Poster - Poster Wodonga Brewery, 1889
The Wodonga Brewery was established in Hume Street (now Church Street) Although relatively short lived the brewery had many changes of ownership. D. Hallahan commenced brewing in 1888. On the Fri 4 Jan 1889 Wodonga and Towong Sentinel announced that the Wodonga Brewery had been taken over by D. Clark of Melbourne. By Fri 27 Sep 1889 the proprietor was advertised as W. D. Busch. However, the Wodonga Brewery was sold at auction on Busch’s behalf on 25 Jan 1890. The entire property was knocked down to Mr Louis Wenkelmann, of Jindera, for £500. The brewery was again sold to Patrick Flanagan in 1891. In 1895 Flanagan rented the brewery to the partnership of J. R. Martin and A. Wilcox. When the partnership was dissolved in January 1896, Patrick Flanagan continued to operate the brewery. In September 1905 the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company of Melbourne announced that they had secured the old Brewery Buildings in Hume Street, Wodonga to establish a cream receiving depot. In November 1922 tenders were called for the removal of the Old Brewery buildings. This poster is of local significance as it advertises and early business in Wodonga.A coloured poster advertising Wodonga Brewery printed in black, red and white. Domestic object - Butter packet - Eskdale and Tallangatta Butter Factories, 1890s
Tallangatta Butter Factory The Tallangatta Butter Factory and Creamery Co. Ltd was established as a co-operative with application for shares closing on 19 December 1891. It was registered in February 1892 and notified in the Victorian Government Gazette. It was one of the first north eastern Victoria dairy co-operatives. The Upper Murray and Mitta Herald on Thursday 23 March 1905 recorded that advice had been received of the sale in London of a shipment of 191 boxes of sent via India. The sale fetched a price at 105 shillings per cwt (hundredweight). When the township of Tallangatta was moved due to the raising of the Hume Weir in 1956, a new factory was built at the new location. It continued to operate until 1959 when it merged with the Kiewa Butter Factory to become the North Eastern Dairy Company. In 1985 this organisation was taken over by the Murray Goulburn Co-operative Eskdale Butter Company. After the selling of shares to form a co-operative, The Eskdale Butter Factory was officially opened on Saturday 26 November 1904. It closed after a merger with Murray Goulburn in 1969.This item is representative of the dairy industry in North East Victoria.2 wrappers for butter produced in North East Victoria by the Tallangatta Butter Factory and the Eskdale Butter Factory and Creamery. B&W studio portrait of Percy and Minnie Agnes (Cissy) Johns, children of Edwin Johns of Selby. Percy is about 10 years old. He is wearing what appears to be a sailor suit comprising a dark, double-breasted jacket with a deep, pale collar which is squared off at the back, a dark waistcoat buttoned to the neck, with a pale bow and collar showing, and dark knee-length pants over dark stockings and ankle boots. The jacket is undone. Cissy looks to be about 3 or 4. She is wearing a dark, knee-length dress with a yoke, long sleeves, and a light, wide lace collar. She has dark stockings and calf-length buttoned boots. She has a bow in her hair. The children are standing in front of an ornate wicker chair with one arm resting on the arm of the chair. The name 'Melba' is written on the cardboard frame around the photo, and 'Melba [illegible but presumably '& Co.'] Melbourne' is embossed on the bottom right corner of the photo. The original photo is badly foxed. Dated c.1905. -

Can McKenzie's Coffee, mid to late 1900's
This tin which once contained coffee with chicory was purchased in a period when the importation of coffee beans into Australia was quite expensive and to counter that local distributors of coffee mixed it with Chicory, a blended coffee, flavoured slightly milder depending on the amount of coffee(percentage) per serve. This provided a cheaper cup of "coffee" drink. This mixture was a spin off from the 1930's Great Depression and the naval blockages of World War II (imports from India and other regional coffee growers) and the scarcity of secure ship supplies. As supplies became more secure "pure" coffee as a drink became available at reasonable costs. This "insignificant" coffee/chicory tin is very significant as it demonstrates that the Kiewa Valley was becoming more accessible to reliable coffee supplies and general food items. This was brought about through reliable roads and an ever increasing population The need for travelling supply caravans to the area, and with the establishment of grocery stores in Tawonga and Mount Beauty the supply of previously "hard to get" groceries vanished. This transition was precipitated by the SEC Vic Hydro Scheme of the 1940's to 1960's which increased the valley population two fold. This container of McKenzie's Coffee and Chicory is made from pressed steel and has a tight fitting lid (steel with a protruding lip to allow finger pressured removal). The tin has one pressed seem (holding the cylinder together). The backdrop of the outside of the tin is "grained" brown painted with dark brown (worn) lettering and central between McKenzie's/Coffee is a figure of an eagle with its wings outstretched. All the letters and figure have been embossed into the tin surface. The weighted contents are listed at a capacity of 1Ib Net.On one side (front) "McKenzie's Coffee and Chicory 1lb Net". Button hooks were used to fastens buttons on boots and long gloves. It is a tool used for the closing of shoes, gloves or other apparel that uses buttons as fasteners. The steel hook end is inserted through the buttonhole to capture the button by the shank and draw it through the opening. This hook is most likely to have been used to do up bootsWomen and young girls generally wore boots that were either front laced or side buttoned, particularly in the period from the 1870s . Buttonhooks were needed to do up the buttons on buttoned boots and were used by poking the metal hook through the buttonhole, grabbing the button and pulling it through the eyelet. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Instrument - Piano, Upright, c.1905
The piano (Beale-Vader patented model) was donated on Thursday 19 December 1907 by Lady Northcote (Alice, wife of the Governor General of Australia) for the Siddeley Street Institute. The article in The Age dating Friday 20 December 1907: "Shortly after noon yesterday the Rey. A. Gurney Goldsmith, chaplain to the Victorian Missions to Seamen, who has just taken up residence at his quarters in the new Seamen's' Institute on the Yarra-bank, which was recently opened by his Excellence the Governor-General, was surprised at the receipt of a case of large dimensions. On opening it he found a grand piano, accompanied by a card, "With Lady Northcote's compliments." The pianoforte is one of Beale's make, and its presentation is another illustration of the determination of the vice-regal representatives in Australia to encourage local manufactures. It will be remembered that on the occasion of the opening of the institute an appeal was made to the public for a pianoforte and a billiard table. Lady Northcote has responded with the former, and it will be most useful in connection with the concerts which are given once a week to the, sailors of vessels coming up tho river. The question now arises as to who will provide the billiard table for the use of "Jack ashore," as one of the inducements for him, to visit the institute instead of' spending his spare time in the public house. "Governor Northcote and his wife had laid the foundation Stones of the first Central Institute on Siddeley street. The piano was used it for entertainments and concerts including accompaniment of silent films in the 1920s. 21st century visiting seafarers whilst on shore at the Mission, still regularly play pieces such as popular tunes and classics. Document - Ann Wines Probate 1904, 1905
Tait collection: item 53 of 62This document gives details of the Will and Probate of Ann Wines, a widow, who died in 1904. She was previously from Woodford but was resident in Warrnambool at the time of her death. She left personal estate to the value of £772 with the chief beneficiary being her daughter, Jane. The Wines family was a well-known one in the Woodford/Mailors Flat areas with Charles and Hannah Wines arriving in the district in the early 1850s. The lawyer involved in drawing up this document was Henry Parrington who was in partnership with Jabez Higgins in the 1880s and 90s and from 1900 to 1901 in partnership with John Tait. From 1901 on Henry Parrington had a legal practice on his own account. The legal practice was in Kepler Street. Parrington died in 1926. This document was passed down to successive lawyers occupying the Kepler Street law premises and located there in 2014. This document is of some interest as it gives details of the Will and Probate of Ann Wines who was a resident of Woodford (19th century) and later Warrnambool (early 20th century). It will be useful for research. This is a white piece of paper folded in two to make four pages. Three of the pages had ruled margins in red and have handwritten material in black ink. Musical Instrument, Edison Phonograph, 1905
The phonograph is a mechanical device for the recording and reproduction of sound and originally used a tinfoil sheet wrapped around a rotating cylinder to produce the sound. It was invented by Thomas Edison of U.S.A. in 1877 and was the model for all phonographs or gramophones made and developed throughout the 20th century. This machine is of particular interest to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society as it is an Edison phonograph and an earlier model of this phonograph was used in Warrnambool late in the 19th century to make an important recording. In 1896 Thomas Rome, an employee in a Warrnambool boot and shoe shop, purchased an Edison phonograph that could both play and record sounds. At the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7 visitors to the Exhibition paid a fee to listen to music on this phonograph. But Rome also recorded some local Warrnambool people singing and speaking and these recordings survive today. They are regarded as the oldest surviving recordings made in Australia. Thomas Rome later became a shoe shop proprietor in Warrnambool and was a well-known person in the town/city for a great number of years. This is an Edison Gem Phonograph. It has a black-painted wooden base, now detached from the main mechanism. The phonograph is made of metal which is now heavily rusted. It has a cylindrical turntable for playing the Edison cylindrical records and a handle with a wooden knob. The turning mechanism and belt are now broken. The name of the manufacturer and details of the patents are on a metal plate attached to the side of the phonograph. The amplifier mechanism at the top of the machine is missing. The cover of the machine is made of wood and has a wooden handle attached with a piece of metal and two metal screws. There are also two metal screws on the side of the cover. The cover has a slot on the side to allow the turning handle to be accommodated outside of the cover. The cover is much stained and spotted. ‘Edison Gem Phonograph’ thomas edison, history of sound recordings, thomas rome (warrnambool) -

Geisha Sakae was an extremely popular postcard model shortly after the Russo-Japanese war 1904-05, people used to line up early in the morning whenever a new postcard was released at the postcard shop in Ginza. The beauty of her gait was so widely admired that her walk inspired many of the leading Onnagata (male Kabuki actors in female roles) of the day. She went on to marry Ichikawa Sadanji II, one of the most popular Kabuki actors in Japan, who worked hard to promote new plays and revive long-forgotten classical dramas. The technique was invented by the Swiss Hans Jakob Schmid during the 1880s. The fascinating aspect of these prints is that they are created from black and white photographs. It required quite some work and talent to create these images. The photographer would usually make notes about the colors in the image he shot. These enabled a painter to create a painting that served as a color guide for the litho stone maker. This artisan would then create multiple exposures of the original black-and-white negative, changing the exposure time, development settings, and using dodge and burn techniques to create the required set of 6 to 15 stones that would each be used to print one specific color. By combining all these colors you get the prints [Ref: https://www.prepressure.com/printing/history/photochrome-prints]This item, a souvenir from Japan from between the wars (circa 1923) was brought home to Research, Victoria by Bill Teagle who was serving in the Royal Australian Navy (1919-1945). Bill Teagle's sister Violet Amelda Teagle had married Theodore (Curly) Feldbauer in 1933. Bill's brother-in-law Curly was taken as a Prisoner of War by the Japanese and died at Sandakan in March 1945. The family did not learn of Curly’s death till months later and Bill's sister, Violet, herself could never forgive the Japanese for what happened to Curly. Curly is remembered on the Eltham Roll of Honour Board and his son, Albert Feldbauer (Bill’s nephew and youngest child of the children of the soldier fathers attending a school in the district), was given the honour of turning the first sod for the Eltham War Memorial Infant Welfare Centre Building. Despite this, the family maintained this cherished souvenir from a time of previous foreign friendship with Japan. The item was possibly given by Bill Teagle to his sister Margaret Rose (formerly Ingram) who later married Richard Edward (Eddie) Fielding in early 1948. (Eddie had been engaged to someone else before he went to war, but his fiancée broke it off before his return to Australia.) It was cared for by the Teagle/Fielding family for approximately one hundred years. It is of particular significance given the family's connection to the Eltham War Memorial and the significance of that memorial to the local community and represents that despite the horrors of war, former friends then foes can become friends again.tom fielding collection, geisha sakae, japanese postcard, postcard -
