Edith Cavell was born in England in 1865 and trained as a nurse in the late 1890s. She was also an accomplished linguist, musician and artist. In 1907 she was assisted in establishing a modern nursing system at the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels. At the outbreak of World War One she was left in charge of the hospital and what is now known as the Red Cross. During that time she assisted more than 200 Belgian, British and French soldiers who had been separated from their armies, or who had escaped German detention. In 1915, she was accused of conspiring to help prisoners escape, and was tried by a military court in Brussels. She was convicted and sentenced to death, along with four others. Cavell was executed by firing squad on 12 October 1915; she was still wearing her nurse’s uniform. Photo: Note on back of photo states Öutside the Magazine '- coloured photo of three men standing in front of corrugated iron shed. Description attached reads' all the explosives for the mines in this area were stored here. A formed track runs to the door with earthworks all around to guard against blast. A trolley ran from each building on a wooden track. Wheels were copper. Two buildings formed the magazine, one in front of the other. This was to store caps and other explosives. Inside the magazine are numerous racks. Externally buildings were provided with copper lighting arrestors, later removed by vandals. Still to be seen are tracks in asphalt where woollen ( wooden ? ) rails ran. A good metal road ran right to magazine ( gravel) In front of the magazine building is botanical gardens area ( between it and Simpsons Road ). A cricket pitch also in the area more to the rear of Fitzpatrick's Hotel. Eaglehawk's first golf course is said to be in this area. Magazine keepers house still stands next to McLelland ( water bailiff )eaglehawk, powder magazine, eaglehawk, powder magazine, magazine, simpsons road, botanical gardens.

This image perfectly captures the Botanical Gardens in late afternoon light. The Statuary Pavilion was built following a bequest from James Russell Thompson, who was originally from Scotland. The Wallace Statue was purchased with money remaining in the bequest after the Pavilion was established. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. James Russell Thompson (1818-1886) a successful mining investor and stockbroker of the Ballarat Stock Exchange, gifted the pavilion and the statues within, as a 10,000 pound bequest to the City in his will. The pavilion, designed by architect T.E. Molloy on an octagonal plan with a convex curved roof, was constructed in 1887, and houses the statues Flight from Pompeii, Rebekah, Susannah, Modesty and Ruth. The pavilion is a major feature of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, and unique in Victoria. It is a favourite subject for photographers, and Mrs Strange has captured it surrounded by massed small begonias. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. The FBBG History Group found in their research at the Public Records Office of Victoria that the Trustees of Thomson's Estate arranged for the City of Ballarat to undertake the care of Thomson's grave following the transfer of 10 pounds. However, the grave needs restoration and it was found that the Council still bears responsibility for its upkeep.James Russell Thomson had been a generous benefactor to the City but as a bachelor, he had no descendants to care for his grave, which had fallen into disrepair.
