Despite inclement weather, up to 500 people attended the opening of the Eltham-Hurstbridge railway on 25 June 1912. Local member of parliament Ewen Cameron and Victorian Premier William Watt were present. Agitation for a railway extension began in 1888 when a meeting was held at Arthurs Creek to press for the construction of a railway line from Heidelberg to Kinglake. The Chairman Mr Charles Draper said this was necessary because this was the best fruit growing district in Victoria. Mr Cameron M.P. pointed out that whatever route the line took it would have to follow the Diamond Valley from Eltham. At the same time another meeting was pressing for the line to be extended to Queenstown (St Andrews). However when detailed surveys were made it was discovered that the only possible route was to Hurstbridge because of the hills. In 1912 the railway was opened terminating at Hurstbridge. Sugarloaf Reservoir is situated on former farmland. This large water storage was completed in 1982 and serves Melbourne's northern suburbs. Within the visitor areas are two picnic grounds and other recreational facilities. Below its massive rock embankment is located the Winnecke Treatment Plan designed to purify its water before being piped into Melbourne. Skiing was started as an industry in the near by skiing village of Falls Creek, when many of the migrant workers who were employed by the Kiewa Hydro Scheme thought the near by snow fields would be a good place to ski. Gradually this village has developed into a major skiing resort during the Victorian winter. Many people who lived in Mt Beauty, Bogong Village or Falls Creek itself have either grown up snow skiing or spend their winters skiing. As a consequence Falls Creek developed a skiing community from this base and some skiers went onto represent Australia in skiing competitions and the Winter Olympic games due to their association with Falls Creek and or Mt Beauty. These skiis were used by Doug Mc Conville in the 1976 Winter Olympics. He crashed in his Olympic event. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme in the north east of Victoria. Mr R.M. Duncan prepared the notes. He was a member of the S.E.C. Kiewa Branch from 1949 - 1966. This book was commissioned by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. It consists of the early history of the Bogong High Plains and the origin of names of places and creeks in the area.This book was researched in 1968 by Mr R.M. Duncan who worked for the S.E.C. on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from 1949 to 1966. His sources were the Melbourne Public Library, the Victorian Historical Society, the North Eastern Victorian Historical Society and the Dept. of Crown Lands & Survey, Melbourne. The book is an accurate history of the Bogong High Plains given the available records at the time. The Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs. Mt Beauty Workman's Club was formed in 1945, re-built and opened in 1954 and again in 1962 and 1968. The Bowls club was founded in 1970 and later was affiliated with the Victorian Ladies' Bowling Association (VLBA) and the North Eastern District LBA in 1974. There were strict rules regarding the Bowlers' uniform.The Mt Beauty Workman's Club was built by the SECV in 1945 to service their employees on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. As Mt Beauty grew it became the centre of activity for residents including the Bowling Club. Geological Surveys of N.E. Goldfields Victoria included mines and tunnels. A resurvey of goldfields was necessary to re-assess economic possibilities using modern techniques and structural interpretation. It included an examination of a considerable surface area with maps and underground workings. Railways began in the 1850s and were privately owned and operated. Later they were taken over by the Victorian Government reaching a peak in the early 1940s.Steam trains were followed by electric trains with both running after the war in 1945.Bright was the closest station to the Kiewa Valley but road transport was used more often as the Kiewa Valley Highway was improved with the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Maternal, Infant, and Pre-school Welfare division of the Victorian Health Department published this booklet to assist expectant mothers with information regarding their confinement.Pre-natal information was important for expectant mothers especially those living in isolation eg. the farming community in the Kiewa Valley.Cream coloured booklet with 65 pages held by 2 staples. It has 10 chapters on pre-natal and 4 chapters on post natal. It is very comprehensive with a few black & white illustrations. The Lagoon Hotel was built in Kiewa in 1859 by James Lawson. It consisted of an inn and attached store. In marh\ch 1871, the Kiewa Post Office was opened at Lawson's Lagoon Hotel. When Lawson died in the 1880s, James's wife took over the hotel with the help of her twin daughters. In 1908, Felix McDermott bought it. The Victorian Education Department published and printed this reader in 1937. The infant grades learnt to read using phonics which included word groups eg. 'ee' words, 'ai' words etc.This book was used in all Victorian schools to assist children to read.Small tattered book with soft cover held by cloth on card. The 102 pages are held by two staples. It consists of stories, poetry with B & W pictures some of which have been coloured in with pencil. At the back is a 'Language List' which consists of 'word groups' eg. Singer began to market its machines internationally in 1855. They began mass-producing domestic electric machines in 1910. Treadle machines were powered mechanically by a foot pedal that is pushed back and forth by the operator's foot. There were also machines belt powered, hand powered and eventually electric powered. Treadle machines were made into the 1950s but they were most common during the late Victorian years (up to 1901). The history of the Ski Club of Victoria is also a history of skiing in Victoria. The Club was founded in 1924 when most of the skiing was done on Mt Buffalo. Members of the Ski Club of Victoria fostered and developed Victorian skiing.
