Leopoldine Mimovich was born in 1920, in Neumarkt in the Italian Tyrol. In 1940, aged 20, she moved to Vienna where she studied clay modelling and drawing. From 1943 she attended the School of Wood Sculpture in Hallstatt, graduating in 1947. Following her marriage to Ljubisa Mimovich, the couple migrated to Australia in 1949 travelling on MV Skaugum. After an initial period at Bonegilla and Royal Park Migrant Hostels the couple moved to Yarraville and then to 33 Miller Road, Kew, where she established her studio. Dr David Pitt was Australian paediatrician. In 1959, he joined the Kew Cottages workforce, where he practised for 17 years and improved the conditions for the children. He was a pioneer in the identification of rare syndromes using computers. The Cottages anabled him to contribute to the day to day care of disadvantaged people in the Australian community, while continuing his research. Pitt left Kew in 1976. (Source: Wikipedia). The Padbury family were early pioneers of Kew, running for over a century a funeral parlour in Cotham Road. The photograph of Mr Whitman can be reliably dated to 1914 or later due to an article on the establishment of Godfrey Roberts' atelier at the rear of Mr Chenoweth's in Glenferrie Road (Source: 'Godfrey E Roberts Photographic Studio', Hawthorn Kew Camberwell Citizen, 5 June 1914, p. 2)This, and other photographs of members of the Whitman-Padbury families was donated by Mrs Clarrie Thomson, a descendant of the families, and a member of the Society. From its beginnings in 1958, the Society has mounted exhibitions and/or displays, in early days in shop window and in community spaces located in the Kew City Hall (later Kew Library), and since 2010 at the Kew Court House. Exhibitions typically coincided with the annual Kew Community Festival in March, but after 2013 evolved into three new exhibitions yearly at the Kew Court House. Smaller displays continue to be mounted in the Kew Library. W.D. Vaughan in 'Kew's Civic Century' (1960) has a chapter (XXII, pp.103-105) on the Kew Swimming Pool (aka Kew Baths). In the chapter he recounts debate in Council from 1912 about the need for a swimming pool. The first concrete step toward achieving this occurred in 1914 when Council purchased the Tramways Sheds on the corner of High and Disraeli Streets in 1914. Further adjoining land in High Street was compulsorily acquired in 1923. The final plans were accepted in 1925 and following public tender, Messrs. Weavill and Keast were appointed to construct the pool at a cost of 5,418/9/-. The baths were formally opened on 18 November 1925 by George Ramsay, Mayor of Kew. (The Kew Swimming Club was founded in the same year.) Vaughan notes that "mixed bathing was not permitted at the Kew Baths until January, 1928, when it was allowed every evening (except Sundays) and Friday afternoons. Michel lipsticks were created by an American company led by Georgette Michel which regularly advertised their products in women's magazines in the 1940s and 1950s. The lipsticks were manufactured [under licence?] by DHA Laboratories (Drug Houses Australia) Pty Ltd which had been established In 1930, as a holding company combining Bickford's with a number of similar Australian companies representing all states except Tasmania. Most items produced by DHA Laboratories were pharmaceuticals. It is not known whether the holding company manufactured other cosmetics apart from the Michel line.Intact, and unused packet of Australian produced lipsticks produced in the 1940s or 1950sPack of Michel lipsticks, containing 10 of the 12 original lipsticks. This photograph is part of a series taken at the Willsmere (Kew) Mental Hospital. The photographs were gifted to the Kew Historical Society in 2018 by Rosemary Barnes. The photos had been in the possession of her former husband, Dr Fred Stamp, the last medical superintendent of the hospital. In 2019, the photographs were transferred to the State Archives as Permanent Government Records, as the Society is only entitled as a Class-B Place of Deposit to hold Temporary Government Records. The Society was permitted to keep and publish a digital copy of each photograph. Many of the photographs include information on the reverse about individuals or locations. Where this is the case, these have been published here as images that can be viewed in the picture carousel.
