A chronicle of Life Members of the G.A.C.C. during the mid 20th century. Honour Board in memory of Ross "Snow" Murfett, who died in 1983, aged 33 and who's family and friends holidayed in Peterborough. His mates played an informal competition, in Timboon the first year, but thereafter at Peterborough. The tournament grew in popularity among his mates until the Golf Club incorporated it into their program and it became an annual event open to all.It is still popular with Snow's friends. The story behind that is that a cup appeared at the Golf Club (its unknown where it came from) which was inscribed with 1927 J. McCully Peterborough Golf club Open Champion. It was probably not referring to this Peterborough but this club did not hold an Open Championship at that time, so it was decided that they would. The first Open championship was held in 1980 but the record from 1927 was included as it was impetus behind the decision to hold the Open Championship, which continues to this day. Between the 1920’s and 1950’s the YWCA, Blue Triangle and local committee of representatives organised an Inter House Athletics Day for Girls in Geelong and Melbourne. Local Geelong business, such as the surrounding woollen mills, business firms and church clubs would form teams of seven women to compete in a variety of sports such as bowls, basketball, hockey, cricket and soccer. The Smeaton Presbyterian Church was built in 1859 of locally made brick, and opened in 1860. The building committee was . Messrs. John Hepburn, W. McAlpine, W. Anderson, S. Moore, W. H. Clarke and W. Miller. It cost an estimated 1,200 pounds, and was assisted by Captain John Hepburn who donated 5 acres of land and 150 pounds for the church. The rest was contributed by the settlers and their employees. Around 1890, the outside brickwork was given a coat of cement, which has improved with age. The MUIOOF Lodge was located in Union Street, Kew. The Lodge was established in 1863. The Adult Deaf and Dumb Mission of Victoria, now known as Vicdeaf, (the Victorian Deaf Society), was founded in 1884 as the Victorian Society for Promoting the Spiritual and Temporal Welfare of the Adult Deaf and Dumb. The provisional committee being Mr W Bates, Mr J M Bruce, Mr J D Gowan, Mr Edwin Newbiggin, Mr C M Officer, M. L, A., and the Rev. W. Moss. The Adult Deaf and Dumb Mission's objects were: 1. To provide the means for religious worship and instruction for the adult deaf and dumb of Victoria 2. To visit the deaf and dumb in their homes, especially when sick or in distress 3. To assist the deaf and dumb of good character in obtaining suitable employment 4. To provide technical and other education for the adult and dumb 5.
