The origin of debutante balls was that the woman was old enough to be married, and part of the purpose of her coming out was to display her to eligible bachelors and their families with a view to marriage within a select circle. This photograph shows the Orbost Shire Council in 1907. In the back row are : A. Hillyard; John Draffin (sec.); David Jonson; Archie Rodwell; Hugh Cameron; Geotge Nixon; J. Pearse; John Johnston; Henry Luke (pres.); Donald Munro; Bill Cumming; Charles Grove The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council.This item is associated with the Orbost Shire Council. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. This is a collection of five photographs taken at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, circa 1950s to 1960s. Appearing in photo .3P is MAJ Edward Anderson MBE, who served from 1942 to 1977 and reached the rank of LTCOL. LT Frank Thorogood SB St J. served from 1960 to 1981. He reached the rank of LTCOL and was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1980 to 1981. CAPT W. Greer’s service history is unknown. Appearing in photo .5P is MAJ Nolan, who served from 1939 to 1975. He was promoted to LTCOL and was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1965 to 1969. He was subsequently promoted to COL and was the Director of Military Survey from 1972 to 1975.This is a collection of five photographs taken at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, circa 1950s to 1960s. This is believed to be a photograph of Cartographic Squadron, one of the Army Survey Regiment’s squadrons at Fortuna, Bendigo. It was probably taken on Corps Day in July 1985 as its members appear in winter dress. Cartographic technician tasks undertaken by Cartographic Squadron at that time were scribing, compiling, retouching, masking, type setting, type stickup, terrain embossing, correcting and proving quality control. Bottle, 1960s
This bottle has been issued to a customer of Shilton's Pharmacy 11 9 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. The bottle contained tablets to be taken for a cold. Harry Shilton bought the business in 1937 and added a chiropody clinic and a hairdressing salon and he was known as the " Man in White.' . In 1953 Harry Shilton took on a partner Alan Anderson . Harry Shilton retired in 1960 and Alan Anderson continued as the proprietor, transferring the partnership to John Lindsay in 1967. The name Shilton was still used until 1972. This bottle is of minor importance as an example of tablets in a bottle as used by customers in the 1960s.A brown glass bottle with a plastic lid. It has a label with red and black printing. Book, The Comprehensive Teachers' Bible, 1890s
This Bible was owned by John Glasgow, a Wangoom farmer. His father, Robert, settled in Blackwood Hill near Wangoom in the 1850s. John Glasgow was a celebrated cheesemaker who won many prizes locally and overseas and a Warrnambool Shire Councillor from 1880 to 1886 and from 1892 to 1906. He was a Sunday School teacher at the Wangoom Presbyterian Church for 50 years and an Elder for 42 years. The book contains the names and birth dates of the extended Glasgow family and the names include Linnett, Glasgow, Coulstock and Anderson.This Bible is of considerable interest because of its connection to the John Glasgow and other members of his family. This is a leather-covered book with gold lettering on the spine. The cover overlaps the pages for extra protection. The pages are gilt-edged. One page has come apart from the binding and several other pages are partly detached from the spine. All the inscriptions are hand-written in black ink. One is a religious verse which has been pasted on to the inside of the front cover and on another page are listed the names and birth dates of 18 members of the Glasgow extended family. Label, H.W.Shilton, Mid 20th century
This label comes from the Warrnambool pharmacy of H.W.Shilton. It appears to be a cardboard stopper inserted into the top of a bottle. Harry Shilton’s business was at 119 Liebig Street. He commenced in 1938 when he purchased the business from Ralph Barnes. In 1953 Alan Anderson went into partnership with Harry Shilton. The latter retired in 1960 and in 1967 John Lindsay became the proprietor of the pharmacy business. This label is of minor interest as a memento of a 20th century Warrnambool chemist and as an example of a cardboard bottle top insert.
