recreational, is an acceptable and common occurrence. This booklet is of interest as one written by a local Warrnambool person in the 1960s and as a memento of the time when the playing of Sunday sport was a contentious issue. This is a booklet of four pages. It has a pale blue cover with dark blue printing and a decorative edging around the printing. The pages are loose within the cover.

This small glass has been kept as a souvenir of the Warrnambool Criterion Hotel by a local resident, James Godfrey. The Criterion Hotel opened in Kepler Street, Warrnambool in April 1872. The first licensee was John Tate and the Humm family members of Woodford and the McGennan family of Warrnambool were prominent licensees and owners in the late 19th and 20th centuries. In the second half of the 20th century the hotel was an important centre in Warrnambool for live pop music. The hotel closed in 2008. The building was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and the remaining structure was demolished in 2013. This glass is significant because it has local provenance as a memento of a hotel in Warrnambool prominent in the local business world for 136 years and as an example of the souvenirs kept of this hotel by Warrnambool residents.This is a small clear glass tumbler with a heavy base and a slightly tapered neck and a circular open top. This notebook comes from the estates of the Misses Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Ethel and Arthur Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early Warrnambool settlers. The notebook has been used in 1954 as a visitors book and later as an address book and a notebook for recipes, messages etc. The significance of ‘A la Ronde’ or ‘In the Round’ on the opening page is not known. This notebook is of minor interest as a memento of the Misses Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool (20th century)This is a small notebook with a light brown cover with an ornamental gold edging around the front cover. The cover is somewhat stained. The pages are gilt-edged and contain handwritten signatures, names and addresses and notes. This book belonged to Rolf Crawley who was an engineer in the employ of the Shire of Warrnambool at the time he acquired this book. In 1926 he was the engineer/secretary for the Minhamite Shire, returning in 1935 to the Shire of Warrnambool as the engineer after the death of his father, John William Crawley Junior. Rolf retained this position until 1968. Rolf’s grandfather, father and uncle had all been engineers or shire secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire of Warrnambool which existed from 1863 to 1994. This book is retained as a memento of Rolf Crawley, the engineer with the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. This is a hard cover book of 626 pages. The cover is green with gold lettering on the spine. The edges of the cover are rubbed. The book contains a preface, 18 chapters of text and an appendix. The pages contain many diagrams and plans.
