The current site of the Kew Recreation Centre in High Street Kew previously housed the Kew Depot on the corner of Disraeli Street. In nearby Derby Street, a number of original Victorian era buildings were gradually replaced due to development of the Baths precinct and commercial development.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. Small single fronted cottage in Derby Street, Kew. Photograph of W7 1024 decorated and illuminated for the Centenary of Kew. See March 1961 Electric Traction - "W7 1024 was decorated and illuminated for the centenary of the City of Kew, and was scheduled to run between December 4 and December 16, 1960, from Kew Depot on the Mont Albert and North Balwyn lines. Its term was extended to mid-January and it was still running in early February. It was similarly decorated for the centenary of the City of Fitzroy in 1958 (see illustration E.T. 10/60). Rose Series postcard No. P 1040, titled "Flinders Street Railway Station, Melbourne" showing the entrance to the station, many motor cars, some with black-out headlight covers, a MMTB Leyland bus, and a W2 class tram either 288 or 388 (Kew Depot cars at the time.) with the destination of Spencer St. This would have to be one of the first W2 class cars to have the metal gutter replaced by a storm/drip rail. There is an advertising board on the railway station verandah, advertising Liberty Loans. Photograph - of a K class four-wheel or single truck tram on a PMTT route 14 (STRATHALBYN ST (Kew) - VICTORIA BRIDGE) tram service, at Harp Road and High St. The reference gives the tram based at Kew Depot in 1928. The tram was originally a Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust tram, though, by the time of this photograph, it has been re-lettered for the MMTB, which took over the PMTT in 1920. The photograph has been marked up for a submission possibly to either Council or the MMTB for a waiting room or shelter at this location. The wall of the Harp of Erin Hotel and a Victoria Bitter sign can be seen on the right-hand side. The original photo appears to have been torn. The Kew City Council Depot was for a period situated on the corner of High Street and Disraeli Streets. The photo from the former City of Kew Municipal Collection was taken by a photographer from Stuart Tompkins Studio in Camberwell. One of four original black and white photographs of a horse and cart and a council employee, Barry Avery, in Parkhill Road, Kew. In a number of photos the cart has K.C.C., in large letters on its side. It is presumed to be the city garbage cart No.3 which was stationed at the old Council Depot on the corner of High and Disraeli Streets. Pamphlet - printed onto an A4 sheet, titled "Sacked" about a MMTB Conductor, No. 3345, John Harrington, asking people who received this pamphlet to write to the Board to have him reinstated. Gives the details of his viewpoints and the action of the Disciplinary Panel. Dated 1-8-1979. The Union Industrial Officer Gordon Bell recommended that he resign. See note in the pdf file from donor - "Item 3 John Harrington - he printed 2000 of these pamphlets and distributed them on Kew Depot trams and Preston Depot trams. He split the union down the middle and resulted in Gordon Bell resigning and Jim Harper becoming Industrial Officer.
